[INTERVIEW TRANSLATION] Hyoyeon in Grazia (May 2019)

Hyoyeon discusses her goals as DJ Hyo, her latest fashion favourites and her trip with Grazia to Hawaii.

The most important thing when traveling is not the weather of the destination, nor the famous local eateries, but the people you’re with and there are celebrities who occasionally make you personally feel that. A person who has a smile that’s more refreshing than the ocean and has a trustworthy gaze that is always confident; a person who makes you anticipate the heart-fluttering trip alongside you. Hyoyeon is like that. She recently released ‘Punk Right Now’ and is showing off her DJing at global festivals; she is a cool artist who continues to work toward her goals. Short and sweet 4-day trip to Hawaii with her, who sparkles more than the golden sand.

Q: You recently released ‘Punk Right Now’ and you are performing internationally as DJ ‘Hyo’. It must feel different from touring as SNSD.

Hyoyeon: No matter what activity I do, whenever I stand on stage, my heart flutters and it’s exciting. As SNSD, as a solo artist, as a DJ – all of it. The only thing is, I still often get nervous as DJ Hyo (laughs). Still, it puts me in a good mood to show off a set I prepared before listeners and to see immediate reactions on site every time I perform.

Q: DJ Hyo that Hyoyeon has created must have definite differences from existing DJs, as you can express music through performance, fashion and visuals, beyond just DJing. The public could also be more receptive to the domain of DJs (through you).

Hyoyeon: It’s not that intention is ‘My DJing is different from others! It’s special!’. But I do think it’s necessary to have differences. In the music sets that I create, I do put care into showing unique styling. The experience of having put myself in a specific field for a long time does definitely help when expanding into other fields. For me, the many experiences I’ve had in performance is like that. There is so much that I’ve built up inside of myself all this time and I need to use it well! I think I would be very happy if the public is more receptive to the career of a DJ and DJing through me. I hope it will become like that.

Q: Through the group ‘SNSD’, you’ve achieved all of the best glories that you can reach as an idol. Are you achieving all of the milestones that you want to achieve as Hyoyeon?

Hyoyeon: I think there are steps to achieving the goals. There are so many small and big festivals around the world. My goal is to stand on diverse festival stages all over the world. Should I call it ‘Travel Around the World via Festivals’ (laughs)? It feels very grand but SNSD continuously achieved difficult to believe records so I’m trying it. My dreams and goals are to stand on the stage at EDC in Las Vegas, UMF in Miami and Tomorrow Land in Belgium.

Q: The most surprising part of interviewing Hyoyeon was that. If goals are really big, isn’t it difficult to tell others? There are moments when you get timid because think you might not be able to achieve it, or that it’s an unattainable goal that others might scoff at. We don’t see any hesitation with Hyoyeon.

Hyoyeon: It must be because I get more excited than afraid by new challenges personality-wise. But that’s not to say that I’ve achieved every goal that I’ve ever set out. It would be nice to do everything well but that’s definitely not the case. But I also don’t consider things that I haven’t achieved as ‘failures’. I struggle alone to do better, I worry and occasionally, I have sleepless nights to try hard and create and I enjoy that. I try to find the joy in the process, rather than the result. If I do well, I’m very self satisfied (laughs).

Q: Despite that, do you still get discouraged when things don’t go as well as you anticipated?

Hyoyeon: Of course. When I practice well and I’ve prepared everything but still make mistakes! If I’ve made a mistake on stage, I put on the music loudly in the practice room and practice until I feel better. When I become a bit dispirited, I meet up with friends to have conversations or I drive alone to organize my thoughts.

Q: We are very curious about your everyday style, not just your style on stage. Are there any items or styles that you’re into these days?

Hyoyeon: Athleisure look and conversely, French chic look. I like pairing active and comfortable athleisure looks with ring earrings or pairing feminine French chic looks with ugly shoes, with the styling point being as if you’re kidding around. Items I’m into recently are legging. I’m really addicted to legging. It’s so comfortable that I can’t let it go easily (laughs).

