I’ve had the anti-war theming inside Yu-Gi-Oh! on my brain lately, so I thought I’d make some direct notes on it.
To repeat what I’ve said before: Japan and the United States have different experiences with and attitudes towards war, and a good part of that can be credited to the events that occurred between these same two nations on Aug 6th and Aug 9th of 1945.
Nihilism and humans turning on each other, apocalyptic imagery, and mankind rebuilding are staples repeatedly seen in Japanese media, and these are all present elements of YGO’s final arc as well. I do think the attempted anti-war message was badly botched, but the element of anti-war was previously hinted at in Seto Kaiba’s character, particularly at the Battle City finals. The anime staff took those hints and ran with the Noa arc and Amelda’s storyline, though generally, as in a lot of Japanese series, the blame for war is notably absent as a general “war is bad” message is pushed.
YGO lifts striking iconography from the Devilman manga in the form of Alcatraz. Devilman is an iconic anti-war manga from the 70s, and that the harsh tower of Alcatraz is homaging this series and stands as the centerpiece of the Battle City finals make the anti-war intent of YGO clear.
The apocalyptic imagery of Millennium World finds its roots in the aftermath of WWII for Japan. It would be a mistake to claim Zorc is a direct representation of the atomic bomb, but this motif appears across multiple Japanese stories and it’s all rooted in that history. It is meant to evoke the ugliness of war, and what was rebuilt from.
To touch upon the anime’s own content, when Noa tells his father he’s found a way to exterminate the human race in a matter of days, it’s a cry against nuclear weapons. I recall when I was in school, how I was told the United States and Russia hold enough atomic weaponry to coat the planet seven times over in disaster. The Noa arc is making its stance clear that this sort of weapon and power should not exist.
As the final exclamation point to complete the series, Seto’s crisp and impassioned anti-war speech in The Darkside of Dimensions sees the story solidify its botched message.
Just heard the news about Kazuki Takahashi.
I’m… pretty shaken up about this right now, but
I just want to say that without him, without Yu-Gi-Oh!, I don’t think I’d be where I am today.
I messed around with the cards when I was little, never really playing by the actual rules until much later. I watched the anime after school, right after Pokémon. I played the video games, as confusing as they were for a kid. I got older… and I met a silly boy in high school who played the TCG at the lunch table. Then I got real into it, falling in love with all these characters Takahashi created, the universe in the manga & anime just pulled me right in. I drew, SO MUCH. Now, me and that silly YGO lunch table boy are more or less married, and we’ve gone to multiple YGO tournaments, made so many friends, memories, and experiences revolving around this franchise. So many things in our apartment have been metaphorically ‘touched’ by Takahashi. Figures, the whole Duel Monsters manga set, blu-rays of the movies, even animation genga that’s framed on the wall.
So yeah. Takahashi… meant something to us. I’m just so sick of crying, man. 2022 has been really hard. @studio_dice, thank you for being a huge part of our lives. Thank you for creating an amazing world with stylish and over-the-top characters, for creating the biggest card game in the world. Thank you for everything. Rest well, king. Legends never truly die.
[Here’s some old art from just after high school, when I was in peak YGO brainrot. Thanks for listening to my vent. I still need to talk about TERA too, but… that post’s for another day.]
I did an edit of this panel of the Yugioh manga !! And I loved how it turned out! 😄💕 It’s the first time that I edit something that already exists and it was really fun! I think that if I wanted to make edits of the anime it would require using photoshop perhaps
PD:Yugi remind me to Mai Valentine
My heart goes out to the family of Kazuki Takahashi today in this horrible tragedy. The world has lost someone precious today who has touched the lives of millions with joy and fun. Yugioh has brought me together with so many amazing people and allowed me to meet so many amazing friends. The community that Kazuki Takahashi created from this one work alone has changed my life in ways that I cannot even begin to describe. All I can say is thank you. Thank you for bringing such light into the world and thank you for giving me a friend when I needed one. Your story means the world to me and has given me comfort like no other. Thank you for creating such relatable and lovable characters and thank you for inspiring others in so many ways. Your story and your name will not be forgotten.
