Historically speaking, the contributions of women in India have had a very great impact on shaping and moulding the society, as they overcame socio economic challenges that were creating a significant imbalance in the society.
Today Indian women are the pioneers, who have broken gender barriers, worked hard for their rights, and made progress in the fields of politics, arts, science, law, etc.
Empowering Women with  Education
Education is the most profound and delightful instrument to strengthen and shape the life of the grassroots to educate and make them an asset to society for a great life in the future. But for women, education has always been a great tool to voice their opinions and be seen in the world as an equal individual.
Since years, India has been meticulously working to empower women with the irreversible power of inclusive education, India has introduced several legal rights that give women the protection of equally getting educated and employed.
Starting with the Right to Education, The Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 inserted Article 21-A in the Constitution of India to provide free and compulsory education for all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a Fundamental Right in such a manner as the State may, by law, determine. The RTE Act mandates free and compulsory education for all children aged 6 to 14 years.
This provision has led to a substantial increase in the enrolment of girls in schools across India. The Act has played a crucial role in breaking down barriers to education, especially in rural areas where access was limited. It has opened up opportunities for girls to break the cycle of poverty, participate in the workforce, and contribute to the economic development of their families and communities.
Further, Article 15 - Prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth empowers women to get an education without the fear of being shunned away because of their gender.
With the strong implementation of such a legal framework, India has seen a positive change in women garnering education. Girls’ education reduces inequality in society. As per the 2011 Census, the total literacy rate in India stands at 74.00 percent and the literacy rate among women is 65.46 percent. The percentage of female literacy in the country was 54.16 percent in 2001.
The UDISE+ 2021-22 data reveals that the overall dropout rate in schools in India is 1.5 percent, which is lower than the previous year’s rate of 1.8 percent. The data also reveals that boys are more likely to drop out of school than girls in all three categories. The average dropout rate for girls in primary school is 1.4 percent, compared to 1.6 percent for boys.
Women 's Empowerment- From Grassroots to Endless Sky

Furthermore, women are the inspiration for other women, many stories were created and inspired for others, which has shaped the future of thousands and made many successful in upholding their dreams and admiring the reality that they never dreamed of, women achievers who have made a significant impact on society, paving the way for future generations who had achieved some greater perspective leading towards excellence for a greater hope to reach the endless sky, they are determined to tightening all the loose ends and being the ruler of their kingdom and showering the knowledge of wisdom upon everyone.

Women Empowerment - Ripple Effect for all
Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women, as women, need to empower themselves and make their voices heard, whether it is at workplaces as well as homemakers. Many examples come up of those who traveled a long journey with lots of hardship and struggled to shape the future for women though it is in the field of entrepreneurship, or healthcare, having skillful knowledge motivates them to earn and stand on their legs.
Social women entrepreneurs like Ruma Devi, a social activist and entrepreneur from Barmer, Rajasthan is the founder of the Gramin Vikas Chetna Sansthan, an organization that works to empower rural women through skill development and entrepreneurship.
While, Richa Mohan collaborated with several grassroots-level NGOs, social research firms, and consultancy firms before establishing her own NGO, Empowering Minds (EM), in 2009 its education center in Arthala, Ghaziabad provides formal and non-formal education to more than 140 children from low-income families.
These women have braved enough to change their circumstances to benefit not only personal but also social and steer the future of women towards a safer, equal and dignified world. Revolutionizing Healthcare with Innovations Enhancing Access and Quality Care
As we strive towards becoming a holistically developed nation, it becomes increasingly evident that embracing technological advancements in the Indian healthcare system is not merely an option but a necessity. This shift towards healthcare innovations holds the promise of transforming the sector, making it more inclusive, efficient, and responsive to the diverse needs of individuals, especially in regions with limited access to traditional healthcare facilities.
Breaking Geographical Barriers with Health Innovation
Over the last few years, human civilization has been fortunate enough to witness a myriad of innovations that have enhanced healthcare quality and accessibility. Post-pandemic, the world has embraced digitalization of healthcare seamlessly.
Bridging gaps with Telemedicine
An affordable and accessible innovation, Telemedicine has changed the face of Rural India’s healthcare.  It has helped to take quality medical care to the remote corners of the country, bridging the gap between patients in rural corners of India and advanced Indian medical services.  It has proven to become a lifeline for many people living in rural India as now they can avail timely medical consultations, diagnosis and treatment easily.
According to ISRO, Telemedicine has been a success in India since its inception. It was observed that through the network established by ISRO, 22 super specialty hospitals had been connected with 78 rural and remote hospitals across the nation. Patients in remote areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Andaman & Nicobar Island, and Tribal pockets of the Northeast have been able to leverage quality medical assistance through Telemedicine.