Q: As you get older and your environment changes, your tastes change too. Despite that, are there any absolute personal tastes that has not changed even if time passes?

Hyoyeon: Flashy things. I think my fans would have known that I would respond to this question like this. I really like ‘flashy things’.

Q: How are the clothes that you wore today, with ethnic designs on light and airy material?

Hyoyeon: When SNSD promoted ‘Party’, I wore this style a lot. It’s very cute yet feminine. It makes me think that even I had such innocent feeling in me (laughs). But as expected, isn’t athleisure look the Hyoyeon style that everyone knows?

Q: How was Hawaii? Since you’re always smiling and in a good mood, it is okay to think that it was a very good trip?

Hyoyeon: These few days, I felt with my whole body that even just seeing a clear sky puts me in such a good mood. Endless and vast ocean view too. I think the inspiration that I receive from nature is very important. Yesterday, I laid on the beach and stared still at the sky and unknowingly, I was humming a song without a name. I wondered if I was too excited and I raised my head with an embarrassed heart but the beach was so beautiful. It made me think that this is happiness. I enjoyed freedom and relaxation that I can’t explain with words. I really enjoyed wandering exotic streets.

Q: Now that we’ve returned to Korea, it has become spring. What will Hyoyeon’s spring be filled with this year?

Hyoyeon: This spring, I’m planning to continue the Asia tour. Not only the performances but I personally want to eat the unusual foods of the countries I’ll visit and I want to discover that country’s ambiance and culture. I’m sure I’ll miss Korea’s delivery foods, especially kimchi stew! You know what I mean, right

Best ever unit group has been created. The second collaboration group of SM and JYP, ‘Triple T’. ‘GIRLS' GENERATION’ Hyoyeon, ‘miss A’ Min and ‘2AM’ Jo Kwon gathered. “We have been best friends for 10 years I feel excited about working with friends and feeling amazed. It's too bad that we have only short time to work together." (Hyoyeon) The title track ‘Born to be Wild’ is the song that Park Jin-young produced. The song is Southern United States’ hip hop style and it gives an image of pleasant party. ‘Dispatch’ met ‘Triple T’ at KBS Music Bank waiting room on August 26. ‘Starcast’ is going to reveal their special collaboration exclusively.

Look at that haughty face. The best players in ‘rollick’ field gathered. The ‘force of rollick’ to overwhelm the camera. While they are in different groups, there is no sense of difference between them at all.

I will first introduce ‘Triple T’. First letter ‘T’ represents three artists. Second ‘T’ means trouble. Last ‘T’ is for treat.

“Originally, our group’s name was ‘HYO MIN GWON. But it seems the name was created in a hurry? At that time, producer Park Jin Young suggested ‘Triple T’ Agreed, unanimously.” (Min)

Firstly, it’s Hyoyeon. She is in charge of dance at ‘GIRLS' GENERATION’. At ‘Triple T’ she is a girl crush shooter. Her costumes are shocking. Hot pants? It’s hot. "We understand each other very well. In a word, we are besties. Our favorite dances and gag are similar. It was just we were in the groups with different colors.” (Hyoyeon)

Min of ‘miss A’ was also in charge of girl crush, too. Her improved appearance captured attention. She even fits well with blonde hair. “I visited SM building first time while working for this project. It was so amazing. I practiced by looking at the sky-blue wallpaper at the waiting room. It was an exciting experience. " (Min)

This is Jo Kwon of the ony man in ‘Triple T. This man is the originator of rollickers. He is playing the leading role between Hyoyeon and Min. ♬ I was just born like this. “Honestly, I was worried when I heard producer Park Jin-young was to make group with three of us. What contents would come out... By the way, as we were in great harmony...., I could work happily.” (Jo Kwon)

This scene is something you cannot see every day. Hyoyeon was sitting on the chair and Min was holding the brush. Even while they are putting makeup on, they did not give up excitement.

☞ You want to know more about Triple T, right? I tried to interview them for a while. Of course, I couldn’t stop their ‘excitement’. But when talking about music, they are most serious.

