Uma Shankar sharma/Getty Images The discovery of omicron — the new variant of coronavirus with a high number of concerning mutations — has kicked off a frenzy of research. Scientists are racing to figure out how transmissible this variant is and how resistant to vaccines. They're also grappling with a mystery: How did omicron get created? NPR spoke with two scientists in the thick of this research. Trevor Bedford is a computational virologist and professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Richard Lessells is an infectious disease specialist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, and part of the team that identified omicron in South Africa and alerted the world. Here's what they have to say. Omicron's genetic family tree contains a big surprise One of the key tools that scientists use to puzzle out the origin of a particular coronavirus variant is to look at its genetic code. Just as a person who wants to find out their ancestry — were their forebears Nordic? Mongol? — can find traces of that lineage in their genes, the virus's genome contains clues. Article continues after sponsor message "It's been very common to use an evolutionary tree — or a family tree — of these SARS-CoV-2 viruses to catch introductions in places like Australia and Taiwan that have not had a lot of local spread," says Bedford. "You can figure out where the importations are coming from by looking at the viral genome and checking, 'Is it close in its sequence characteristics to [strains] that are circulating elsewhere that have been sequenced and shared with the database?' " Scientists can then see, as they continue to take samples in the new region over time, how each particular strain starts to pick up additional — often benign — mutations step-by-step until it morphs into a significantly different strain. But Bedford says that when you look at the family tree for this omicron variant there's something surprising: "With omicron, your closest sequences are back from mid-2020 — so over a year ago. That is very rare to see." In other words, while scientists can tell that this variant evolved from a strain that was circulating in mid-2020, in the intervening months there's been no trace of all the intermediate versions that scientists would have expected to find as it morphed into its current form. "It doesn't tie into anything that was circulating more recently," says Bedford." Yet its mutations put it a long way from that 2020 strain.

Keen to get back to school and work as soon as they could, the Brierly family boarded their British Airways flight to London Heathrow on Wednesday, despite having no quarantine facility booked for when they reach England. Sarah came up with a solution to avoid wasting further time: Catch a connection from London to Heathrow to France and self-isolate there. But, they're still not sure where they will stay. "We hope and pray we can go to Paris and get a cheap Airbnb to wait out our 10 days, allowing the children to resume some remote learning," Sarah says. France requires vaccinated people coming in from South Africa who are aged 12 or above, to show proof they have been jabbed. The Department of Health and Social Care says it's rapidly expanding hotel quarantine capacity. It has advised passengers who are unable to book to check back regularly or try and book for a different arrival date.

In a long, confessional social media post on Tuesday night, a celebrated Chinese athlete described her alleged assault ten years ago at the hands of one of the country's most powerful Communist Party officials at the time, which she says happened while someone stood guard outside the bedroom door. "I was so scared that afternoon," Peng Shuai wrote in her post on the Chinese social media site Weibo. "I never gave consent, crying the entire time." Peng, 35, is one of the country's most well-known tennis athletes. Now she has also launched one of China's most explosive #MeToo allegations yet against Zhang Gaoli, 75, a retired party official who once occupied the highest rungs of political power in China. It is the first such accusation against a senior Communist Party official. Neither Peng nor Zhang could be reached for comment. In her post, Peng said she had preserved no evidence of her relationship with Zhang or of his alleged assault. There was no official comment on the matter. "I have not heard of this issue, and it is not a diplomatic question," said a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry during a press briefing Wednesday. Peng's social media post was quickly deleted by government censors. Her social media account disappeared hours after her post. China's state media outlets have not mentioned her accusations at all. Screenshots of Peng's original post continued to circulate widely on the Chinese internet even as censors scrambled to delete any references to her allegations within group chats and blogs, a sign of the immense public interest in her allegations.