Mobile Medical Units- Spreading Health & Smile on Wheels
Another health innovation that has significantly reformed the Indian medical structure is the advent of Mobile Medical Units. This new way of reaching the unreachables in the remote corners of India has significantly curbed the healthcare disparities being faced by the rural and underserved communities in India.
These units, equipped with basic medical facilities and staffed by trained professionals, traverse remote regions, delivering primary healthcare services directly to the doorstep of communities. Such initiatives have proven instrumental in reaching populations that are otherwise inaccessible due to geographical constraints or lack of infrastructure.
Healthy Communities with Digitized Medical Camps
As a developing nation, it is pertinent for India to envision and channel our resources into building healthier communities. By promoting and practicing regular health camps augmented with digital innovations, the masses can leverage the benefits of quality healthcare regularly, as it serves as a powerful tool for preventive healthcare and health promotion.
These camps, often organized in collaboration with local healthcare authorities and non-profit organizations, provide a platform for screening, immunization, and health education initiatives. By integrating digital technologies such as health monitoring apps and electronic medical records, these camps enhance efficiency, accuracy, and continuity of care.
Unite to Democratize Healthcare with Smile Foundation
The one thing that must be set out straight and without any negotiation is the fact that Quality care is no longer a luxury, but a right and social responsibility of all. Be it the government, big-giant corporations, social stakeholders and citizens, it is a duty for all of us to ensure that the marvels of advanced healthcare reach every living person, regardless of their socio-economic status or geographical limitations.
Thus, as part of our responsibility towards the overall welfare of our nation, Smile Foundation has been determined to make healthcare innovations affordable, accessible, and available to the marginalized communities of India for over a decade now. As a non-governmental organization working closely on the grassroots level, we firmly believe that the power of digital healthcare can change the dynamics of the Indian healthcare system.
Aligned with the United Nations SDG 3- Good Health and Well being for All, Smile Foundation’s health program has evolved with time by incorporating new healthcare innovations such as Telemedicine, and Smile on Wheels, while, facilitating regular health camps and static clinics with advanced medical facilities, so that our beneficiaries can seamlessly leverage new medical innovations without burning a hole in their pockets.
To support the public healthcare system and share the load of the government, Smile Foundation works to provide quality primary healthcare services at the doorsteps of the unreachable. Each year over 10 Lakh beneficiaries in different parts of the country benefit from Smile Foundation’s Health innovation program such as-
Smile on Wheels
With 71 Smile on Wheels-i.e, Mobile Medical Units, we have been able to provide many marginalized communities with quality care. Each unit has been equipped with OPD, point-of-care test facilities and medicines that are administered to the patients by doctors and well-trained paramedics.
2. Quality care through Telemedicine
As part of our mission to provide everyone with the best healthcare facilities, we have created 10 Telemedicine Units as well as specialized teleconsultation services in states like Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Through these telemedicine units, patients in rural India can avail of specialized treatments by consulting doctors from urban health centers through e-health kiosks.
3. Regular Healthcamps
To continue the service of providing quality healthcare to our beneficiaries, Smile Foundation organizes regular health camps. Over 100 health camps provide need-based healthcare services to specific target groups where they can consult specialized doctors and avail the benefits of point-of-care test services and also surgical facilities sometimes.
4. `Static Clinics- Next Level of Accessible Healthcare
To ensure that India’s rural communities have access to healthcare innovations at all times, Smile Foundation has created 3 Static clinics that provide OPD medicines, point-of-care facilities and counseling with a focus on physiotherapy services.
To be a holistically developed nation, Smile Foundation believes that India must collectively adapt and embrace digital healthcare innovations to create an equal healthcare ecosystem. Innovations like telemedicine to mobile medical units and regular health camps represent a step towards realizing the vision of a healthier, more resilient nation.
By adopting these innovations, unite with Smile Foundation’s health initiatives for the marginalized communities of India to steer the future of Indian healthcare, where access knows no boundaries and quality care is a fundamental right for all.

Inclusive Education: Bridging Gaps and Creating Opportunities for All
Inclusive education is not a fancy term but a need of the hour as it is high time that educational institutions and methods move beyond barriers of socio-economic status, gender and disabilities. Teachers, parents and students must embrace and practice the concept of Inclusive education as the new and ethical norm of education if we wish to build a world that keeps the foundations of humanity standing tall and strong.
As the world progresses with advanced technology, it is pertinent to ensure that our children and youth are equipped with quality and relevant education that shall help them to avail career opportunities that would help them achieve a secure and dignified future.
Why is Inclusive education important?
