Week 13
Personal showcase
Going into the final stages of animation now. Looking back there is a lot I would change about this project. Though I like the idea and the message it has I think I could have done it a lot more effectively, with more time I could have created a stronger body of work, unfortunately due to personal issues, my projects for this unit have been very difficult to complete which is a shame since I think this could have been a really polished animation with a meaningful message behind it. I am proud of some of the work I’ve done for this, I like the moral and the story, I’m also quite fond of my monster characters!
Collaboration
I’m really happy with how this project is going so far, our idea keeps developing into more of a unique and fascinating story and I think it’ll be a lot of fun to make! Our designs look great so far and my only worry is that the story and designs will end up being to complex and we’ll find ourselves struggling to finish it, but hopefully with some dedication this project will turn the way we want it to. I’m very happy with my team, Chloe and I get on well and I think that even though we’ll have more to do than if we had a big team it’ll be easier to make decisions and work out plans.

Week 8
Collaboration
After looking onto war torn and natural disaster areas, we’ve had the idea that the lower world should show remnants of society long ago that was destroyed by something unknown. There will be little hints to what happened with statues depicting people praying, discarded toys lying around and signs of human mutation. We want to suggest that all of the bizarre creatures in the world may all once have been humans but due to some unknown disaster they have mutated!

Week 7
Collaboration
We’ve been designing our main character for the animation, the character is a small boy with a torch device attached to his backpack. The use of a small young character will make the terrors of the lower world more threatening, he looks unable to defend himself which will allow the viewer to care for the character and worry that he’ll be eaten by one of the creatures! Hopefully this will help bring emotion and suspense to the film. We’ve decided that the boy in our story will enter a door which then drops him into the other world, the door will have a magical energy to it, being hypnotic and tempting the boy to enter. He is compelled to enter the world even though he’s scared. This relates to our title, ‘Numinous’ meaning a song sense of fear and awe at what’s before you. The boy is fearful of the other world but is also faliscated and keen to find out more. I’ve been sketching out some of the creatures in the world, attempting to make them scary and threatening looking. The colours we will be using will be different in each world, the upper being vibrant and filled with greens while the lower being dark and filled with shadows. We’ll use lighting to create suspense with the character’s torch lighting up some areas while keeping others in the dark leaving the viewer to wonder what else is out there that can’t be seen.

Week 6
Personal showcase
This week I developed the animation further. I also made the backgrounds for the animation, the bedroom setting and the restaurant setting.
Collaboration
Developing our idea further we decided that there will be two distinct location, for now called the ‘upper world’ and the ‘lower world’. The upper world will be where the character starts out in the story, the location will be bright and filled with nature and friendly creatures, but when the boy travels to the lower world it’s dark, scary and filled with terrifying monsters. As for how h gets to the other world, We’ve been toying with the idea of the character falling into a hole as a homage to Alice in Wonderland, or finding a door that he enters.

Week 5
Personal showcase
I started cleaning up my animations and working out where I want to animate the finished ten seconds of animation. I defiantly want to animate fully the moment that the nose falls off and into the soup, I really like this moment in the animation, I got the idea from a horror movie directed by Peter Jackson called Dead Alive. There is a scene in that movie where an undead woman is sitting at a dinner table and her ear falls into her soup before she eats it!
Collaboration
This week we had a briefing for our new project that will involve working in a team to create an animation. During this unit we will be doing all of the pre-production work before making the film in our next unit. This is a project I’m greatly looking forward to, it’ll be a chance to make something really unique and creative. It’s also a great chance to showcase specialities, and I’m pleased that we are able to pick our own group, we can decide of the kind of thing we want to make and want to do and then find others who will work well with our individual skill set! For this project Chloe and I have decided to work together, we’ve worked together on a project before and found that we work well together and have similar art styles so our it’ll be easier for us to merge elements that we make together into the animation so that the animation is seamless/doesn’t look like a jumbled mess of two different styles. We have a rough idea for what we want to do, we want to showcase a strange and bizarre world filled with unique creatures, and the there will be a young character that explores it. We’ve sketch out some initial rough ideas and are taking inspiration from the world of Adventure time. Over the course of my time at university i’ve found that creating characters is my strong suit, especially creatures, so this project will be perfect. We have a rough idea of what roles we’ll take, with Chloe directing and writing the story and me doing the designs, primarily of the monsters that inhabit the world.

Week 4
Personal showcase
This week we worked on sound design for our animation, since the characters don’t talk to each other I don’t have to worry about dialogue but I may want to add in awkward coughs and breathing to the beginning of the date. There will be background noise for the restaurant, with people chatting and a quite violin playing. I need to get sound effects for things such as the nose falling into the soup.

Week 3
Personal showcase
This week I’ve been making my animatic, I’ve changed the beginning of my animation slightly as well. Originally the female monster is shown in the beginning while she’s getting ready, however I decide that a much better impact would be to show the monster’s appearance later on when she finally takes off her mask. The animatic is going well so far, I think things are going smother now that I have a clearer message to the story. I still am unsure of how I want to end the animation. In terms of length I’m aiming to keep it in the 35 second slot, the story is quite simple so this shouldn’t be too difficult to contain within that time.
