마르쿠스 아우렐리우스의 초상

마르쿠스 아우렐리우스(재위 161~180년)는 철학에 대한 높은 관심과 그리스어로 쓴 『명상록』 때문에 철인(哲人) 황제로 불렸다. 그의 초상은 굵고 곱슬곱슬한 머리 모양과 비슷한 형태의 수염, 튀어나온 큰 눈, 처진 눈꺼풀이 특징이다. 황제의 초상에는 특정한 가치를 전달하려는 정치적 의도가 들어 있다. 이 초상은 성찰적인 지식인의 모습을 강조했는데, 마르쿠스 아우렐리우스의 삶을 보면 결코 과장은 아니다.

파종 축제 때 바칠 동물의 수를 적은 장부

기원전 2043년경 바빌리에서 열린 아키투 파종 축제에 참여한 40여 명이 신에게 제물로 올릴 동물의 종류와 수를 정하여 그 내역을 상세하게 기록한 장부입니다. 동물의 종류는 살찐 황소, 살찐 양, 최상급의 살찐 양, 양, 다 자란 염소로 구분되어 있습니다. 지금도 회계 분야에서 사용되는 일람표의 아주 이른 사례입니다.