Going beyond barriers
One of the primary goals of inclusive education is to break down barriers to learning and participation. By providing accommodations, modifications, and support services, schools can ensure that underprivileged students or students with special needs have equal access to education. This may include assistive technologies, specialized instruction, and individualized learning plans tailored to each student's unique strengths and challenges.
Fostering a Culture of Diversity
Inclusive education fosters a culture of acceptance and celebration of diversity. It encourages students to appreciate and respect differences, promoting empathy and understanding. Through collaborative learning experiences and peer interactions, students learn to appreciate each other's unique perspectives and abilities, breaking down stereotypes and prejudices.
Empowering every student with resources
Inclusive education empowers students to reach their full potential, regardless of their background or abilities. By providing appropriate support, schools can help students overcome barriers to learning and develop the skills they need to succeed academically and socially. Inclusive classrooms promote independence, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging among all students.
Opportunity Creation for all
Inclusive education creates opportunities for all students to learn and grow together. By embracing diversity and accommodating varying learning needs, schools can tap into the unique talents and strengths of each student, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. Inclusive classrooms provide a rich learning environment where students collaborate, problem-solve, and explore new ideas together.
Establishing an Inclusive Society
Beyond the classroom, inclusive education plays a crucial role in building a more inclusive society. By promoting equality, diversity, and social justice, inclusive education lays the foundation for a society where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully and contribute meaningfully. It challenges systemic barriers and promotes a more inclusive mindset that extends beyond the school gates.
Inclusive Education- Future of India’s Educational System
There is no doubt that inclusive education goes beyond mere integration; it strives to create a supportive and nurturing environment where every student feels valued and included. It recognizes that diversity enriches the learning experience and seeks to accommodate the needs of all learners, regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or circumstances. Inclusive education promotes collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect among students and educators.
With the introduction of the National Education Policy, India has taken a firm step towards inclusive education. The National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020 underscores the pivotal role of education as a powerful means to foster social justice and equality. This emphasis carries significant implications for cultivating an inclusive community and broader society. To effectively implement this policy, it is imperative to tackle educational obstacles and enhance facilities and services for Children with Special Needs (CwSN). The NEP integrates disability inclusion across its entirety, dedicating a specific chapter to equitable and inclusive education. This chapter delves into addressing issues, overcoming challenges, and offering recommendations to narrow the gaps and promote equal access and participation for all learners.
Quality Education results in Opportunity Creation
A recent report from the UN revealed that over 50% of India's population is aged below 25, totaling over 600 million individuals. With such a significant portion consisting of young people, India appears poised for a promising future. The youth also make up a considerable segment of the country's workforce, indicating potential for growth and development.
Considering such a promising future with young people in India, it gets even more pertinent to pay attention to Inclusive education and including every child and individual regardless of their socio-economic status, bodily capabilities become even more crucial because this would positively impact the future of the nation, giving it a boost to its economy while achieving national welfare.
Smile Foundation believes that inclusive education is not just about providing access to education; it's about creating a culture of acceptance, empowerment, and opportunity for all. By embracing diversity and accommodating varying learning needs, schools can bridge gaps and create a more inclusive society where every individual has the chance to thrive in a world filled with equal opportunities for all.

Digital Solutions for Social Impact- Leveraging Technology for Change
As the world adapts to the new technological trends with each passing day, the social service sector has too moved to infuse advanced technologies to enhance their workings while creating a large and sustainable impact on the ground. By harnessing Social innovation and technology in the workings of organizations, efficiency has been enhanced significantly. With streamlined data management, the outreach has been expanded leading to connecting to relevant stakeholders and achieving positive outcomes with accurate impact measurements.
Social Innovation- For Impactful & Positive Changes
Social innovation, at its core, involves the development and implementation of new ideas to address social challenges effectively. Unlike conventional CSR, which often involves one-off donations or initiatives, social innovation integrates social impact into the core business strategy. This paradigm shift is propelled by a growing recognition that philanthropy should not only address immediate needs but also strive to create systemic change.
Cross-sector Collaboration for better reach
One prominent trend driving this shift is the rise of cross-sector collaborations. Recognizing the complex nature of social issues, organizations are increasingly forming partnerships with governments, non-profits, and other businesses to pool resources and expertise. These collaborations foster innovation by leveraging diverse perspectives and resources, leading to more comprehensive solutions.
Sustainable Long-term impacts
Another crucial aspect of this evolution is the emphasis on sustainability and long-term impact. While traditional philanthropy may focus on short-term projects, social innovation seeks to create lasting change by addressing root causes and building resilience within communities. This shift towards sustainability aligns with the growing demand for accountability and transparency from both consumers and investors.
