In class, I learned so much more about the world of broadcast journalism. I learned about journalism ethics, composure on camera, who works behind the scenes, what kind of news there are and more. Within this course, I found that what goes into producing a broadcast, especially a television broadcast, involves different abilities.
In the future, I think these journalism concepts could help me in this competitive field. I’ll know to keep organized and take authority, as well as have the mindset to be a journalist that stands out from the others. I know I’ll be able to make it as a journalist because I have skills like organization, clarity and professionalism to help me land a job in the field.
I found our midterm assignment to be most meaningful because I had to immerse into the world of journalism. I needed to follow the ethics, know terminology and locate newsworthy content within my beat. The most challenging assignment was assignment 2 because it was difficult to pinpoint more information on how it could apply in my future career as a journalist.
If I could go back in time and give myself advice, I’d say being a journalism doesn’t only depend on strong writing skills. The field is very competitive and I need a variety of skills. I’m going to need to work my way up. On the other hand, during this course I discovered that I would like to work behind the scenes, like writing scripts for news anchors to edit or even do makeup and dressing.

Local 10’s newscast appeals to me because of how quick they get through major news, but still make it easy to understand. Their anchors are concise, as well as informational despite having only a few minutes to tell a story. They know how to organize the most significant news to other news and even involve some positive news. As for their segments, my favorite is “Dirty Dining” which talks about restaurants not meeting health code standards.
During this pandemic, they have been displaying number of confirmed cases in the scrolling news ticker and update on these numbers at the top of the half hour. This appeals to audiences because they are able to keep informed with what is happening in the community. Its easier to keep up with their YouTube because sometimes I don’t want to watch an entire 30 minute segment. Also, Local 10 new’s Youtube is constantly updated with what plays on TV.

It has been almost a month since transitioning to online classes. It’s definitely not easy, there is twice as much effort put into motivating myself to do my assignments. What most worries me are my final exams because I feel as if I’m not learning as efficiently as I did when physically going to class. Also, it is frustrating to do my work solely on a computer!
Due to this pandemic, the world of journalism and how the news is reported will change drastically. For one, people and journalists will make sure to utilize credible sources. It won’t be a competition to see who reports breaking news first, but instead there will be patience in order to gather correct information. Second, more of the general public will look to journalists for answers. People may keep up with the news more, especially since many of us have been watching for constant updates. It will become a habit. On the other hand, when it comes to live reporting, journalists will take better precaution in terms of sanitation. When interviewing, they will opt for video calls more often.

While I wasn’t present last class, I found some information on journalist Clay Gutzmore on LinkedIn. I find it interesting that he not only publishes entertainment stories, but covers other topics as well. I found one of his business articles called “Entrepreneurs can find an ‘Oasis’ in Miami Gardens”, which talks about finding new business opportunities in Miami Gardens and how they can benefit the local community.
Gutzsmore has also written about Medical Facilities and Services, talking about the Optimal Living Center, a medical center in a shopping plaza. Miami Gardens residents are able to walk in and understand why they may have a recurring ache or pain. The location is convenient, especially since before that many residents had to leave the area to find medical care. He includes what inspired Doctors Kirsten and Abraham Hollist to found this medical center and even a picture of the grand opening.
Looking through his website, I thought it was fascinating to learn that he had earned two Florida College Press Association awards. He is an inspiration, and I love that he has such a passion for writing stories on a variety of topics. What’s special about him is that he is coherent with any topic, even it’s covering something he isn’t too familiar with. Furthermore, when I came across his resume, I realized that I wanted to have a resume full of accomplishments like he does. It told the story of what made him the successful journalist he is now.

Blog 3 Part 2
(A Controversial Apology) The newspaper’s response to the incident was appropriate. They took responsibility for their actions and apologized for the photographs. The student journalists should censor the other students in the photographs on the website, because the journalists were simply doing their jobs.
(Controversy over a Concert) Newspaper staffers or any other media employees should be able to attend events with a political purpose if they’re not there for their job. I think if some employees go, they should not donate money for the fundraiser. The rules are may be different jobs at the news outlet, like if there are employees that work behind the scenes and aren’t the face of the outlet.

