Logan was on duty which really wasn’t all that unusual, he was usually on duty, not that he minded that. He enjoyed what he did, of course some days were more difficult than others but it was like that for everyone no matter what they did. This particular day, he had to check in with Brooklyn. He had to check in with her often and it had to be him because he was the only one she couldn’t control. That fact, he knew, bothered her.

Logan made it to their usual meeting spot and followed her, sitting down across from her, he looked up at her, “ Well, hello to you too, Brooklyn.” he replied to her, keeping his tone light yet professional. He has never been fazed by her attitude towards him, there was nothing she could do to him anyway,  “ I see you’re anxious to get things rolling.” he said, “ You got plans after this, I assume?” he asked curiously, it was his job to know and he took his job seriously. Brooklyn was capable of anything, it was his duty to take special interest in her, the Government wanted to keep an eye on her and he was the only one who could do that and remain protected. 

“When do I not have plans?”  Brooklyn said with a grin,”  Really, I would think you’d have caught on to that by now?”   They both would recognize the joke, as it was no secret how much she disliked the idea of having someone keeping tabs on her.  While she could have used her power to change this with just about any other guard in Grimstone, they were smart in choosing Logan.  The guy simply had to remind them she couldn’t use her power on him and he was indeed her guard, and they’d simply reassign him.  It was annoying.

“Are you hoping to get in on this rom com date at the movie theatre and gossip brunch just after?  I’m sure you’d love to hear all my opinions on other residents here,”  she said hoping the idea of joining would feel more like torture to him and he’d decline.

“How nice it must be to have everyone at your beck and call, or was it just luck that this one knows how you like your coffee?” Maybe Brian had missed that trend back in his school days…with the pretty people getting everything they wanted, or maybe he was too involved in the important things to care.

“It’s my business because that’s what I’m being paid for. Not on a personal level but a scientific one at least.”

“Of course it’s nice to have people at your beck and call. Who wouldn’t want that?” she said, as if it was obvious,” But really, people do what they want, I can’t help it if they just want to be nice and help me out.”

The conversation was getting annoying already, because while it was obvious he had at least a slight idea of her own power and how it worked, he seemed far more interested in trying to make her feel bad about it.  Brooklyn had no intentions of feeling bad about her power, she hadn’t done anything wrong with it.  

“You’re pretty bad at your job then, it seems,”  she said with a slight smile,” Aren’t scientists supposed to be unbiased and impartial?”

Antonia frowned. Yes, of course Miss Dane lived in Grimstone Park. Where had that come from? “My apologies, Miss Dane. It must be a force of habit. I don’t do much outreach across town lines; I’m new.” She listened to Miss Dane’s suggestions, pleased that it was all things that Grimstone Point was already doing. As far as the experiment was going, her side certainly seemed to be the better one. “I see,” she said, doing her best to mask her reaction. “And–well, are there things you particularly like about Grimstone Park?”

Brooklyn listing things she liked about Grimstone Park was far harder than the things she didn’t like.  It wasn’t so much that the place was bad, as much as Brooklyn would much rather live her life out in the real world more than in some town under surveillance.   She didn’t see herself as any sort of threat, and refused to acknowledge the ways her powers could really make her one.  She just didn’t like rules, and felt they shouldn’t apply to her, so why would she live in a place that was basically there to hold her in place?  No, this place could be exactly like the outside world (and in many ways it was) but she’d still hate it, on principle. “I don’t know,” she said, hard to hid the dismissal from her voice,”  The food is good I guess.”   She didn’t want to admit to anything good, figuring if they felt it still wasn’t up to par, it was just all the more they could run around trying to make it better.

“It’s exactly that attitude that gets under my skin,” he groaned, rolling his eyes as he did. Those who said they didn’t care often did, especially someone who was used to getting her own way, which he fully assumed Brooklyn did. He made no effort to get to know the residents personal lives so everything he thought in that regard may boil down to stereotypes and personal opinions. “Is there really anything you do care about other that yourself and your latte?”