Infusing Technology for the greater good
Technology also plays a pivotal role in driving philanthropic innovation. From crowdfunding platforms to blockchain-enabled transparency, technology has revolutionized the way organizations engage with donors and track the impact of their initiatives.
Along with the integration of SAAS Platforms, organizations can now have seamless operations by digitizing their day-to-day workings for better outputs. Furthermore, by investing in Citizen Development, organizations can align themselves with helpful technological solutions without investing too much. By training their employees, especially the ones who belong to non-IT- backgrounds with the required knowledge to create applications, organizations can optimize their resources and also save money.
Furthermore, there is a growing recognition of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in philanthropy. As society becomes more aware of systemic inequalities, there is a call for philanthropic organizations to prioritize diversity in their leadership, decision-making processes, and grant allocations. By embracing DEI principles, organizations can ensure that their initiatives are more responsive to the needs of marginalized communities.
Tech & Social innovation- Global Overview
Post the pandemic, globally many social organizations have brought changes in their working mechanisms, by adopting more technological tools in their processes, as a rapid response to the challenges they faced during the pandemic. With a focused concentration on adaptive approaches to create sustainable social impact, many philanthropic organizations  have infused technology to overcome their core social cause, for example-
Simon Community in Scotland has developed its app “ By My Side”, which intends to promote inclusion of the underserved communities. It provides access to digital services to reduce drug-related deaths and homelessness through education.
Looking at the changing philanthropic trends, the project lead of “Digital Outreach Work with Young People” in Bravia, Mr. Jonsa Lutz highlighted the importance of a well-trained workforce with digital knowledge. He explained that investing in digital streetworkers, who are specially trained to reach young people through social media and online games can always offer confidential and anonymous counseling to young people as well as low-barrier access to youth welfare services.
Therefore, with all new developments happening there is no doubt that the future of philanthropy is undeniably intertwined with social innovation. By embracing collaborative partnerships, sustainability, technology, DEI principles, and adaptability, organizations can maximize their impact and drive meaningful change in society. However, navigating this shift requires a willingness to challenge conventional wisdom, experiment with new approaches, and learn from both successes and failures.
In conclusion, the landscape of philanthropy is undergoing a profound transformation, with a shift towards social innovation at its core. Aligning ourselves with the new age and new need, Smile Foundation is embracing this evolution and embracing the key trends shaping the future of philanthropy, organizations can better fulfill their mission of creating positive and lasting change in the world. As we navigate this journey together, let us seize the opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and drive meaningful impact for generations to come.

From CSR to Social Innovation: Trends Shaping the Future of Philanthropy trends
From time immemorial, philanthropy has been part of our social fabric. Call it charity, social service or Daan, philanthropy has many names, but the common goal is to help those in need. Thus, inspired by our traditional values and social responsibility towards the welfare of our nation by aiming to achieve goodness at a large scale for those in need, in 2014 the Indian Government introduced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a mandate for multinational corporations to contribute 2% of their average profits made during the preceding three years.
Furthermore, to ensure that philanthropy reaches those who require it, new social innovations are being introduced and implemented in the field to manage and expand resources, so that through a seamless process, the benefits of philanthropy reach their right destination.
New Age Calls for New Philanthropy Trends
Purpose-driven Innovation is the norm
Companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of aligning their business goals with broader societal needs.  According to a study released by Project ROI, Corporate Responsibility (CR) holds the capacity to boost sales by as much as 20%, influence fluctuations in customer satisfaction by over 10%, and diminish the average employee turnover rate by 25% to 50% over time. Purpose-driven innovation involves developing products, services, and business models that address pressing social and environmental challenges while also driving business growth. This approach not only creates a positive impact but also enhances brand reputation and customer loyalty.
2. Technology Integration for Social Advancement
The social development sector works closely with the underserved or marginalized communities, hence, it gets pertinent to blend in upcoming technology to achieve optimal results because of different social innovations. From artificial intelligence and big data analytics to blockchain and virtual reality, technology offers innovative solutions to complex social and environmental issues. For example, AI-powered algorithms can optimize supply chains for sustainability, while blockchain can ensure transparency and traceability in ethical sourcing practices.
3. Collaborative Partnerships for rippled and lasting positivity
Collaboration is key to driving meaningful change in today's interconnected world. Companies are forming strategic partnerships with governments, non-profits, academia, and other businesses to leverage collective expertise and resources. By working together, organizations can tackle systemic issues more effectively and create scalable solutions. The idea behind collaborative partnerships is to allow stakeholders to collectively channel their efforts towards a social goal while establishing themselves as examples of social agents that can stir a ripple effect of creating positive changes for society.
