Something had felt... off.
The common room seemed unusually quiet. Indeed, it was the very early morning, but there would usually be a couple housemates up and ready to go about their day; relaxing in the morning before they head to the Great Hall to feast on the delicious breakfast selections. In general the atmosphere seemed to have shifted. It just didn't feel the same. The buzz of excitement you had to see your favorite pair of Slytherin boys in the morning faded out to what felt to be nervousness. Maybe it was the events in the past forty-eight hours is what is causing this affect on you. You were simply just imagining things. But you knew deep down, it was not your imagination and it was the unfortunate truth. Harshly sighing, thinking about it was causing a figment of a headache in the back of your head.
But at the current moment you had one goal in mind: Find Ominis Gaunt. If your current situation didn't feel so grim, you would've laughed at how close the two of you are now. Upon first arriving at Hogwarts, Ominis had his guard up around you which caused him to come off as rude in a way. You didn't mind because you knew he didn't genuinely mean it. What caused the two of you to even become friends however, was none other than Sebastian Sallow himself.
Speaking of Ominis- you had to find him. Your last conversation with him left an ill feeling bubbling in your gut. All you had to do after that was wait. But after everything you were tired of waiting, your patience wore thin. It had left your mind racing and the gut-wrenching feeling all remained after hours of waiting. So in a hurry you had left the common room with two destinations in mind. One: The Undercroft. As likely it would be that he'd be there, given how early it was, it was quite a bit of a stretch. Two: The Great Hall. And this is exactly where you will be heading.
Rushing to the Great Hall, you had passed a few familiar faces. All of which said a passing greeting to you and you passed by with a smile and wave. Despite the running pit of emotions occurring in your mind.
"Oh there you are!" A voice shouted off in a distance. Regardless of your name not being called you were inclined to look, the voice all to familiar to you. "Hello Poppy, how are things?" You turned your attention towards the sweet Hufflepuff as she rushed over. Though your mind was elsewhere. "Brilliant! Now that the poachers are backing off. Really I can't thank you enough for everything you've done." Poppy took your folded hands into hers and gave an appreciative squeeze. You lightly chucked and reciprocated the light squeeze to your companions hands. "Really, no thanks is needed. I would do whatever for the helpless creatures a thousand times over." A genuine smile took over your features. Over time at your first year at Hogwarts you've really grown to love the magical creatures.
"A thanks is needed, you're really amazing you know?" Her simple words of praising left you standing taller than you had before. "Please Poppy, no need for flattery. I'd say the same for you." Your tone held a joking manner but it was genuine all the same. A smile graced Poppy's face as she let go of your hands, realizing she held onto them for longer than she should've. Having really only been friends with beasts she isn't certain about what is right and wrong between doing stuff with her fellow humans. "Oh! Sorry I've actually wanted to ask when you'd like to get some butter beers?" Poppy had questioned remembering the main reason she called out to you in the first place. It clicked in your head that your last conversation was mentioned that you both should get butter beer sometime. Especially since Poppy had never gone to get some before. Which you had found ridiculous! You had gotten some when you first arrived at Hogwarts and she'd been here for four years longer than you had. So of course, being her first real friend you had promised an outing for her try it for the first time. Though the sparked memory of getting butter beers on your first day had reminded you of Sebastian. Which had also reminded you that were in the middle of finding Ominis to discuss about that exact person.
"I haven't had thought of an exact day yet. But I need to tend to some things at the moment. I'll send you an owl?" You hurriedly said, hoping you didn't sound rude or that you were just trying to avoid hanging out with her any longer. But she seemed to pick up that whatever it was looked urgent. Plus when she had called out to you she did see how you were trying to rush through the castle without knowing why. Which is why you can not blame her for accidentally derailing your little mission. "Yes! That would be lovely, well off to it then I suppose." Poppy had left with a wave leaving you to your own. Now that you are back onto track: to the Great Hall.
The rest of the way there was less distracting allowing you to rush to the Great Hall without any interruptions. The two large doors leading into the exquisite hall was left open so the sleep deprived students didn't have to struggle pushing open the doors to try and retrieve a breakfast meal. You gaze went over to the Slytherin table, scanning up and down in hopes to find your friend. And it seems luck was on your side today when you spotted Ominis' nicely combed hair. He looked to be eating but in actuality he picked at his food with the utensil in his hand. Relief washed over you when you made your way over to the table, sliding into a seat across from him.
