Shatter Me (Series) by Tahereh Mafi

We’ve heard about Tahereh Mafi’s poetic prose bursting with beautiful metaphors and lyrical passion from many of our readers, so we decided to read the Shatter Me series this year, which we recently completed! Meet Juliette, a seventeen year old girl who posses a unique powerful ability, she can’t control. The last time she touched another human being on accident, The Reestablishment imprisoned her for murder.

Locked away for 264 days, she is alone and lonely. A journal she keeps hiding beneath her mattress is her only piece of survival and sanity.. Before she was locked up, Juliette lived in a world, which was deteriorating into chaos. Months later, the sky is a different color, and Juliette may the be only the solution to the The Reestablishment. She must make a choice between obtaining personal freedom or helping a society, which deemed her a monster.  

Although, there are comparisons to X-Men’s Rogue, Juliette doesn’t fully reveal her potential at first. But Mafi has an uncanny ability to write characters, whose blood is boiling and seem realer than paper. They are flesh and bones. We love Mafi’s extensive use of metaphors, and agonizing beautiful prose. There’s a little bit of everything. You will encounter romance, dystopian, science-fiction and even supernatural elements. We recommend Shatter Me to YA readers and anybody who is a true logophile. Mafi’s words dance beautifully on paper and in the heart.