4. Employee Engagement- Agents of Change
Employees are increasingly seeking purpose and meaning in their work. Companies are responding by integrating CSR initiatives into their employee engagement activities. This includes volunteering programs, skills-based volunteering opportunities, and employee-driven sustainability initiatives. Engaged employees not only contribute to a positive corporate culture but also drive innovation and creativity.
5. Impact Reporting for trusted and transparent actions
With growing scrutiny from stakeholders, companies are placing greater emphasis on measuring and reporting their social and environmental impact. Impact measurement tools and frameworks allow businesses to assess the effectiveness of their CSR initiatives and communicate their progress transparently to stakeholders. This data-driven approach enables companies to identify areas for improvement and optimize their CSR strategies for maximum impact.
Development is never an isolated process but a collaborative and strategic journey that requires the support of the government, social stakeholders and individuals of the society. Smile Foundation, an Indian NGO with an experience of over a decade, has been working closely on the ground level for underprivileged children and their families. With a life-cycle approach, Smile Foundation believes that every individual must be allowed to build a sustainable life for themselves as well as their families. By blending CSR and social innovations in the day-to-day working of non-profit organizations, the organization can expand its efforts, save money and time, and most importantly focus on its cause that eventually would result in the ultimate goal of achieving the greater good for the underserved communities and their future generations.

Employee Engagement Beyond the Office: Volunteerism and Social Impact
Employee engagement lies at the heart of Smile Foundation's mission to empower underserved communities and create lasting social change. Through a series of impactful initiatives, Smile Foundation collaborates with corporate partners to involve employees in meaningful activities that contribute to the well-being of marginalised individuals and communities across India. These engagement activities not only strengthen bonds within corporate teams but also make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Let's delve into some of the key employee engagement activities organised by Smile Foundation and their real impact on society.
Meeting Nobel Laureate Mr. Kailash Satyarthi was a momentous occasion for our children, who had the opportunity to interact with him at Adobe's special event in Delhi and Bangalore. The event featured interactive games that not only entertained but also fostered meaningful connections between the young talents and Adobe employees.
The Senior Management Team of Quantiphi visited Smile Foundation’s skill training centre in Bengaluru, offering interactive counselling sessions for our trainees. Led by their founder Reghu, a team of 22 volunteers, including successful corporate leaders, engaged in mock interviews and shared valuable tips to prepare students for job opportunities. This enriching experience left a lasting impression on both the trainees and volunteers.
Smile Foundation and Avery Dennison joined forces on #InternationalYogaDay, guiding 50 beneficiaries, including women and adolescent girls, through invigorating yoga sessions. The practice of various asanas and breathing exercises not only promoted physical and mental well-being but also fostered unity among the Avery Dennison team members. Yoga poses were especially beneficial for managing hormonal imbalances and promoting reproductive health among teenagers.
Employees of PepsiCo India teamed up with children from Smile Foundation for the ‘Build a Bike Challenge,’ aiming to provide bicycles to children living far from school. The employees competed in a healthy competition to build bicycles from scratch, engaging children in the process and providing them with a unique learning experience.
Wells Fargo employees joined Smile Foundation at our Mission Education centre in Bengaluru for a clay moulding and seed ball making activity with the children. This hands-on experience not only brought joy to the children but also created memorable moments and spread smiles throughout the community.
These engaging employee activities exemplify Smile Foundation's commitment to building connections, empowering communities, and creating lasting impact through meaningful partnerships. With each interaction, we strive to inspire positive change and foster a brighter future for children living in the margins.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Done Right: Impactful Projects That Make a Difference
In recent years, the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has evolved from a mere obligation to a strategic imperative for businesses worldwide. Companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of giving back to society and investing in projects that create positive social and environmental impact. In this context, impactful CSR initiatives have emerged as powerful tools for driving meaningful change and fostering sustainable development. Let's explore some examples of CSR projects of Smile Foundation that are making a real difference in communities around the world.
Project Manzil
In rural Rajasthan, where societal norms often dictate the paths of young girls, initiatives like Smile Foundation's Project Manzil are reshaping futures. Seema, once pushed towards traditional courses, found her calling in office assistance, breaking stereotypes with the support of Manzil's community motivators. As the world celebrates women in science and technology, Manzil empowers girls to pursue non-traditional fields like IT and retail, doubling enrollment numbers since its inception.
Traditionally, jobs like beauty and tailoring have been synonymous with femininity, providing income opportunities while keeping women indoors. However, limitations arise when girls are confined to these sectors, hindering their potential for career growth and exposure. Manzil's community motivators challenge these norms, encouraging girls to explore diverse career paths beyond traditional roles, fostering a new generation of empowered women.