Q. Please talk about the first stage of ‘Born to be Wild’. Hyoyeon: ‘M!countdown’ was our first stage. I was so nervous as I went up on the stage. Overall, I think there was a lack of energy.Min: That's right. Since it was our debut(?) stage, we were nervous. So we have remedied that problem. We just burst our energy.

Q. Did you feel ‘This is it’ for your song? Jo Kwon: For Hyoyeon, it is her first time to sing JYP style song. It was funny. Hyo-Yeon, were you not surprised?

Hyoyeon: I wasn’t surprised at all. In fact, when we go to Karahoke with my members, we always sing the songs of ‘Wonder Girls’ or ‘miss A’.

Q. I want to know what the recording studio was like. Hyoyeon: I went there after watching ‘Sister's Slam Dunk’. I saw that producer Park Jin-young scolded Hong Jin-kyung a lot. I went there after emptying my mind.

Jo Kwon: Hyoyeon was in charge of first recording. But she finished too soon. She even received praise. Then the next person is more nervous. Luckily we finished well without making a mistake also.

Q. I heard that you guys have put a lot of efforts for dance. Hyoyeon: You know that refrain part catches our ears, right? If the choreography is good, it catches listeners’ ears more. We’ve worried about choreography a lot with producer Park Jin-young.Min: We sat down and were listening to the song together. We listened to the song infinitely. Nevertheless, we did not think of choreography. We just went back for some times.

Jo Kwon: It was even in the SM’s practice room. Haha.

Hyoyeon: Min and Kwon asked for advice from foreign choreographers. Also we discussed with J-black and SM dancers. This kind of process, isn’t it so fun?

Jo Kwon: The dance is very unique. There is no one who can dance this except us.

Hyoyeon: If you dance wrong, you’ll look like a fool.

Q. What did other members say? Hyoyeon: As three of us have same characteristics, they were worried. But they also had anticipation. They knew that three of us are harmonized well. They said it will be fun.

Jo Kwon: Many people said “A group activities for you three?”. They said that there was no disharmony after watching our first stage. We really look like a group worked together for long time

Q. By the way, you guys really look like a group existed before. Jo Kwon: Yes, there are no group with mixed gender like us.

Min: I feel sad as we only work for one week.

Hyoyeon: You will be sick of us if we work longer. Haha. It’s better to just show once intensely.

Jo Kwon: Isn’t there a possibility for a new album? I want to receive a song from SM at that time.

Q: Finally, what do you want to say to your fans?

▶Cleansing: The most important step that Hyoyeon considers is 'cleansing'. Hyoyeon recommended ‘cleansing water’ instead of ‘cleansing oil’.

"I felt like cleansed better if I use oil, but it arise trouble on the skin sometimes. Cleanse with cleansing water even if it takes more time. Then wash your face about twice."

▶ Hair: You cannot miss out hair. Hyoyeon dyed her hair blonde before ‘Party’ comeback. What would be the secret of maintaining the silky hair despite of frequent dyeing?

"I do hair-pack. Put it on the head generously, and shower while having a hair-cap. I assure it really works. Isn’t my hair silky nevertheless I dyed my hair a lot?"

We want to know about green color point also. Hyoyeon says: "I’ve done green color with hair manicure. If you dye it, the color comes out straight away. The positive point while negative also of hair manicure is that color doesn’t come out. The color looks so nice, isn’t it?"

▶ Diet: Hyoyeon has skinny and athletic figure at the same time. It’s wanna-be figure of girls. We also asked her the secret of it. "I try hard to maintain it consistently. I must do stretching for 3 mins in the morning and 10 mins in the evening. When I do GIRLS' GENERATION activity, I always dance ‘Party’ before I go to bed. It’s good because I can monitor myself and lose weight at the same time."

"The most important thing is trying out whatever it is. Don’t ever make a prejudice against yourself. You can find your own style from unexpected place. Let’s be prettier everybody~"

Q: At the end of this October you made a performance stage with Girls Generation's Hyoyeon as a part of a project, how was it?