"Ominis." You announced your presence to him with a hushed whisper. No doubt he knew someone sat in front him but he wouldn't have known who unless you've spoken. His head rose in the direction of your voice, before he got to say anything, you spoke with urgency, "Have you spoken to Anne yet?" First his reaction to the question was widen eyes then he furrowed his brows. Ominis, unknowingly, was a very expressive person and you would have laughed at how shocked he had looked if the situation didn't feel so dire. "Merlin not here!" He listened in on his surroundings to make sure no one was within close proximity, "We can talk about it after classes in the Undercroft." Brows still furrowed, he stated the last bit in a low voice so only you could hear. The Great Hall was dreadfully quiet this early in the morning.
You nodded, "You're right, I've just been-" You didn't even have to finish your sentence as Ominis had spoken out of turn saying, "I know." The two of you fell silent after. Ominis knew how you felt, maybe not entirely to your extent, but he knew. No words needed to be spoken about it any further considering the two of you seemed to be on the same page.
Since you were already sat at a table, you decided to help yourself to the breakfast that was steaming fresh in front of you. Not that you exactly felt up to eating, feels as though you can barely stomach food at the very moment. Regardless you gave yourself small portions to slowly consume, whereas Ominis was poking his food not even making an attempt to eat. You had taken notice of it, debating back and forth with yourself whether you should tell him to at least try to eat. In the end you did, but the blind Gaunt could be stubborn, not wanting to do something unless he, himself, has decided to. What had shocked you was he only responded with a nod and attempted to stuff down his food. What remained of breakfast was filled of mutual silence between you two.
The clock ticked in seconds. As each second went by it seemed to go so dreadfully slow. It was like Merlin himself was making you suffer in your anxiety by slowing down the time. But of course it was all in your head.
If you weren't looking at the time, you had looked over at the desk that sat in front of your own. A space was empty. Ominis was in the seat directly in front of yourself, but the seat to his right remained unoccupied. It's usually where Sebastian sits. Right next to his best friend. The empty seat had made you think about how you haven't even seen him all day. The worst case scenario thoughts kept plaguing your mind, rather than thinking of the positive outcomes.
But beside all that drowning thoughts nonsense, you were now in your last class of day: Defense Against the Dark Arts. Professor Hecat, thankfully, decided on not doing any practice spells this day and go by textbook. Not that you don't mind a good duel every now and then, today just did not feel like a day you would want to duel against a fellow student. Guess you could say your mind only wonders about a very important conversation you're about to have. You'd probably end up severely distracted as you duel and get your ass handed to you. Something you definitely do not want.
After what felt like an eternity, the bells had chimed signaling the end of class. Gathering your parchment (that wasn't even written in) and quill, you had shoved them into a small enchanted bag you carry around. Doesn't even matter if the papers were scrunched at the aggressive action. You could finally go to the Undercroft.
Rushing out of the DADA classroom, you had made your way down the staircases to the entrance to the Undercroft. It was quite essential to get there before any other students left their classes and started roaming around the castle since they had just finished up the last class of the day. Ominis trailed behind you, maintaining a bit of a distance, not quite moving as fast as you are. With how quickly you left the class you practically flung yourself out of there into almost a sprint.
The entrance to the Undercroft opened with practiced wand movement. Stepping through led you down a short corridor to a large room that was blocked off by a steel gate. Of course until you step up near it, it would open itself up to you and any visitors.
Sebastian's head raised itself from looking at the floor at the sound of screeching metal from the entrance-slash-exit. Your gaze caught onto Sebastian, he sat hunched over a couch you had conjured. Which- thanks to Professor Weasley for teaching you that, lounging in the Undercroft was considerably more comfortable. Wide eyed, he stared at you then at Ominis who had entered behind you. Ominis had almost walked right into you, if not for his peculiar working wand he would have. You were stopped dead in your tracks staring at the brunette. So, this is where he had been all day. There was so much you wanted to say to him but you felt as if your words caught in your throat.
"What is it?" Ominis had asked as he walked around your figure to further let himself into the room. You broke your gaze on Sebastian to face your friend, "Uhm, Sebastian's been in here..." His reaction to the news was releasing out a sigh. "Let's speak, quickly." Ominis turned to the closest corner near the entrance, away from the prying ears of his life long best friend. One look over at Sebastian just to see his eyes had averted back to looking at the ground. He didn't even want to know what was going on with you two.