Through initiatives like Project Manzil, young girls in rural India are breaking barriers and pursuing their dreams in fields like science, technology, and finance. As women continue to make strides in traditionally male-dominated fields, Manzil serves as a beacon of empowerment, proving that with skill training and support, girls can excel in any field they choose, reshaping the narrative of gender roles and empowering communities for a brighter future.
STEM Initiative (Nxplorers)
India's educational landscape is evolving with the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming for inclusivity and adaptability in the digital era. At the heart of this transformation lies the recognition of teachers as educational leaders, entrusted with shaping conducive learning environments. Hence, specialized teacher training programs are essential to equip educators with the necessary skills and confidence to assume leadership roles.
NEP 2020 addresses critical gaps in the education system, emphasizing the urgency to improve foundational skills among students. With a majority of schools being government-run and lacking access to digital resources, preparing students for the future becomes even more challenging. This underscores the significance of teacher development initiatives to bridge these gaps.
The NEP 2020 emphasizes continuous teacher learning and integration of technology into training processes. It intervenes at crucial points in a teacher's professional journey, offering guidance on recruitment, career progression, and lifelong learning. Additionally, specialized teacher training programs of Smile Foundation focusing on STEM subjects align with NEP goals, promoting experiential learning and innovation to prepare students for a dynamic world. Through collaborative efforts like these, India's education system can thrive, empowering teachers and students alike.
Nutrition Enhancement Program
Anemia, a condition characterized by low red blood cell count or hemoglobin levels, remains a significant health concern in India, particularly among pregnant women and infants in rural areas. Despite government initiatives like Anemia Mukt Bharat, the prevalence of anemia persists, affecting up to 50-60% of pregnant women and 58% of children under five years old nationwide. This poses serious health risks and perpetuates cycles of poverty, emphasizing the need for effective interventions.
In Sangrur, Punjab, anemia presents unique challenges despite its relative prosperity. Factors such as dietary habits, cultural practices, and limited healthcare access contribute to high anemia rates in this region. Traditional diets lacking in essential nutrients like iron, coupled with cultural norms surrounding food preparation and consumption, exacerbate the problem. Limited access to quality healthcare further impedes early detection and management of anemia among vulnerable populations.
Addressing anemia requires a multifaceted approach, involving nutritional interventions, supplementation programs, improved healthcare access, and education. Government initiatives like Anemia Mukt Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan aim to reduce anemia prevalence by promoting iron and folic acid supplementation and enhancing healthcare services. Additionally, targeted interventions by organizations like Smile Foundation, such as dietary interventions in schools and counseling sessions, have shown promising results in combating anemia among children. Collaboration between government bodies, development organizations, and communities is essential to achieve an anemia-free future and ensure the health and well-being of all individuals, especially the most vulnerable.
Telemedicine Project- Mewat
Access to healthcare is a fundamental aspect of well-being, impacting not just physical health but also financial, familial, and social aspects of life. In remote areas like Mewat, Haryana, India, where access to modern healthcare is limited, initiatives like the one undertaken by Smile Foundation and Philips are crucial in bridging the gap through technology. Especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, physical consultations with doctors became challenging for the community members of Mewat, necessitating innovative solutions.
The partnership between Smile Foundation and Philips India facilitated the implementation of a mobile telemedicine unit, bringing healthcare services directly to the doorstep of rural communities in Mewat. Through 269 mobile OPDs conducted during the reporting period, a total of 13,753 patients were treated, demonstrating the effectiveness of digital healthcare interventions in addressing the healthcare needs of underserved populations. This initiative not only overcome geographical barriers but also leveraged technology to provide timely medical assistance to those in need.
The success of this healthcare project is underscored by stories like that of Mr. Shankar Hadpad, a farmer who struggled with a skin disease for two years without relief from traditional medical treatments. Through the Smiles on Wheels (SoW) service, Mr. Hadpad received counseling and treatment, resulting in significant improvement in his condition. Telemedicine consultations have emerged as a lifeline for rural communities, offering access to primary healthcare services and contributing to improved health outcomes in underserved areas.
These examples of impactful CSR projects demonstrate the potential for businesses to drive positive change in society. By aligning their corporate objectives with the needs of communities and the environment, companies can create lasting social impact while also enhancing their reputation and long-term sustainability. Through continued commitment to responsible business practices, corporations can play a crucial role in building a better and more equitable world for all.

Unlocking the Potential: How Education Transforms Lives in Underserved Communities
In India, some kids grow up in tough situations. But there's something that can make a big difference– going to school. When kids from poor homes get to go to school, it changes everything for them.
