Houdini Growth from Peter Sanitra on Vimeo.
Short making of Eucalyptus and Primrose growth setups for HydraSense commercial. Done in SideFX Houdini, rendered with V-Ray for Houdini.
Whole setup was driven by splines and animating age attribute over the spline length in time. Change in age, propagated downstream, controlled everything. Widths, lengths, branching, leafs unrolling, flowers opening, emitting flying stuff, even physical properties like stiffness and damping. With age, flowers and leafs were getting heavier, bending more, flexing more, shaders being mixed etc. With procedural power of Houdini, making it grow on text was as easy as selecting different spline in the first node.

Zombies Vs Houdini - RnD from Graham Matthew Collier on Vimeo.
Houdini RnD using Finite Elements for Zombie Gunship Survival Trailer:
vimeo.com/219528537
I used a custom glue attribute and custom input velocities to drive the Houdini simulations. I wedged the simulation attributes to generate 100s of variations. This generated simulations all the way from small impacts to large soup like destruction.
Check out the case study and Behind the Scenes video:

REALTIME I War of the Worlds I VFX Breakdown from REALTIME on Vimeo.
We were delighted to be lead VFX Vendor on the BBC’s forthcoming 3 x 1 hour adaption of the H.G.Wells classic Sci-fi novel. The series was the first UK TV adaptation of the story and the first to be set in the Edwardian period. We designed the iconic Tripod spaceships, the opening invasion sequence and the Martian creatures that terrorise earth’s inhabitants.

Chocolate from Josh Clos on Vimeo.
I joined forces with Cristina Barna on an exploration of chocolate. Cristina developed the initial concept and styleframes, then I created the 3D renders based on those frames and passed my renders back to Cristina to bring it all together in compositing.
The 3D was done entirely in Houdini using mainly Arnold renderer with a few passes coming from Redshift. The chocolate slow motion pour scene was the most challenging. I have a lot of experience with small scale liquid simulation but not much in slow motion. Slow motion meshes are unforgiving and don't leave room to hide mesh flickering, popping, or imperfections. To top it off, liquid chocolate is of course very reflective which reveals surface detail issues. At one point, I even tried to simulate using vellum cloth since the layering chocolate seemed somewhat cloth-like but that was an act of desperation.
The chocolate is a FLIP simulation with variable viscosity that increases over time. The logic being that liquid chocolate would be heated and gain viscosity while losing temperature as it's poured out. My main goal with the simulation was to replicate the stacking "ribbons" of chocolate folding over each other which was difficult to maintain with heavy smoothing. The final mesh is the result of an elaborate combination of VDB mesh operations including varying levels of overall smoothing based on different areas of the volume and other attributes. I used several steps of analysis to isolate areas of the mesh based on curvature and position in order to produce high smoothing on the outer folds of chocolate, while maintaining as much detail on the sides as possible.

Houdini Tutorial - Vellum booty shake from Tim van Helsdingen on Vimeo.
I've left vimeo! Check it out here instead: youtu.be/QOmFatk7Mc8
A friend asked about doing something like this in Houdini. I had a quick go at it for fun personal r&d and then I decided it would make for a good tutorial as well, so here it is!
Like I did last time, free base tutorial but extended tutorial + project files (including model!) on patreon.
If you don't want to support on patreon you can alternatively get the model here, or use your own models: cgtrader.com/3d-models/character/woman/middle-poly-female-basemesh-2

Cool things to do with Houdini ocean spectrum from eric ebling on Vimeo.
Started playing around with the Ocean spectrum in Houdini. You can do some pretty cool things with the @N attribute on points. You can also set per point attributes and allow editing of the ocean spectrum node and then adjust the @amplitude and other values on a per point basis to get more control over your ocean by dropping a wrangle node before the final OUT node inside of the spectrum.