Joining up at the corner that Ominis had deemed good enough for you to speak at, silence fell over the entirety of the Undercroft. You stood in front of the blonde, picking at your fingers as you anxiously awaited for him to tell you the news. "Anne has decided to not send him to Azkaban." A feeling of relief washed over you. Good, that's all you wanted to hear. All this anxious waiting just to hear a simple sentence gave you a sense of calmness. "But," He continued, causing you to hold your breath, as if he was going to downpour the actual news to you, "You need to tell this to Sebastian."
Confusion wrote itself onto your face. Not that Ominis could see it, "Wait, why aren't you going to tell him? Wouldn't it be better if it came from yourself?" He had tilted his head down at your questions. The blind Slytherin was struggling to form his thoughts into words. Mouth slightly gaping as he figure a way to word what plagues his mind. "As for now, I don't intend on speaking to Sebastian. I had told him on multiple occasions to not get involved in the dark arts." A frown overtook his features, he spoke softly as he continued on, "He betrayed my trust. I hope you understand."
Upon hearing the mention of the dark arts, you can't help but feel guilty. You felt as if you kind of encouraged Sebastian to dig deeper into it. Even though you didn't. But you also didn't tell him to stop or somehow prevent him from going further. And of course Ominis would be hurt by it. Ridiculous is what you felt when it had hit you why Ominis feels as if he can't be around Sebastian. You did understand, which is why you won't question him further. "I do, and I will tell him the news. And thank you for helping convince Anne to not send him away." Ominis sighed, "Only because you convinced me." A short pause of silence came from him, "Though you may be right about not turning him in. But in one way or another he should know the consequences of his actions."
You nodded along his words, "I couldn't agree more Ominis." It was the truth, yes, he shouldn't have done what he did, and yes, he rightfully should be sent to Azkaban for not only performing a killing curse but also for the two other curses as well. But at the end of the day, he was just a kid (admittedly you all were) desperate to find a cure for his sister. Willing to do anything that in anyway could help. This is why you wanted to overlook his actions. Though, it didn't make him any less at fault.
"Well, if that is all, I'll be off. Good luck." Ominis nodded his head and sent a closed tight lipped smile your way that vanished as quickly as it came. Without giving you a chance to say anymore he briskly walked off to the exit. The steel gates shut closed behind him. This left you and Sebastian alone in the Undercroft. You looked back over to him, taking note how he still refused to glance over in your direction. He was caught in an action of twiddling his thumbs. With a deep breath in, then out, you made your way over to him.
You sat on the three person couch next to him. He in the middle with you to his right, next to the arm. It left a considerable amount of distance between you two. The silence was deafening, Sebastian still caught circling his thumbs around one another. No one had said anything, time ticked away and it just made the Slytherin more anxious.
He stopped his anxious maneuvers and willed himself to look up at his oncoming fate. Quickly then, he realized Ominis was no where to be found. When did he leave? He questioned to himself. Sebastian had been so wrapped up in his thoughts after seeing both of his best friends enter together. At that moment he knew that you two were figuring out a way to drag him to his impending fate of getting sent to Azkaban. But here you were, sitting next to him in silence, just the two of you. No Ominis in sight. Maybe, he thought, you were here trying to ease him into going without a fight, and if he had tried to run Ominis was waiting at the exit.
You had turned your head to Sebastian, his brown hair glowing red under the lit fire, something you've always admired. Disregarding that thought of admiring him, you saw his face contorted into confusion as his eyes traced where Ominis once stood in the Undercroft. "What's going through that mind of yours?" Sebastian turned to look at you, you being the one to finally break the silence. For the first time today, your expression was calm. No longer carrying the anxious look you once bore. Him looking at you seemed to ease his nerves a bit, just only a bit. "I'm being sent to Azkaban, aren't I?" His interlocked hands tightened against themselves as he asked the question. You sighed knowing the feeling of waiting for an impending fate to come. Though it wasn't your fate, it was his, you still worried nonetheless. "No... You're not being sent away Sebastian."
His tensed up eyebrows had relax at the information. Relief washed over him as he leaned back into the couch from once being hunched over, his head resting on top of the cushion, looking at the plain ceiling of the Undercroft. "Good... That's good." He whispered, mostly to himself. The room fell quiet again, you were unsure what else to say more. You probably should mention how Ominis won't be speaking to Sebastian again until he deemed Sebastian trustworthy enough to not go off the deep end again. Rather than letting the boy next to you find out on his own when he tries conversing with Ominis to only be given the cold shoulder in return. "You should know, Sebastian," Your tongue swiped over your lips, unaware of how dry your mouth had became in these past few moments, "it'd probably be best if you give Ominis some space. At least for the time being."
