As soon as his eyes met hers Henley fought the urge to continue gazing into his and quickly looked away. She couldn't allow herself to fall for Danny again, they had been through so much and each time it ended the same: Her upset and leaving him. The girl really didn't want to try for a third especially when a Nathaniel was now involved. She would do anything to keep that smile on his face, even if it meant cutting ties with Danny.

"So what was my dad like?" The small boy asked looking over to the unfamiliar face. "I mean mom has told me lots but only the lovey dovey gross stuff." He said with a shake of the head. Henley let out a small laugh and threw a napkin at him at his comment.

Despite his better judgement, Daniel met Henley’s eyes. He couldn’t believe this. He was actually here, with them, and she wasn’t kicking him to the curb or screaming at him. Maybe she sensed that this made him feel bad enough. If that was what she thought she’d be a hundred percent right. He had so much to tell her-the biggest one being that he still loved her as much as he had six years ago, and the next biggest one being that the Horsemen had disbanded, that he’d left shortly after she had because he couldn’t bear to be without her. But these were all things he couldn’t say with eight kids in the room. So he just kept his mouth shut and followed them all into the dining room. When Nathaniel asked if Danny wanted to sit next to him, Daniel nodded and sat down beside him. He didn’t trust himself to speak.

By the look on his Henley could instantly see how this was effecting Danny. But what did she expect? Did she really think Danny would come here just to prove he didn't care? Or show them how much better he was without her? No the true reason, the one she didn't want to believe, was that he actually wanted to be apart of their life again. She didn't want to believe it because she didn't know if she could let him. Henley had lived to pleased Danny, and now that she had Nathaniel she knew his needs had to come above everyone else's.

"Dining's room this way." She spoke quietly as she motioned them into the direction. "Birthday boy gets first slice you know the rules." Henley instructed to the kids as she began cutting the pizza.

"Hey Daniel you want to sit next to me?" The small boy asked with a smile as he started to stuff his face with the pizza.

"My mom was the assistant to one of the best magicians in the world, did you know that?" Daniel felt like he couldn’t breathe, feeling like his entire throat had completely closed up.Henley’d told him about being a magician’s assistant? The fact that she’d used one of the best magicians in the world made him feel touched and heartbroken at the same time.

He almost didn’t recognize his own voice when he said “Yeah, I know your father. We’re really close, actually."

This was just getting harder and harder for him. This was almost torture. He couldn’t stay, he just couldn’t. But than Nathaniel was asking if he could eat with them, and Henley was saying that if he didn’t mind she didn’t have a problem with it. Though he wanted to run as far away as possible and just completely break down, instead he smiled and nodded. “Sure, I’d love that."

As Nathaniel asked the question she felt her throat close up, and suddenly she didn't know what to say. Henley had never lied to her son, and she didn't want to start now, but how could she tell him Daniel was his father when she didn't even know if he'd be staying around or not. Just as she was about to speak Daniel's voice filled the room and she breathed a sighed of relief. "We use to do magic together. Maybe he'll show you a few tricks." She smiled running her hands through his hair.

"Daniel, isn't that dad's name? Did he know dad?" The small boy asked eagerness filling his tone. "My mom was the assistant to one of the best magicians in the world did you know that? Hey mom can Daniel eat with us?"

"If Daniel doesn't mind, I don't see a problem with it."

At her words, he felt his heart break, and he swallowed hard. His son didn’t even know who he was. Granted, Henley had every right not to tell Nathaniel, because his father was a giant asshole. At least, he probably was in her eyes. But the thought that Nathaniel wanted him made this even more horrible, because he knew Henley wouldn’t want him around his son. He almost turned and left right there, because he didn’t know if he could bear to stay. They were obviously so much better without him. But then she was calling them inside and he couldn’t make a quick enough exit before eight six-year-old kids, one being his son, came running in to sit down at the table. Seeing his son up close just made it hurt that much more, but he willed himself not to do anything that would complicate things.

"Who’s he, Momma?" Nathaniel asked, looking up at Henley as he gestured to Daniel. He had his eyes. Why is the Earth torturing me like this? He thought to himself as he smiled tentatively at the young boy. Soon he had eight sets of eyes on him.

"I’m Daniel, an old friend of your mother’s."

Henley watched as Daniel took sight of the small boy. "He doesn't know." She admitted looking back out to her son. "Doesn't know that you're his father, doesn't know what you look like, only the stories I told him. I didn't want to get his hopes up that some day you'd come back. You're more of a concept if anything to him, but he wants a father more than he lets on. You know I got him sleeping in front of the window this morning, and when I asked him why he did that you know what he said?" She asked looking over to him but didn't wait for him to answer. "He said because I wanted to see dad, and maybe if he saw me he'd want to stay." Picking up the food from where she set it down she put on a smile and made her way out back. "Food's ready!" She announced before setting it on the table.

