HANDELā€™s LARGO , AND A CLASH OF STEELBANDS!
That infamous steelband clash on the Coffee! In the nineteen sixties, Southern Marines Steelband of Marabella was the classic community band; at carnival just about everyone in the community was involved and band was also supported by the local craftsmen and businessmen. The panyard was a busy place on Sundays before carnival; after the well attended practice sessions masqueraders were beingā€¦

Childhood Memories!
Memories! At my age certain memories still cause me to smile, and some of my memories also include my dad, who In my mind was a bit of a character himself. Today I had one such memory that I thought I might share it. When I was a boy we moved from San Fernando to New Grant in the country to facilitate my dad who worked in the oil fields on a crew of men also referred to as ā€œroughnecks ā€œ.Atā€¦

A Steelband Jamboree!
In my humble opinion what the art form needs is to stop pretending that itā€™s an alternative to the concert stage orchestra and return to its roots as the driver of what used to be the worldā€™s greatest street party. In the global context the steelband (not the pan itself) will always be seen as a novelty especially as it loses its image as the driving musical force behind the Trinidad Carnival, anā€¦

Proving the point! The effect of the limited steelband participation on the streets at carnival! Iā€™ve long argued that the absence of steelbands from the streets at carnival had more of an impact on the music and culture than was obvious and this yearā€™s panorama proved my point. Listening once again to the final performances from this yearā€™s panorama I particularly enjoyed the modernā€¦

Progress: It doesnā€™t happen ā€œjust soā€!
Maybe we arenā€™t as smart as we think! Over half a century ago, in the year 1968 I left Trinidad for the first time. I was hired by a company in the US Virgin Islands and was sent a plane ticket from Piaco International Airport in Trinidad to St Croix. There was something of a construction boom taking place; both the Harvey Alumina plant where I was employed and the nearby Hess Oil refinery wereā€¦

God, Science and the Supernatural
Many of us believe in a Creator of all things, including the universe as we know it. Iā€™m also a believer but I happen to support the scientific theory of the Big Bang, and the expanding universe . Recent scientific discoveries however, have demonstrated our limited understanding of what happened before the Big Bang, and what caused it. As far as Iā€™m concerned, the scientific evidence doesnā€™tā€¦

1986, a Year of Triumph and Sadness for the Boston Celtics
1986 was indeed a Year of Triumph and Sadness for the Celticsā€¦ The year was 1986 and our team was flying high; we had won the NBA championship that year and the icing on the cake was the fact that we had the number two pick in the upcoming draft. The 1986 Championship Team The consensus number two pick that year was Leonard Kevin Bias who played for the Maryland Terrapins.During his four yearsā€¦

Soulful Memoriesā€¦
Otis Redding. One of the positives of being of a certain age is the wealth of our memories .Today Iā€™m remembering how much my friends and I loved soul music, and in my case particularly the soulful music of the great Otis Redding. Otis Redding- My Loverā€™s Prayer Otis died at only 26 , very young and yet he left us so much beautiful music . I remember that I wept when I heard of his passing onā€¦

Peter Toshā€¦The Legend Live!
As far as Iā€™m concerned, Peter Tosh is a reggae star second in acclaim only to the great Bob Marley.I was privileged to see Peter Tosh on this concert tour when he visited Boston in 1983 and it remains one of my most memorable experiences. This is a video of a classic concert performance during that tour, is probably one of the best examples of classic reggae music available on YouTube, and IMHOā€¦

AN UNFORGETTABLE PANORAMA PERFORMANCE FROM THE EARLY DAYS
ā€¦ I consider this another historic panorama performance by a legendary panorama band. From Panorama 1969 , the greatness of arranger Earl Rodney, and the power of Solo Harmonites in full display with this rocking version of Sparrowā€™s. ā€œBongoā€. Another impactful steelband of the nineteen sixties was the Solo Harmonites Steel Orchestra. This was a big band that brought half the savannah down theā€¦

To Believe (in God) or not. That is the Question! Normally I prefer to keep my spiritual thoughts private, but often I see posts on social media ridiculing some of us who believe in a God as Creator of the universe.Admittedly, some of us , especially some of those who call themselves ā€œevangelical Christianā€™sā€ make utterances on social media and elsewhere that make us believers look silly .Howeverā€¦

A Fire in Babylon
The fine documentary ā€œ Fire in Babylonā€ tells the story of the West Indian cricket team tour of England in 1976. South African born English batsman Tony Grieg promised on television to make the West Indians ā€œgrovelā€. Whether or not he meant it, the West Indians took it as demeaning and racist, and showed their anger in such a dominant manner on the playing field (the cricket pitch) that it was later referred to in a documentary as a ā€œFire in Babylonā€

RECOGNIZING THE HEROES AND CREATORS OF THE STEELPAN INSTRUMENT
RECOGNIZING THE HEROES AND CREATORS OF THE STEELPANĀ INSTRUMENT
Iā€™m never quite comfortable with assigning the creation of these instruments to individuals, except in specific instances like the spider web by Tony Williams or the high tenor by Bertie marshall as examples. Early Steelband In the early days as I recall most steelbands had tuners, and these guys copied from each other. Pan tuning wasnā€™t a valued craft as it is today, and guys were mostlyā€¦

Merry Christmas, with Music!
Merry Christmas, withĀ Music!
On July 1st, 2019, my friend Errol Phillips passed away.An extremely talented musician from Woodbrook, Trinidad, and an ex Starlift Steel Orchestra player, this versatile musician mastered the bass, guitar, keyboards, and particularly the tenor pan.Errol was one of the few Trinidadians Iā€™ve ever known locally in New Hampshire, and I do miss him. However, we can still appreciate his great musicalā€¦

I Remember Polio ā€¦
Thought for todayā€¦I Remember Polio.. I recently celebrated my 76th birthday, and as a child growing up in Trinidad in the 1950s, I remember the sadness of children paralyzed by polio.I also remember outbreaks of measles and mumps and even chickenpox which , though not eliminated has been under carnival for decades, and itā€™s occurrence dramatically reduced. These diseases and others are notā€¦