“I mean, this is a really good latte,” Brooklyn mused,” The guy behind the counter made sure to make it just how I like it, and didn’t even charge me for the extra espresso.  Really sweet of him, honestly.”

Her focus went from the cup to the man, “ Is there any reason what I care about, is any of your business?”

People find out you have mind control powers and they either dump you in a super power facility or they assign you a personal handler.  Brooklyn had had both in her life, and unfortunately, was still stuck dealing with her babysitter, like she was some child who couldn’t be trusted to take care of herself. 

It wasn’t so much that Logan was a bad guy, as much as it was his JOB to make sure she didn’t get the true free reign of her life Brooklyn felt she deserved.  Did they honestly find her such a threat?   It was frustrating, to say the least, but also came with an odd sense of pride that they cared enough to give her that sort of attention and special treatment.

She waited at their normal check-in spot, ready to just get today’s meeting over with so she could go and meet up with a friend.  When the guard arrived, she wasted no time going to take a seat,”  Alright Kingston, let’s get this over with so I can get on with my day.”

“Out of all the residents in both Park and Point, I think I like you the least.” He shook his head and forced a sigh. “No, I’m not supposed to say that, but yes, I have said it anyway.”

“Thanks for the update, but unless you have a reason, pardon me for not caring,” was the immediate reaction Brooklyn had to the comment.  People liked Brooklyn,  whether they really wanted to or not.  That meant there were two options here:  He was lying, or he just wouldn’t realize til she used her power on him that he was lying.  Either way, she didn’t have to worry too much on the reasons, beyond her own curiosity.

He knew had gone off on something of a tangent, and in honesty, he was surprised she had stuck around to listen. “I think I’m going to scratch late night binge watching of nature shows off my to-do list for the rest of…forever really. “Unless there’s someone here that can manifest your nightmares into being, I think you’ll be fine.  Sharks in Grimstone?  That’ll be the day,”  she grinned,”  Perhaps you should update that list to something a little more soothing... Stephen King movies?  Really can’t go wrong with those, right?”

In addition to not expecting the role of interviewer, Antonia had to admit that she didn’t expect Miss Dane to respond. The woman was not particularly known for being compliant. Still, she was a resident–one in Antonia’s own town–so it stood to reason that Antonia should at least be interested in what she had to say. “Excellent,” she answered, pulling out the clipboard with the questions that had been given to her. “How would you describe your living arrangement in Grimstone Point?” she began.

“Grimstone Point?”  Brooklyn asked, feigning surprise,”  I live in Grimstone Park, Director.”   She smiled sweetly at the mistake, but then answered the question anyway,”  My living arrangement isn’t the worst I’ve been in... certainly could be better.  If you’re looking for suggestions:  faster internet and the ability to choose who I live with, would be an excellent start.”

» HISTORY

When you look at Brooklyn you see the popular girl who has everything she could possibly want. What they don’t know is that she has to use her power in order to get it all. Brooklyn found out at the young age of six that she could make people do whatever she wanted and she wasted no time in taking advantage of that ability with no regard to anyone else. Because of her power Brooklyn has never had to work hard for anything, everything just has just always come easy to her.

Brooklyn grew up in an upper-class home where her parents treated her like a princess, sometimes even going to such extremes as to forget that they had another child. Of course, that wasn’t something that they did intentionally it was all part of Brooklyn’s mind control over them. She never thought that what she was doing was wrong, she saw her power as a gift, and she didn’t really think that lot of the things she did–like make her friends change certain things about them or having random strangers give her or do things for her–was anything but normal. After all, it was something that she was so used to doing from such a young age.

Brooklyn is manipulative, of course, that comes with her power. She’s selfish and doesn’t care if she hurts anyone as long as she gets what she wants. Many people view her as shallow and materialistic which isn’t far from the truth but there’s also a side of her that not many people see. She can be caring but it’s not a side she shows often, especially after she was dragged to the Lake Grimstone Project when she turned sixteen. Originally, they had had her assigned to Grimstone Point, but when she saw the restrictions the town would put on her, she manipulated the person who moved her into thinking there had been an error, and got herself moved back. She’s not above playing dirty if it means she gets her way.