Daniel knew coming here was a mistake. And yet, strangely, he couldn’t bring himself to turn and walk out. He’d already proved that he wanted to be in her life once. Why couldn’t he do it again? But her comment about him not thinking about anyone but himself hurt. She had no clue what he’d been through, who he’d looked after. Growing up, he’d never once thought about himself. He always put his mom first. After all the crap he’d been through, he deserved to be allowed to look out for himself for once.. “Henley…" He sighed, following her. He couldn’t find the words to get past it. Instead, he looked outside at the kids playing and having the time of their lives. It wasn’t hard to spot his son-his and Henley’s son-. Nathaniel was the perfect mix of both of them.

Hearing his words her body gave out a small scoff. "It took me all of an hour to figure out I needed to grow up and start thinking of someone other than myself. But it takes the great J. Daniel Atlas six years?" A bitter laugh left her lips before she shook her head looking out into the backyard to make sure everything was running smoothly. His next words brought butterflies to her stomach which was a feeling she hadn't felt in a long time. She couldn't believe that after all this time Danny still had that unbelievable hold over her. "Don't, Daniel. Just don't." Making her way back into the kitchen she took the pizza's out of the oven and set them down.

Daniel hadn’t been expecting her to answer the door, and if she did he’d been expecting her to slam it in his face as soon as she saw him. Instead, she took the present from him and invited him inside, smiling in a way that made his entire body ache. All he wanted to do was hold her, but he didn’t know if she’d allow it, so he just kept his distance. He shook his head. “No, thanks. And, in answer to your question, I thought I’d actually make an appearance this time." Every year before this point, he;d been too scared to knock on the door and see her, so he’d just left a present, rang the doorbell and left. His heart was beating a mile a minute, and he was certain he hadn’t been this nervous in a long time. “You look really good, Hen." He murmured shyly.

"What are you doing here?" Out of all the things she could have thought to say that was the only thing she could manage out. In truth Henley just wanted to hold him, and make sure she wasn't dreaming. She hadn't seen him in so long that he was almost unreal. Looking down at his present she let a small smile come to her lips and help the door open wider. "I um just, come in come in." She gestured to the house closing the door once he was inside. "Do you want anything?" Taking the gift from his hands she moved over to the table which held the rest of them.

Daniel was so upset when Henley took their son and left. Part of him knew he probably should’ve gone with her, but he also knew that would’ve meant giving up magic. He couldn’t give up magic. Maybe that was selfish of him, but without it, he wouldn’t have survived as long as he had. But, she wasn’t wrong. It was best for their little boy. that didn’t mean it hurt any less, however, and he missed her every day. Today just so happened to be his son’s sixth birthday, and he’d be damned if he missed it. So here he was, on Henley’s doorstep. He hadn’t been expecting her to answer the door, but she did. Daniel pulled the present he’d brought out from behind him back, which he hadn’t conjured up with magic. “Hi, Henley."

"Be careful, Nathaniel!" Henley called out to her little boy as he ran outside to join his friends in the festivities that was his sixth birthday party. Things had turned out alright for the strawberry blonde after leaving the four horsemen. It was one of the hardest things she had to do, but she knew it was best for her son. She just wished Daniel saw it that way too, but unfortunately he didn't, and the two split. Hearing a knock on her door she took the apron from her body and made her way over to it. Expecting to see more of Nathan's friends she grabbed a few party hats before opening the door, but wasn't expecting the boy she had left behind six years ago. "Daniel.."

"Correction I'm the only girl smart enough to put up with it. I know you don't mean it, it's kind of like a defense mechanism like me when I feel someone is getting too close. I'll shut down, change subjects, start up with the witty remarks so on and so forth. Until I met you. I knew you were special from the moment I saw your first show outside that college. I remember watching you and all I could think was my oh my he is beautiful. And then I got to know you better and couldn't stand you, but that was only because I had fallen so quickly for you." Everything she was saying had been the truth. From the very beginning Henley felt a certain draw towards him unlike anything she had ever felt before.

Daniel smiled sweetly. He wasn’t used to being called sweet or funny. And coming from anybody else, he probably would’ve just smiled. But, when it was coming from her, it meant the world. “You managed to steal me up because you’re the only girl who loves me enough to put up with me. because I’m also a ridiculous control freak, arrogant, the list goes on." Daniel looked down at her. As self-centered as he was, he knew he had his flaws-who didn’t? And she cared enough to put up with him despite them, to look deeper and realize that there was more to him than his stage persona.

"How did I get so lucky as to snag you up. You truly are the most amazing man I've ever met. Charismatic, insightful, honest, sweet, funny when you want to be, and you are definitely very clever. You're the total package and as soon as I figure out how I managed to steal you up I'll let you know." She spoke her voice barely above a whisper as she looked up the one person she'll always love. There was so much more to J. Daniel Atlas, and she was just glad she would be around to see it.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her, placing his chin lightly on top of her head. “I love you just as much." He almost said more, but he felt if he did that would lead to an argument. Daniel had no idea why he’d been so scared to admit this to her. Now that he had, he felt liberated. He played with her hair as he held her in his arms. Henley was the one for him, he knew that now. There would never be another. And it only took her walking out of his life, and him spending time with her again and almost losing her to realize that.
