From where he stood, unmoved, Rhadamanthys absorbed every word and gesture, all of the defiance and stupidity that moved that girl. How blind one had to be to defy Lord Hades, to even imagine they stood a chance against one of his Judges, to throw their life away just like that.
‘Abandon all hope’, it was said. But she hadn’t set foot in hell yet; even it tainted, claimed by the Underworld, she didn’t know. She was nothing but a stupid child who had no clue what she spoke of.
Long dead – as if she had any idea what that meant. Clinging to memories and the old Manor and daring to go against all of the Underworld. How could she possibly speak of death when she had been spared, against all odds?
Once restrained, Rhadamanthys’ cosmo exploded, a beast finally unleashed. Cetus was strong, granted, but there was no way she could stop the Wyvern from lunging forwards, grabbing her by the shoulders.
All the same, she dared say. All the same.
Tumblr media
“There will be no fight”, he roared angrily, baring his teeth like the animal he could be. “If I raise my hand against you, you are dead. When you defy Lord Hades, your courage means nothing, your strength means nothing, you mean nothing.”
“Yield and live, do you hear me? Live.”
For the little girl he knew she was was not supposed to die like that.
The strength of Alex– no, Rhadamanthys’ cosmo was overwhelming, but Chris didn’t make any motions nor did she give any signs that she intended to surrender. In fact, she didn’t move. Not even a single step back as the other slowly ended with the distance between them. And not because she was paralyzed with fear - no -, it was to give a message. That her point would stand, no matter what. Her will on this matter was unswerving, unable to be persuaded.
Chris kept her head up, no matter how nervous, even if a tad, she still felt inside. She was not a coward anymore. She would not back down.
Her gaze was focused on his as she glanced up at him. Chris’ countenance was as serious as she could manage as she stared into his golden eyes. They were so different from what she could recall, so cold… like frozen amber, and much darker than they used to be. Her hands remained clenched on fists, but they loosened up upon his words.
Tumblr media
Her breath was caught up in the middle of her throat, and her posture changed. Once again tears accumulated on the clear orbs of her eyes and the way she tried to prevent her sobs made her chest burn as she bit down harshly on her lower lip. So he remembered… He knew it was her… And yet…
Chris took a step back, just so she could face him properly.
And yet he underestimated her will.
Her eyes narrowed in affront, her cosmo involved her like a thick veil.
“If it is all the same to you, fight me,” her words trembled as her tears moistened her lips. “Fight me!”
Tumblr media
“Because I will not falter, I will not yield…” Her aqua eyes glimmered with determination as she looked at him without averting her gaze. Chris following words were nothing but an equal murmur.
“… The little girl you think I am is long dead.”
And there was no way of going back.

Years before, in another life, perhaps he would be proud of her. The memories he had were of a far too meek child, one who would never stand up for herself. It was obvious that there was more to her than the awakening of the Evil Star; she had come a long way – even if a most unfortunate one.
That sort of feeling had no place between them now. For all he knew, this was the first time Cetus, a most insubordinate Specter, met a Judge. She would bow, whether willingly or not.
Rhadamanthys’ cosmo expanded aggressively, the threat posed by it in sharp contrast with his blank expression. Slowly, he crossed the distance that separated him from the young woman, eyes never leaving hers, even as his broad figure towered over her. And in silence he stood, an oppressive presence, looking down on her.
She would bow, and Cetus would be retrieved. Still, for the strength she showed, he was willing to spare her life, as long as she cooperated.
Tumblr media
“The man you think I am is long dead”, he finally said, voice so low it was little more than a whisper – but strong nonetheless. “... But you don’t have to die today. Yield, and there will be no bloodshed.”
In another life, keeping her safe was his duty – a duty that died with that family. Still, he would rather honor it.
Chris had shut her eyes, not being bothered by the tears that proceeded to run across her cheeks. Her fingers closed more harshly against her palm, leaving red marks of her fingertips. She thought she was well prepared for it, but how could she…
‘Cetus’
Tumblr media
… When he didn’t even recognize her?
“You… You don’t remember me,” it wasn’t a question, and her voice was nothing but a low whimper. “Alex…”
Chris raised her arm, wiping her tears with the back of her hand and the tip of her fingers. Her chest and eyes burnt a little whilst the rest of her body quivered in anxiety. Rhadamanthys… Was that the name he was given in the Underworld?
How did they dare… to transform him in this person? How did he allow this to happen? She couldn’t understand, it made her frustrated. It angered her.
Why?
But she owed him an answer.
“I… I’m sorry.” Chris raised her gaze, looking at him from across the hall. She shook her head lightly; her palms hurt from the strength she added to clench her fists. “But I’ll not give it to you. I have reasons to keep it, and I do not care who they belong to for Cetus answers to me.” Her snow white eyebrows furrowed above her aqua eyes. Chris’ posture changed, no matter how her following words would shatter her heart upon being voiced.
“If you want it,” she said without faltering.
Tumblr media
“You will have to kill me to get it.”