Going to school helps these kids learn things that can help them in life. They learn to read, write, and do maths, but they also learn about the world and how to solve problems. This helps them do better in their future jobs and earn more money.
For children born into no money or marginalised communities in India, the odds are often stacked against them from the very beginning. Limited access to resources, inadequate infrastructure, and social barriers can hinder their ability to receive a quality education. However, despite these challenges, education has the power to break the cycle of poverty and transform lives.
One of the most significant impacts of education on marginalised children is its role in providing them with opportunities for socio-economic mobility. With access to education, children from disadvantaged backgrounds can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to pursue higher education and secure better-paying jobs in the future. Education opens doors to employment opportunities that were previously out of reach, empowering these children to improve their own lives and contribute positively to their communities.
Moreover, education plays an important role in improving the overall health and well-being of marginalised children. By promoting hygiene practices, preventive healthcare, and access to nutritious meals, schools serve as essential platforms for addressing health-related issues in disadvantaged communities. Through initiatives such as school-based health programs and nutrition interventions, education not only enhances children's physical health but also fosters their cognitive development and academic achievement.
In addition to its practical benefits, education instils confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of empowerment in marginalised children. By providing them with the tools to express themselves, think critically, and advocate for their rights, education empowers children to challenge social norms and break free from the cycle of oppression. Education cultivates a sense of agency and autonomy, enabling marginalised children to envision a future where they can pursue their dreams and aspirations without limitations.
Despite the transformative power of education, millions of marginalised children in India still lack access to quality education due to various socio-economic and structural barriers. Government initiatives such as the Right to Education Act and programs like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan aim to address these disparities by promoting universal access to education and improving the quality of schooling for marginalised children. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and cultural biases continue to hinder progress in achieving equitable education for all.
To bridge this gap, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Smile Foundation have been working tirelessly to provide educational opportunities to marginalised children across India. Through initiatives like Swabhiman, Smile Foundation empowers girls from marginalised communities by providing them with access to quality education, life skills training, and support services. By focusing on holistic development and community engagement, programs like Swabhiman are changing the lives of marginalised girls and breaking down barriers to education in India.
School also helps kids feel good about themselves. When they learn new things and do well in school, it makes them feel proud and confident. This confidence helps them believe in themselves and their abilities, which is really important.
But going to school isn't easy for all kids in India. Some kids don't have good schools nearby, or they have to drop out to help their families. This makes it hard for them to get the education they need to have a better life.
To help these kids, there are programs like Smile Foundation's Swabhiman. These programs make it easier for poor kids to go to school by giving them things like books, uniforms, and meals. This way, more kids can get the education they need to change their lives.
In the end, going to school is really important for poor kids in India. It helps them learn, feel good about themselves, and have better opportunities in life. That's why it's so important to make sure that every kid has the chance to go to school and build a brighter future.
In conclusion, education is a powerful tool for uplifting marginalised children in India and creating pathways to a better future. By addressing socio-economic inequalities, promoting health and well-being, and fostering empowerment and agency, education has the potential to transform lives and break the cycle of poverty and marginalisation. However, concerted efforts from government, civil society, and communities are essential to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to receive a quality education and fulfil their potential.

In a world where gender equality remains an ongoing struggle, stories of women's empowerment are inspiring. From overcoming adversity to achieving remarkable feats, these stories highlight the resilience and the undying spirit of women across diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
In this collection, we delve into five captivating stories of courage, perseverance, and empowerment. Each story showcases the incredible journey of a woman who defied the odds, emerged triumphant, and left an indelible mark on the world.
Dr Rukhmabai Bhikaji
Dr Rukhmabai Bhikaji’s name may not be as widely recognized as it deserves, yet her story resonates deeply with those championing feminist causes today. As the first Hindu woman in India to obtain a legal divorce, her landmark case in 1885 marked a precedent in Indian legal history, catalyzing significant legislative changes such as the Age of Consent Act of 1891 and the eradication of child marriage.
Her journey extends far beyond the courtroom, encompassing her pioneering role as one of India's earliest female doctors practicing Western medicine. Born in Mumbai in 1864, Rukhmabai's early experiences, including a child marriage at age 11, fueled her determination to challenge societal norms and fight for women's rights.
Despite facing immense societal pressure, Rukhmabai courageously refused to comply with her husband's demands to live together, leading to a protracted legal battle that captured national attention. Her unwavering stance against an unwanted marriage sparked a nationwide discourse on women's autonomy and set the stage for future feminist movements in India.
Rukhmabai's legacy beyond her legal victory, encompasses her tireless advocacy through writings under the pseudonym 'A Hindu Lady' in the Times of India newspaper and her groundbreaking medical career. Her journey from a child bride to a pioneering physician exemplifies the power of resilience and determination in challenging systemic injustices and inspiring change for generations to come.
