Star vs. the Game: 2D and 3D at once
One of the more interesting and experimental gameplay features of Star vs. the Game is how the game will switch between 2D and 3D spaces. I’d say the levels are split around half and half and are mixed among each other; for example after running through a large park in 3D, you may find yourself in a trap-filled As Seen on TV Store in 2D!
Developing like this came with an interesting dilemma; obviously the game can’t be played the same way in both 3D and 2D, so how do we keep the game focused and interesting in both dimensions while at the same time making them feel like they’re still the same game? After some trial and error (And an entire stage painfully scrapped), I eventually found how to play to 3D’s strengths, which centered around freedom and cool environments, and 2D’s strengths, which centered around fast and mechanic based action. Here’s a clip to show what I mean:
Looks pretty cool, right?
Finding the way that makes the game the most fun to play is a difficult process involving a lot of testing and ideas being tried and tossed out, which is one of the reasons it’s taken so long to develop this game. So, thanks for everyone’s patience :)
Finally, I wanted to show off a video of a stage that uses this 2D and 3D gameplay style in an interesting new way. I’ve posted a video of this level a while ago, but it’s received a pretty massive face lift since then so why not?
That’s all for today’s update!

Marco, are you about to leave Jackie to toast in the sun? What about her skin? Her vulnerable, freckled skin?
