Songcraft Showcase Roots Music Project Boulder, CO

This project is funded in part by a grant from the Boulder Arts Commission, an agency of the Boulder City Council.

Songcraft:

Songwriters are the architects of sonic emotion, crafting universes in three-minute masterpieces. They wield metaphors like paintbrushes, infuse stories with heartbeats, and turn silence into a canvas of resonance. In the grand amphitheater of musical creation, songwriters stand as the virtuoso architects, building bridges between hearts and harmonies, reminding us that life's cadence is most vividly felt when painted with the ink of their genius. With the Songcraft Series, Christopher Morse and Ian Steele will bring local songwriters to Roots Music Project to share their craft and stories.

This month features:

Oliver Franklin:

Oliver Franklin began his professional career in Seattle as a core member of indie folk rock act the Senate and the absurdist prog rock collective Discs of Fury. Both acts foreshadowed his wide range and his penchant for strong songcraft, intense stage presence and a wide aest. Franklin has toured extensively along the west coast and played as a sideman and session player for a wide variety of acts in the Pacific Northwest. As a solo artist he has recorded one EP and two full length albums, most recently 2023’s ‘The Guest House’. This album features lush, synthesizer-driven arrangements that highlight his evocative songcraft in a new way that contrasts with the minimalist gothic folk rock of 2016’s ‘The Last Man’. Both records share in being defined by Franklin’s lyrical craft and grit. Having taken a hiatus from the music business for a while and relocated to Colorado, Franklin is eager to bring his songs to the front range and make new connections in this rich and vibrant arts scene.

Heatherlyn:

Inspired by the irresistible way music can connect and carry us, Heatherlyn has built an international community around songs, poetry, and gatherings designed to pull listeners deeper into their own stories and the stories of others. Her passion for philosophy, spirituality, and the beautiful complexity of the human spirit is present in everything she creates, resonant in the echoes of the soul, rock, and roots influences that weave through her eclectic sound. Whether she is curating sacred space through music at HeatherlynMusic.com; on the road in partnership with patrons; yoga, spiritual, and faith communities; or social justice organizations around the world, her motivation rests in the firmly held belief that love is a powerful force of hope and healing, and that music is a uniquely powerful expression of love.

Abby Brown:

Abby found her true calling in music at a young age and never wavered from pursuing her dream even at an age when she could barely fit her fingers around a six-string. After the critically-acclaimed success of her debut EP “Gypsy Soul”, Brown released her second EP, “Heart on Fire”. Both records are on the Quality Records label, which signed Abby in 2016 without hesitation when an A&R rep for the label first heard her perform. As the eldest of seven in a close-knit, blended family, Abby pulls from her diverse background living in half a dozen cities around the U.S. and her time on the road as a musician. Her first live gigs started at the age of seven in her then hometown of Cohasset, MA, where she soon rose to prominence at the local level with her two sisters in a band that would eventually become known as Flatiron Junction. The sister trio has since performed around the country, and most notably, the National Anthem at Boston's legendary Fenway Park and at Coors Field for the Colorado Rockies. Abby has been gracefully inspired by musical icons like Emmy Lou Harris, Alison Krauss, The Chicks, Sheryl Crow, Taylor Swift and other prominent influences like Stevie Nicks and Bonnie Raitt.

Hannah Samano:

Hannah Samano is a multintrumentalist singer-songwriter, inspired by the ever changing nature of the world around and within.Her acoustic finger style guitar riffs and folky blues tonality lean into her Michigan roots, with songwriting themes of the duality of personal growth, and encouragement along the path for her fellow squishy humans.

Flamy Grant is a shame-slaying, hip-swaying, singing-songwriting #dragqueen from the Bible Belt. Her 2022 debut album, Bible Belt Baby, was nominated for Best Pop Album at the San Diego Music Awards, and she is a finalist in the 2023 Kerville Folk Festival New Folk Competition. As a #musician #comedian and #writer Flamy has entertained audiences on both coasts with a mix of concerts, stand-up, and her one-woman show, Godless Sheathen.

Flamy’s iconic roots-rock sound is influenced by gospel and Americana. Her music and drag shine a spotlight on the queer spiritual journey, telling stories of resilience and recovery from religious trauma. With a bold lip, a big lash, and a blistering voice, Flamy is here to rewrite the rules when it comes to faith-based entertainment, demanding a reckoning for an industry that for too long has silenced and shut out its LGBTQ+ artists and fans.

Sangha Fest celebrates health & wellness, conscious community, and personal development through yoga, breathwork, music, meditation, movement, art, dance, nature, ceremony, and play. You may arrive on Thursday, July 13 to get settled in and join us for opening ceremony in the evening followed by candlelight yoga. Then start bright and early on Friday with 3 full days of yoga classes, workshops, and music! 

Sangha is the Sanskrit word for “community” or “bringing together”, which is the mission of Sangha Fest: to come together in joyful celebration, sacred ceremony and nourish our body, mind and spirit.

“Some days you realize you’re carrying in your tired arms a freshly broken dream.

And you’ve been stepping on the pieces that fell to the floor, neglecting to take care of your bloody feet, while feverishly trying to drown out unkind voices in your head screaming how unworthy you are of the dream becoming fulfilled anyway.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who experiences this, so please allow me to be a voice that says, hey, let’s pause and sit with this.

As hard as it might be, you can put the other broken pieces down right here.

Let’s soak your feet in a tub of warm sudsy water and lavender drops and see if there are shards stuck in there. If so, I’ll carefully pull them out with tweezers.

It’s okay to say Ouch.

Would you let me put your face in the palms of my hands, look into your welling up eyes, and remind you that you are never even a tiny little bit defined by your broken dreams?

You are not the dreams you had to leave behind. You are not the pieces you put down or the shards clinging to your feet as you walk away.

Take a little time to grieve. Take all the time you need and remember that this outcome has no bearing on your worth because that’s something you can’t really do anything about. That ineffably valuable part of you, dear soul, is intrinsic, inherent, unchanging, unquantifiable, and infinite. ♾

Forever and ever and ever you are loved. You are worthy. You will heal. You will rise and dream again.

Let’s pull up a chair and have some real talk about my 🎶 Music as Medicine with Heatherlyn • 14th Quarantimes LIVE online happening at my Facebook page this Wednesday. 🎶

This will not be a woo-woo spiritually bypassing or "good vibes only" space. This is a space of practicing authentic presence to all that arises within and around us, from the ecstatic to the excruciating, from the confounding to the crucial, from the messy to the mundane and everything in between.

We will breath and remember that it shouldn't be a white person privilege to breath, that all our BIPOC friends and siblings in this human family deserve and should be able to breath easy too.

We will contemplate where we need and desire more living and active loving kindness and compassion (suffering together) in our lives and in our world.

We will lament with the age-old cry of How Long? and then offer our hearts and hands to the very changes we want to see in this world to make it a more beautiful, abundant, joyful, and just place of equitable thriving.