Blog 3 Part 1
The first ethic discussed in class was “Seek Truth and Report It”, which requires for journalists to be honest. When gathering information, they should make sure that they’re facts, and take responsibility for their findings. A primary example is reporting a story, its not a matter of being first, but rather making sure that the information is clear and accurate. No settling for what details are discovered first.
Minimizing harm was an ethic that demonstrated the treatment of people journalists interact with. Individuals should be treated with respect, as well as compassion, especially when it comes to those who are vulnerable. Two examples include caution when naming those who are underage, and people impacted by a tragedy.
To act independently, a journalist should avoid conflict of interest, refuse bribes and know the difference between news and advertisements. Their main priority is serving the public. An example of this ethic: https://nypost.com/2013/07/20/kris-jenner-tries-to-bribe-post-reporter-with-magnolia-cupcakes-and-a-tiffany-pen/ Linda Stasi refused Kris Jenner’s offer and instead wrote an article about the incident.
Finally, to be accountable and transparent is to take responsibility. A journalist should admit to their mistakes when necessary, whether it be towards their viewers, listeners or even other journalists. For example, a journalist who releases false information by mistake or plagiarizes should own up to their actions and take responsibility.

I think as of now, I’ve yet to find a specific beat I would be completely interested in having.I know I’d focus on soft news because its not information that people urgently need. Generally, I’d be focused in entertainment reporting. However, I want to be more specific, so I’ll stick to music reporting.
Within the next 5 years, I would see myself working at a radio station in the city. I would most likely dive into entertainment reporting because I would like to interview musicians. Although its most common, I wouldn’t mind coming up with my own unique segment for talking about entertainment. I’d talk a lot about music reviews and speak with musicians about what inspires them to do what they do. Its important to me because music and self expression is something i’m truly passionate about.
In relation to my beat, I’ve chosen Kat Corbett, a radio personality and actress who works on SiriusXM Lithium and KROQ Los Angeles. She’s been known to interview a large sum of musicians, like Metallica and Foo Fighters. In the past, she’s written some observation pieces for the music service Napster. Her diverse form of reporting and expression is astounding to me because I’d like to work in several forms of media, not just with interviewing and as a voice on the radio.

Over the last hundred years, broadcast journalism has really experienced a development. It can share different information influencing the people’s opinions and views. First, it was simply newspapers. Then radio, Americans would listen to important news of the day and even presidential announcements when needed. By the 1950s, those with TVs would keep informed through nightly news networks. Today, we see the influence of all three sources.
Going through the process of gathering, obtaining and interpreting information, broadcast media tells a story. The world can then view, listen or read and comprehend the story in their way. There are different ways to spread a story, whether it be through radio, newspapers or television. Broadcasting focuses on mainly television and radio, which helps in assessing the emotional aspect.
Broadcast journalism plays a major role in my everyday life, especially now with the power of social media. Most of the time, I can keep updated, whether it be through the radio on the way home from class or on tv at night. It keeps me connected to the rest of the world, making me aware of what is going on not only locally, but nationally and globally as well.
I’d like to learn more about newspaper and radio media, as I’m not as frequently exposed to its process. I think radio is fascinating, as you mainly depend on and project your voice in order to share your story. There is more a sense of intimacy between the listener and speaker and I find that its important to establish some sort of connection that way. Print would be critical to learn more about, as one would think its a dying form of communication, but in reality its more important than ever.
Between radio, TV, print and communication, there is a relationship that involves storytelling. lumenlearning.com claims that “the growth of communications technology allows people today to find more information more easily than any previous generation. Mass media can be print, radio, television, or Internet news.” Now more than ever, we clearly see the close relationship between tv, print, radio and communication. They are our three main types of mass media that play such a vital role in our everyday lives.
