As India attempts to bring about a paradigm shift to chemical-free and sustainable agricultural practices, lessons should be drawn from the coherent approach of the Green Revolution, by ensuring adequate research, administrative and financial support for natural farming, said Vijayshankar. India’s transition should also be well calibrated, learning from the recent crisis in Sri Lanka, as the abrupt withdrawal of chemical fertilisers can adversely impact yield, and thus farmer’s income, he said.

India’s long-term trade partner Sweden launched the India-Sweden Green Transition Partnership (ISGTP) as part of the Indian Sweden Sustainability and Green Transition Day event on Wednesday, 23 November 2022 in Mumbai.
The launch symbolises the two countries’ joint commitment to promote exchange of carbon-neutral business practices and solutions, co-create localised innovations and share expertise and knowledge related to the green transition. Swedish businesses have a significant footprint in India with the operational presence of around 250 companies that are generating over a million jobs directly and indirectly.

India and UNDP jointly launched the "In Our LIFEtime" campaign at a side event of COP 27 in Egypt to inspire young people to promote sustainable living. The acronym LIFE stands for Lifestyle for Environment. The Prime Minister presented the concept of LiFE on November 1, 2021, at COP26 in Glasgow.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav said, “One of the key stakeholders is the youth of today. Developing an understanding of the LiFE among the younger generations is essential for fostering responsible consumption patterns and influencing the lifestyle choices of the generations to come to make them Pro-Planet-People.”

India set itself bold climate action targets at COP27
India is already advancing the COP agenda. India’s climate actions will be a point of focus not just at COP27 but also during its upcoming G20 presidency. India’s ambitious green commitments are particularly extraordinary as its annual per capita carbon footprint is well below 2 tonnes—which is about a fourth of China’s, one-eighth of that of the United States, and less than one-third of the global average. This places India in a unique position of moral leadership as it champions the cause of climate justice for the Global South.
Prime Minister Modi’s historic five-point agenda or ‘Panchamrit’ (five elixirs) consists of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070; attaining the near-term goals of building 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity; meeting 50 percent of energy requirements from renewables; reducing 1 billion tonnes of emissions; and reducing the emissions intensity of India’s GDP by 45 percent by 2030. Most immediately, the Indian government aims to establish 175 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity by 2022. These green commitments provide the framework currently guiding the country’s climate actions, including its strategic use of clean technology.

Farmers for Forests started in late 2014 to incentivize farmers in India to protect existing forests and grow new ones on unused land. In India, “climate change-induced erratic weather patterns are causing decreasing agricultural yields which are adversely impacting farmer’s lives and leading to even more forest land being cleared for agricultural purposes – creating a vicious cycle.”

According to ANI, the USD 25 million initiative aims to expand tree coverage by 28 lakh hectares (outside traditional forests) through agroforestry or by integrating trees into farming systems. It will not only increase the farmer's income but also improve the resilience of the farming system.
In an agroforestry system, farmers add trees to their land and planting them in and near cities have many environmental and socioeconomic benefits, according to the World Resources Institute (WRI) India.

Recognizing the importance of combatting climate change, India has set itself the target of becoming net-zero by 2070. Besides the overall goal for 2070, the country has also set the following targets for 2030:
Meet 50% of energy requirements from renewable energy
Reach a non-fossil fuel capacity of 500GW
Reduce carbon emissions by 1 billion tons
Reduce carbon intensity by 45%

The Delhi Airport has moved to green energy and uses only hydro and solar power for all its energy needs since June 1. With this, the Delhi Airport became the first airport in India to run entirely on hydro and solar power.
Since June 1, the Delhi Airport has adopted renewable energy use from the hydropower plant for its demand of the remaining 94%, thus ending its dependency on non-renewable power. This move will help Delhi Airport in the reduction of indirect energy emissions whopping 200,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.
