Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive–it’s such an interesting world. It wouldn’t be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There’d be no scope for imagination then, would there?

For most of my life, I’ve had to fight the idea that I’m nothing more than someone to throw away, or pass around as needed, or that I’m not capable of being of real help because I’m a girl. But I came to understand that I was the same person the whole time. I’m loved now, but when I wasn’t, it didn’t mean I wasn’t worthy of it. No one but you is allowed to dictate what you’re worth.

So Matilda’s strong, young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world, like ships onto the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message; you are not alone.