A: I can really express it on words. 'As expexted, Hyoyeon!'. I know that Hyoyeon likes to dance and has a good performance but she really dances very well. I made the choreograph of the part we danced together, despite of lack practicing together, Hyoyeon could follow the dance moves in short time and could pull it off really good, that was why we made a great performance. Please don't call her Hyoyeon (it means her stage name, not origin name) again.

Yes. The one who appears in front of us is the member of Legend Group, Girls' Generation - Kim Hyoyeon. She debuted since young with more than 10 years stage experiences. It makes Hyoyeon and her members climbed to the peak of career and brought Kpop's influence to the whole world.

Stepping into 30 years old, Hyoyeon kept challenging herself, became DJ HYO, adding a new identity out of Girls Generation member, to explore the possibilities her music and career.

30 years old indicates the experience and perception of life, To Kim Hyoyeon, it is also the prime time for pursuing her dream.

Recalling that when she joined SM Entertainment as a trainee, then officially debut and got all the applause and popularity along the way. Currently, DJ HYO wants to retrieve her original intention.

"Since the days being a trainee, I have been learning dance and exposed to a wide range of music genres and I was deeply impressed by how the DJs focus in that. At that time I already thought they are so cool and I also hoped that I will have a chance to try. However, I always felt being a DJ was an unreachable dream, so I could only tell myself to learn DJ-ing in future. By happenstance, I can finally try to be a DJ and pursue my dream. "

(CAREER) TRANSFORMATION BRING HER SATISFACTION

The career transformation from (SNSD) Hyoyeon to DJ HYO made her leave the comfort zone of many years, she learns to believe in herself as well as being presist in pursuing dreams. For her, it is also an unprecedented challenge.

"Before I develop my solo career, everything was a matter for all members of Girls' Generation. No matter what happened, there were members supporting me so I felt relieved and comfortable. After releasing music as a solo DJ, I feel that my responsibilities and burdens are several times more than before but I need to decide for my own style of music and orientation of future career.

Although it is hard , I still learnt how to develop a stronger sense of self-reliance and I felt satisfied during the time I created my favourite music with putting in all my efforts."

DJ Hyo, who released the solo single "Sober" and "Punk Right Now" last year and have a collaboration with DJ Ummet Ozcan And DJ 3LAU , it aims to establish the her DJ style of Electronics Dance Music (EDM).

"I am not the type of person who always stay in the comfort zone , I wish I can always challenge myself and raise the limit of the sky. Nowadays, DJs will compose their own music and even appears on stage as guest too. I hope to start with Electronic Dance Music (EDM), integrate fashion elements in the performance through DJing and let DJing becomes the bridge of fashion and music. A bright and beautiful stage must need the unique fashion sense and strong personally styles. My styling on stage will be different due to different types of music styles."

UNFORGETTABLE IMPROMPTU PERFORMANCE

Have Debuting as a DJ for a year, DJ Hyo said although she hasn't performed in a large fashion event but she is already well prepared for that. Every time she is performing in SMTOWN, it is a golden chance for her to practice.

"In January of this year, I went to Chile and participated in SMTOWN performance, before the official start of the concert, I temporarily decided to have an impromptu DJing on stage. I felt that I was brave at the time. The fans in South America were enthusiastic so I also have freestyle dancing on stage, it feels very fun. " When it comes to DJing, DJ Hyo is inexplicably excited.

At the end of the interview, she always stressed that 30 years old is actually the beginning of pursuing dreams. "I still have a lot of things to do and many goals have not been reached. I will concentrate on DJ HYO's music this year and I hope everyone can feel my change."

Hyoyeon “DJ Transformation, It’s a Happy Challenge!”