Chris Walden.
It was true, then – not that for a moment he doubted the words of his Commander, but still. Only as Rhadamanthys finally faced the alleged rogue Specter was that her identity stopped being merely an idea, an unlikely concept. She was real. Much older than she was the last time they met, of course – distant memories from another lifetime, that did not belong to him anymore –, and yet the resemblance to whom she once was was uncanny.
And even if she did not look so much like the the little girl he used to know, the clear recognition in her eyes would be enough.
This scene had to come to an end. Soon.
“Cetus”, he started, the low rumble of his voice somewhat retained; no anger, no threat, no nothing. “The Surplice that was granted to you belongs to Lord Hades. And I, Wyvern Rhadamanthys, am here to ensure it returns to its proper place. With or without you.”
Tumblr media
Wipe your tears. They won’t help you anymore.
There was never a previous warning, was there? Chris could feel it, sense an eerie, powerful cosmo approaching. It was different from the minor Specters she had dealt with, it resembled… Pandora’s. But it was not hers, she knew that much. Her words ringed in Chris’ ears, repeating themselves in her mind.
‘I shall not be the one to drag you down, however. I am sure he misses you so.’
Chris’ stomach started to churn, her skin would grow cold with anxiety. It’d remind her of moments of her childhood, when she believed in monsters underneath her bed. The feeling was the same; the ghosts of her past, a family member who’d been presumed dead but was part of Hades’ army… that was far scarier than horror stories she used to hear as a child.
Aspros wasn’t present to assist her now, albeit they had been sharing the manor for the time being, till all this would at last be solved - even if there was no viable solution in her eyes. She would need to face him alone, whoever he was. It was always meant to be this way. So be it.
A gasp left her lips when she heard the front door opening from downstairs, and a shiver ran down her spine. Chris’ limbs trembled lightly with the weight of her overwhelming emotions. Yet, there was no time to be a coward. She wouldn’t hide. She had been… waiting for this.
Chris descended the staircase with no sign of hesitation in her steps. Her fingertips were pressed onto her palm as she tried to conceal and control her apparent uneasiness. At the sight before her, however, said attempt proved to be useless.
When her aqua eyes fell on the figure before her, the one covered with black armor, her muscles faltered for a moment. It wasn’t her brother, after all, but…
It did not make the situation any better, no…
It couldn’t be.
Tumblr media
Tears accumulated in her widened eyes as she stared at him in pure disbelief; all the remembrances she could recall with him pierced her like knives.
‘Alexander…’

Even though he had his own troops to command, Rhadamanthys could not help being partial to missions such as this. Find the target, do whatever is required of him, report; no need to bring any of his men along, no complications. Just a clean, simple job.
(Except it was anything but that.)
For one who walked and ruled over the land of the dead, taking those steps should have been easier. And yet there he was, standing at an all too familiar threshold, cursing himself under his breath for that inexcusable hesitation. For a split second, he pondered on how proper it was, the irony of such location for a reunion – only a split second, though. For there was no reunion, nor room for thoughts of that nature.
One step at a time, he reached the porch, and the front door offered no resistance. She was there, the rogue Specter whose Surplice he should retrieve; he could feel her. It was a matter of time only. One precise strike, and it would be over.
Tumblr media
It was nothing.

That he did not expect. A Saint guarding a rogue Specter; how such arrangement came to be, he could not even begin to imagine. There was no point in speculating, though, not when his mission was absolutely clear: retrieve the Surplice, eliminate the Saint if so needed – or if opportunity presented itself, he would rather think. The sooner they got rid of Athena’s army, the better.
It was the sound of Lady Pandora’s heels clicking against the floor that caught his attention again, drawing his gaze towards her. In silence, he observed as she passed by, the touch of her fingers burning his skin. Fire and blood conquering the storm.
And then it was gone.
Tumblr media
“Consider it done, milady.”
Rhadamanthys was the perfect soldier. Calm and collected in front of the Commander, a warrior prepared to slaughter any creature between him and his duty. A heartless monster, some might say, for Pandora’s pleasure. But she knew better. If he truly recognized that name, if her suspicions were correct, then his heart surely felt the heavy burden of her orders. A pity things turned that way.
Tumblr media
“The Gemini Saint guards her, do not ask me for his motives. If he stands in the way, eliminate him.” She had to lift her head when the Wyvern stood up, his towering height a bonus menace. A strange felling still bothered the Witch’s heart, and Pandora ignored it. It was nothing worthy the attention, not when obligation called.
She slowly began to walk past him after the order, gaze still distant, her attention hovering on candelabra and candles scattered all over the chamber. With a soft movement, Pandora raised her hand and superficially touched Rhadamanthys’ jawline, black nails caressing the skin before she got too far away from reach. A gift for all the trouble she gave him, perhaps. A goodbye kiss.
   “… That will be all.”
