Stories and thoughts sometimes may differ from reality as we talk about the achievement of development from the grassroots to a greater height for a hope of wisdom to change, change for a better tomorrow, and enlighten the women's community for equality and prosperity accessing the end-to-end needs of society, and not falling behind in any aspect of life be it education, sports, cultural development, regional knowledge, etc. 

Historically speaking, the contributions of women in India have had a very great impact on shaping and moulding the society, as they overcame socio economic challenges that were creating a significant imbalance in the society.  

Today Indian women are the pioneers, who have broken gender barriers, worked hard for their rights, and made progress in the fields of politics, arts, science, law, etc.

Empowering Women with  Education 

Education is the most profound and delightful instrument to strengthen and shape the life of the grassroots to educate and make them an asset to society for a great life in the future. But for women, education has always been a great tool to voice their opinions and be seen in the world as an equal individual.

Since years, India has been meticulously working to empower women with the irreversible power of inclusive education, India has introduced several legal rights that give women the protection of equally getting educated and employed.

Starting with the Right to Education, The Constitution (Eighty-sixth Amendment) Act, 2002 inserted Article 21-A in the Constitution of India to provide free and compulsory education for all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a Fundamental Right in such a manner as the State may, by law, determine. The RTE Act mandates free and compulsory education for all children aged 6 to 14 years. 

This provision has led to a substantial increase in the enrolment of girls in schools across India. The Act has played a crucial role in breaking down barriers to education, especially in rural areas where access was limited. It has opened up opportunities for girls to break the cycle of poverty, participate in the workforce, and contribute to the economic development of their families and communities.

Further, Article 15 - Prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth empowers women to get an education without the fear of being shunned away because of their gender.

With the strong implementation of such a legal framework, India has seen a positive change in women garnering education. Girls’ education reduces inequality in society. As per the 2011 Census, the total literacy rate in India stands at 74.00 percent and the literacy rate among women is 65.46 percent. The percentage of female literacy in the country was 54.16 percent in 2001.

The UDISE+ 2021-22 data reveals that the overall dropout rate in schools in India is 1.5 percent, which is lower than the previous year’s rate of 1.8 percent. The data also reveals that boys are more likely to drop out of school than girls in all three categories. The average dropout rate for girls in primary school is 1.4 percent, compared to 1.6 percent for boys.

Celebrating their perseverance and the zest to make an identity for themselves and be independent, Smile Foundation's Swabhiman program has come across very inspiring women who have changed the course of their as well as their family's lives, by just believing in themselves and taking a chance on skills and learning.

Women like Bhawana have become a testament to women's will to uplift themselves and live a dignified life. Her entrepreneurial journey of earning and becoming the sole breadwinner of the family, with the help of the Swabhiman initiative has been an inspiration for several underprivileged women in India.

 Women Empowerment - Ripple Effect for all

Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women, as women, need to empower themselves and make their voices heard, whether it is at workplaces as well as homemakers. Many examples come up of those who traveled a long journey with lots of hardship and struggled to shape the future for women though it is in the field of entrepreneurship, or healthcare, having skillful knowledge motivates them to earn and stand on their legs.

Social women entrepreneurs like Ruma Devi, a social activist and entrepreneur from Barmer, Rajasthan is the founder of the Gramin Vikas Chetna Sansthan, an organization that works to empower rural women through skill development and entrepreneurship.

While, Richa Mohan collaborated with several grassroots-level NGOs, social research firms, and consultancy firms before establishing her own NGO, Empowering Minds (EM), in 2009 its education center in Arthala, Ghaziabad provides formal and non-formal education to more than 140 children from low-income families.

These women have braved enough to change their circumstances to benefit not only personal but also social and steer the future of women towards a safer, equal and dignified world. They have broken stereotypes and societal norms making a remarkable difference in the lives of people living in rural India.

As part of our mission to provide everyone with the best healthcare facilities, we have created 10 Telemedicine Units as well as specialized teleconsultation services in states like Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad. Through these telemedicine units, patients in rural India can avail of specialized treatments by consulting doctors from urban health centers through e-health kiosks.

Over 100 health camps provide need-based healthcare services to specific target groups where they can consult specialized doctors and avail the benefits of point-of-care test services and also surgical facilities sometimes.

This enriching experience left a lasting impression on both the trainees and volunteers.

Smile Foundation and Avery Dennison joined forces on #InternationalYogaDay, guiding 50 beneficiaries, including women and adolescent girls, through invigorating yoga sessions. Through 269 mobile OPDs conducted during the reporting period, a total of 13,753 patients were treated, demonstrating the effectiveness of digital healthcare interventions in addressing the healthcare needs of underserved populations.