Rajalakshmi Sakthivel
Rajalakshmi Sakthivel's journey in the tech industry exemplifies perseverance and determination. Despite graduating as a top student in Electronics and Communication Engineering, she faced initial challenges securing a job in top-tier companies due to limited recruitment opportunities. However, her resilience led her to excel in roles at companies like ADS Exports and CG Smith Software, where she honed her skills and discovered her passion for the automotive industry.
Transitioning to Delphi's offshore development center marked a turning point in Sakthivel's career, propelling her towards leadership roles and groundbreaking projects. She played an important role in the launch of the Tata Nano, a project she describes with immense pride, highlighting her contributions to product design and engineering.
Throughout her journey, Sakthivel navigated personal challenges, including pregnancy, with remarkable resolve, balancing her professional responsibilities with personal milestones. Her dedication and expertise earned her recognition as the first female technical lead at APTIV and later as Senior Director at HARMAN International, where she oversees global initiatives in car audio technology.
As a senior woman leader in the tech industry, Sakthivel advocates for initiatives to retain and support women in tech careers. She emphasizes the importance of organizations identifying and nurturing women talent from early stages, providing clear career paths and support systems to address challenges such as work-life balance and imposter syndrome. Through her inspiring journey, Sakthivel continues to pave the way for future generations of women in technology.
Ismat Chughtai
Ismat Chughtai, affectionately known as Ismat Apa, was born into a liberal Muslim family in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, in 1915. Her stories delve deep into the lives of women from diverse backgrounds, reflecting her keen observations and empathetic understanding. Despite facing controversies and criticism, Chughtai fearlessly continued to amplify the voices of women through her writings, challenging societal taboos and norms.
One of Chughtai's seminal works, "Lihaf," stirred controversy upon its release in 1942, yet garnered acclaim for its bold exploration of female desire. Despite facing legal repercussions for obscenity, Chughtai stood her ground, emerging as a symbol of defiance against societal constraints. Over time, her stories have been reinterpreted by different segments of society, reflecting evolving perspectives on gender and sexuality.
Chughtai's association with the Progressive Writers' Association in 1936 marked a standalone moment in her literary journey, aligning her work with fellow visionaries like Sadat Hasan Manto. Despite facing censorship and public scrutiny, Chughtai's progressive ideals reshaped the literary landscape of her time. Her feminist themes and nuanced portrayals of female characters continue to resonate with readers across generations.
In adapting to changing times, Chughtai explored various mediums, including plays and films, further expanding her influence on contemporary literature and art. Today, her legacy endures through adaptations of her works and scholarly interpretations, reaffirming her status as a pioneering voice in Indian literature. Ismat Chughtai's fearless spirit and unapologetic storytelling continue to inspire readers, activists, and feminists, transcending barriers of gender and time.
Nalini Malini
Born in 1946 in Karachi against the backdrop of India's partition, Malani's formative years were deeply influenced by the workings of that era, instilling in her a keen awareness of identity, displacement, and societal injustices. Her journey into the world of art began with formal education at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Mumbai, followed by a transformative stint at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on a French Government Scholarship, where she was exposed to diverse influences that shaped her artistic vision.

As a pioneering artist, Nalini Malani's legacy transcends generations, reminding us of the transformative power of art in fostering meaningful dialogue and effecting positive change in society.
Laxmi Agarwal
The movie "Chhapaak" draws inspiration from the real-life journey of Laxmi Agarwal, a courageous acid attack survivor whose resilience has touched hearts around the world. Born into a middle-class family in Delhi, Laxmi's aspirations of becoming a singer were abruptly altered by a tragic incident that would change her life forever.
Naeem Khan, a suitor twice her age, unleashed a horrific attack on Laxmi in 2005, as she made her way to a bookshop. The acid assault left her writhing in agony, enduring extensive physical and emotional trauma. Recalling the ordeal, Laxmi vividly described the sensation of her skin melting away, leaving her with a shattered sense of identity.
Despite the profound impact of the attack, Laxmi's indomitable spirit shone through as she embarked on a journey of resilience and advocacy. Filing a Public Interest Litigation in 2006, she sought to ban the sale of acid, leading to landmark legal reforms in 2013. Her courageous activism earned her global recognition, including the prestigious International Women of Courage Award from former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Notwithstanding personal challenges and societal scrutiny, Laxmi continued to champion the cause of acid attack survivors, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience. Her unwavering commitment to justice and human rights serves as a testament to the power of courage and advocacy in the face of adversity.