SNSD Hyoyeon (29) has been reborn as a multi artist. Of the SNSD members who’ve greeted ‘Solo Generation’, she’s boasting the most powerful aura with comprehensive activities in her field. Not only as a singer, but she’s also a DJ and a music producer, and she’s also active in variety programs. Hyoyeon, who released the single ‘Sober’ with a stage name of HYO in April, showcased her DJ-ing stage at major clubs in the city of Seoul. She has also been exchanging ideas with music producers and growing her capabilities as a producer. She has also studied significantly. Through her solo record, Hyoyeon received attention as a vocalist with a unique sound and during her time with SNSD, she has already been acknowledged as a ‘dancer’. Frequently through variety programs, she displays her healthy charms. She is a ‘multi girl’. After celebrating her 10th year since debut last year, we met Hyoyeon who is creating a new 10 years.

New DJ Hyo, Music Quality + Girl Crush is Her Weapon!

Q: For individual activities, your group members have become actors or solo singers, but a transformation into a DJ is different. Hyoyeon: I think it was a good decision. There’s a lot of burden but it’s fun. Doing work that’s new that you like is a happy thing. As a DJ, it’s thrilling to get feedback on site.

Q: What was the motivation behind your attempt to become a DJ? Hyoyeon: It started with my interest in dance. When I’d transition from this dance to that dance, I thought, “This type of mixing would be amazing” and I started having interest in DJ-ing. I was curious about mixing so I started touching the machines, and as I heard advice from the experts, I thought that I should start creating music.

Q: Did you already have a competitive edge as a DJ from when you were promoting with SNSD? Hyoyeon: My interest started about 5~6 years ago, during ‘The Boys’ or ‘I Got a Boy’, when SNSD’s music started changing heavily. I started seriously preparing a year ago.

Q: If you were to introduce DJ Hyo’s music style? Hyoyeon: Dubstep and tech house, and I put in hip hop in between that. They’re genres that make your heart thump. The key is if I can lead the audience with this music. Like when you prepare a record, as a DJ, you’re also concerned with ‘should I go with the trend, or do I need to pull the public along with music that I want’. I’ll have to go through trial and error.

Q: Hyoyeon only started her DJ activities 3 months ago. She’s a rookie but she’s planning on promoting her music as a DJ through various online platforms like YouTube going forward.

Hyoywon: “EDM has a lot of big stages. I get asked to DJ at clubs, but I haven’t been accepting the requests at the thought that I need to be perfect. I think it will be possible to officially promote as a DJ around September or October.”

Q: There must be some territorialism as you come from a famous girl group. Hyoyeon: know there will be gazes looking at me with coloured glasses. What’s certain is that if I’m not skilled, I’ll be sifted out. My goal is to become a DJ that will receive acknowledgement.

Q: To be acknowledge for your skills, you’ll need to create your own music. Hyoyeon: That’s why I’m learning music from a producing team. Music has such diverse genres that I don’t think I can listen to all of it in my lifetime, but I wanted to listen to even more music and choose good songs to share with people. Like how you put thought into choosing an outfit, shoes or a bag when you go out, I’m thinking about what kind of set to collect music in to have people listen to them.

Q: Is there anything you’ve worked on or studied with the producer team? Hyoyeon: I have many songs I’ve worked on but I wanted to make note of the feedback from experts and I think it would be good to release songs that are good one by one. I’m learning DJ-ing and I’m also learning composition. It will take a lot of time, but I will take it one step at a time.

Q: As there are more female DJs, there’s a fierce competition over looks. What is DJ Hyo’s competitive edge? Hyoyeon: It must sound like a cliche, but I want to win with music quality. Externally, I want to show a cool appearance, the charm of girl crush.

Q: The public regards Hyoyeon’s outward appearance as being ‘gender neutral image’, but at almost 30 years old, she’s currently showing her peak beauty. After changing her eyebrow shape and dyeing her hair blonde, fans have been saying Hyoyeon’s ‘beauty potential has exploded’.

Hyoyeon: “I think that too. Haha. It was in 2011, when we had our second domestic concert. I had arched eyebrows and my mother suggested a gentler angle and I became blonde. I heard those words after that.”