» CONNECTIONS

TARA IM - Out of all the guards, Tara is the person that Brooklyn likes to use her power on the most. The guard’s love for the town and the government’s project disgusts Brooklyn. 

JOANNA HUGHES - Joanna is friends with Brooklyn, but only because Brooklyn used her power on her.

WREN RODGERS - Wren is Brooklyn’s friend, and she genuinely likes being around him–she doesn’t even think of using her power on him.

Brooklyn Dane is a CLOSED character and is portrayed by Holland Roden.

“Hi, I’m–well, you know who I am. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about your life here?” This wasn’t what Antonia had had in mind when she’d told the director that she missed the fieldwork of her life back before The Lake Grimstone Project. What she had missed was the action. This–doing a survey–was hardly actionful. But it was important. And she was a master at paperwork, so how hard could this be? “It should only take a few minutes.”

Brooklyn hadn’t really expected a survey when it came to Grimstone.  It wasn’t like they all had much decision being here, so it felt like you simply made do with what you got.  Of course, Brooklyn herself made sure she got  to make due with the better of the two sections of Grimstone, and part of her wondered if this was perhaps some follow up on the ‘mix up’.   It was an easy enough fix if so.

“I can spare a few minutes, sure,”  she said to the Director with an innocent smile,” What would you like to know?”

“No, that’s my point exactly. If a shark was there, yeah you’d be shit scared but at least you can react. You punch it in the eye, you boop it on the nose or you swin like hell. But I’m talking about the build up. You’re in the water and you know it’s there, but you aren’t sure. Is there or isn’t there? What was that brushing against your leg? Is it going to come at you from straight on or from below?” Landon paused for breath. “Am I making any sense at all?”

She slighty raised an eyebrow and paused as he, however briefly, worked himself up over the possibility of this shark scenario. Letting a silence fall after his last question for a half moment, if only to draw attention to his run on of questions, she finally deadpanned," Maybe avoid any body of water that might have sharks in it? And maybe next time change the channel if it's Shark Week."

“Ignoring the fact that’s the most random question I’ve heard in awhile....”  she glanced at him,”  Wouldn’t it be the other way around?  A shark wouldn’t seem so scary, until you had one right there next to you in the water, where it would become incredibly terrifying?”

“Is it just me that’s scared of sharks, but at the same time not scared of sharks? Like…the idea of a shark is scary but when you actually see one it’s not. I don’t know, I’ve been watching a lot of National Geographic documentaries…”

Perhaps it had been a matter of time. Maybe India had only needed one last, final straw. Whatever it was, when she overheard the girl next to her in the training center, she paused her work, and in a voice that sounded far too firm to be her own, asked her. “Would you like me to use my power on you?” India asked. “After all: I could make you forget I was ever here. Or I could take your power away altogether. So long as you don’t know, that’d be fine, right?”

Brooklyn wasn’t actually sure how to respond at first, as the threat of her power being taken from her had never really cropped up before.  You would think if that was an option the government would have just ripped their powers from them on discovery.  It was almost too simple.   What was more worrying in this moment, however, was if she could actually take her power.... Brooklyn didn’t know a life without her mind control.  She had developed the power far sooner than most did.  It was almost chilling to think what her life would be without it.  

Rather than show any actual thought on the threat, however, in the typical Brooklyn fashion, she just retorted back,” Well, if you can take it from me, then do it.  I won’t remember and then I can just leave this place and not have to worry about it ever again.  Would you like some help?  I can allow my last act as someone who can mind control others, be the one that sets me free from it.”

“Well, being out of the hospital certainly is a good sign,” she didn’t even know why she was there, although checking up on Kristen’s brother seemed a good idea... as a friend.  She was still processing his being a guard, and frankly, after recent events she found herself all the less comfortable around anyone connected to the government.

“Hey… it was nice of you to stop by.” Kaden said after he opened his house door. “I’m fine. Or um… yeah, doing better. Happy to be out of the hospital.”
