Fair | Normani
LISTEN BELOW
Like many others, I’ve been rooting for Normani since her time with Fifth Harmony and she jumped out on her solo journey guns blazing. Her first few releases weren’t her alone but she proved that even her on a song by herself could garner platinum status when she released “Motivation.” She started out slow releasing about 2 songs a year, but over the last two years that slowed to one. After releasing “Wild Side” last summer, it was clear that she had made her grown woman transition in her music and I was excited to hear more, but no more music came until now. Fair enough (no pun), you’d expect her to switch it up a bit to showcase the other side of her art, but this song is not quite doing it for me. The production is super toned down and Normani showcases a more vulnerable side of herself in the song, which I do like. The song isn’t anywhere near bad, but it just feels like it’s missing something to me. I also feel like it’s a song that I could appreciate more as an album cut, but it’s a different feeling hearing it in the context of a single, especially since she hasn’t released any music in about 7 months. There’s a lot to compete with in the field of female R&B right now, but Normani definitely has the talent and right machine behind her so I’m hoping the break between this and the next song isn’t as long.

Free The Shiners | 42 Dugg x EST Gee
LISTEN BELOW
As two of the hottest and newest rappers in the game, it only makes sense when you see these two collab together. That would remain true even if the two weren’t labelmates on Yo Gotti’s CMG label. They individually have been making a lot of noise over the last year and both pretty much popped during the pandemic which deserves some extra kudos. The two announced that they would be doing a joint album, Last Ones Left, but it was initially reported that the project would be dropping last month in February. It never came, and this seems to be the first sign that the project is in fact coming as the first single release. It’s sounding like a song I could hear from either one of them solo so it definitely works with them together. I would anticipate that the rest of the album is going to be along these lines, but since we don’t have an updated release date, it’s up in the air when it’s actually coming.

CYBAH | SYD x Lucky Daye
LISTEN BELOW
If you’ve kept up with this blog over the years, you know that SYD is an absolute favorite of mine and I’ve been missing her, but she always finds a way to come back right on time. Though she’s never really gone too long as she’s released a few singles and popped up on some surprising guest appearances over the last few years or so. Not only did she return with this beautiful song, but she also announced that her new album will be releasing on April 8th. The album, which will actually be her sophomore solo release, is titled Broken Hearts Club, and this single seems to be a preview into the project, and a dope one at that. SYD sounds magical on the song and then to have Lucky Daye feature was such an extra touch that felt so right. They ask “could you break a heart” in such an angelic way and the production matches perfectly. I’m super excited to hear this album, especially after hearing this, and honestly, because SYD never disappoints.

Unbelievable | Dave East x Method Man
LISTEN BELOW
Even though Dave East has been keeping himself busy with the acting these days, he’s never forgotten about the music. He returns in the new year with the new EP, HDIGH (How Did I Get Here?) and all 9 tracks on the project make it clear that despite him spreading his talents recently, rap is still his number one. This track was the introduction to the EP and it was a hell of a way to start it off. Method Man puts on a masterclass on how to age in rap, not sound aged and still be able to rap circles around other rappers. The rest of the project has a little of the various styles you can expect from Dave East, with him slowing it down a bit on a couple of the songs. He still has many of his fans anticipating his next album release because although he has a hefty catalog of mixtapes and EPs under his belt, he’s still only had his debut album, Survival, which dropped in 2019. Some will hold out for that sophomore release, but he’s been pretty consistent with his output so they should probably just be happy that he hasn’t abandoned music altogether while he’s been doing the tv/film thing.