Q: Amongst fans, there is also an assessment of ‘beauty that appeals in the Western world’. In 2011, at the ‘SMTown Live’ performance in Paris, members said their greetings in order and Hyoyeon receiving the loudest cheers is a direct example of this.

Hyoyeon: “I don’t think it was for my looks, but the loud cheers from the local audience must have been for how much they liked my dance performance.”

Dancer Hyoyeon, Power is My Strength

During SNSD activities, Hyoyeon raised the value of her existence through dance first. She was chosen as a SM Entertainment trainee after being acknowledged for her dancing skills. Even after she became a trainee, she learned jazz dance, popping and locking.

Q: Is there a special reason why you became interested in dance? Hyoyeon: No. My own appearance in the mirror when I danced was pretty. Haha. When I showed interest in dance as an elementary school student, my father allowed me to learn various dances. I tried various dances while doing aerobics for 5 years. I learned that I was skilled in popping and locking, and the more I did it, the more I got pulled into it.

Hyoyeon appeared on a variety program in 2011 and said, “I wondered if I worked so hard at push-ups in order to shake a lollipop (‘Kissing You’ prop)”. It was because the dance style she pursued was contrary to the style that demanded of her as a SNSD member. Hyoyeon reflected, “It was a feeling at the time because it was a style that didn’t match up with what I wanted. I couldn’t do what I wanted and that’s why those words came out”.

“While promoting as a team, I wanted to show my own colours so I often said ‘I want to promote solo’. In a girl group, you need to appear pretty and feminine, and you had to practice the movement of your fingertips (rather than popping or locking) and expressions. The gap between the team’s identity at debut and my style was unfamiliar, but thanks to that, I received acting ability that allowed me to look pretty.”

Fans who knew her passion toward dance have wondered, ‘What if she had debuted at YG Entertainment?’. Hyoyeon said “Truthfully, when we promoted ‘Kissing You’, I thought that for a moment” and laughed.

“At that time, 2NE1 debuted. I imitated their dances and had those thoughts. However, while we promoted ‘The Boys’ and ‘I Got a Boy’ after that, it made me rethink SNSD’s colours. It made me think that my dissatisfaction with our team colour at debut was just my own greed. What’s ironic is that when we look at our debut videos, my appearance was fresh and it suited me well. A person can’t do only things they want to do.”

Hyoyeon’s presence was acknowledged through dance but her charming vocal colour also received attention. Solo songs ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Mystery’ that were released previously as well as the recent song ‘Sober’ are numbers that make you feel the charm of her alto vocal. To the public, that charm started being highlighted through the ‘Goodbye’ stage on KBS 2TV’s ‘Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook’ that aired in March 2014. This became the momentum that caused Hyoyeon to reflect back on her own identity.

“I debuted after 7 years of training but from the beginning, it was difficult to be judged by my own colour. After 4~5 years, I thought that I needed to have my own vocal colour and I had many attempts while recording. After the ‘Goodbye’ stage, I was happy because fans knew my colour and heart, and that became the momentum that made me work even harder to find my colour.”

Q: “Contract Renewal with SM, System Optimized for Me”

Hyoyeon: SNSD members are promoting individually.

We spoke about our individual paths and we’ve been observing one another closely so we knew which direction each person wanted to pursue.

Q: There are members who remain at SM, some who have left. Hyoeyeon: We respect each person’s opinions. Life is lived individually.

Q: What’s the reason you remained at SM? Hyoyeon: It’s because I thought there wasn’t a place better than our company that would support my direction. And loyalty that’s not really loyalty also had an effect. It’s a place I’ve been at since 2000 so there are many staff that I have good chemistry with.

Q: What thoughts do you have when you look at girl groups these days? Hyoyeon: There are so many idols. There are many teams so I am envious seeing them share stories and become friends.

Q: If you had a word of advice for hoobaes? Hyoyeon: You can’t be satisfied with everything. If you do your best at what’s given, there is no regret. Due to the nature of the work, you will receive assessments from a lot of people. Don’t be swayed by that and I hope you will promote with your own sense of purpose.