The boy said nothing in return. His head, most definitely, so full of thoughts and swirling emotions. Truthfully it was a lot to take in for him. Everything had felt as if it was all crashing at once in such a short span of time. Sebastian had sent a letter via owl to Anne. The chance of her ever answering was unknown to him. Regardless he wasn't even entirely sure if she did answer back, considering he'd been holed up in the Undercroft since he returned back to Hogwarts from the catacomb. Anne being the person he did all this for, was understandably angry at him, and for who knows how long. He lost her, and now Ominis too.
Nothing could make you leave at this moment. You saw the exhaustion of Sebastian as he sat back motionless, eyes clenched closed. It almost felt as if your heart stabbed in pain at the sight before you. The Sallow boy felt your gaze on him. A thought occurred to him how you were still here. Even in the pained silence. At any moment you could've gotten up and left but you didn't. He was thankful, even though he lost the two very dear to him, you were still by his side.
"I'm glad we met." Sebastian turned his head on the back of the couch to meet your eyes. A sad smile adorning his face. You couldn't help but copy his expression. "I am too, Seb." His eyes scanned your face, taking in your reciprocating features. So much compassion was shining through your eyes, the intensity of it had his gaze break away from yours. He didn't deserve it. Trailing down, he caught your non-dominate hand absentmindedly rubbing soothing circles into your wrist.
The soft smile broke, eyes transfixed onto your arm, "How's your arm?" Sebastian had asked so quietly that you almost didn't catch it. "Oh." Now acutely aware of your actions you had stilled entirely. Slight stinging remained on your wrist, though it was tolerable, something you could barely feel unless you were paying mind to it. And the worry that stormed your mind all through out today had made you completely forget of your injury.
Memories of the day before flashed before you. The Inferi, all surrounding you, their face lifeless with only a goal in mind to attack you and anything other living. They had started grouping up and surrounding you, making you focus your attention on them instead of the angry Solomon who had started casting spells both to you and Sebastian. It was when you had just casted a  ring Incendio to make the Inferi back off when you felt a hot stinging flame hit your wrist. The sudden ache of pain caused you to drop your wand and clutch your wrist as if it in some way would ease the pain. Whether if the older Sallow had meant to hit the Inferi or directly aimed for you, it was unknown. You kneeled over in pain, wrist within your clutch and had watch anger consume Sebastian. Everything had unfolded from there.
Blinking away the memory before it had refreshed on that part, you pulled up your sleeve of your injured arm. The fabric had scratched it, soothing the remaining stinging only for it to return not a second later. Site of the injury was a slightly deeper color than your normal skin tone, but still looking much better than it had before. It should be completely healed by the end of the day. "Nothing a little Wiggenweld couldn't fix." You twisted your wrist slightly to show Sebastian the healing wound. He sat up, body twisted to face you to examine your arm. A sudden and quick twitch of his hand was something that didn't go unnoticed from you. Sebastian had an urge to grab onto you, hold your arm and run his fingers along the burn in hopes that it would somehow, in someway, completely heal it at that very moment. As quick as that thought came though, he pushed the urge back. Right now didn't seem like to be good time to do so.
Guilt washed over his face as the thoughts continue running through his mind. None of this should've happened, especially not you getting hurt the way you did. It was wrong of Solomon to have directly attacked you when you were distracted, unfair even. "Hey..." You softly said, placing a hand onto Sebastian's shoulder. "I'm okay." A smile appeared on your face. What exactly was going on in that brain of his, you had no idea but your sentiment seemed to work when he snapped out of his blank gaze. When his eyes caught yours, you almost had half a mind to ask if he was okay. You already knew the answer to that. Instead, your hand traveled down his shoulder and grasped his hand that lay palm down in his lap. His cold skin in your grasp was oddly comforting to your warm hands. Both of you had turned down and looked at your hand overtop his. All of Sebastian's thoughts faded within an instant, your warm hand made his lips quirk upward ever so slightly. He turned his hand around and interlocked your fingers with his. Whatever had been troubling him can just disappear for a moment. For now he just wanted to relish in this moment with you.
Nothing has been spoken following after. Just the two of you sitting in silence basking in each other's presence. The anxiety of today completely washed away, your heart calm and steady, knowing that Sebastian will still be here at Hogwarts, or rather with you. As for Sebastian, his mind was at ease now confirming that at least you were still by his side. Even with all that he has done.

The final message of Obi-Wan Kenobi
This is Master Obi Wan Kenobi.  I regret to report that both our Jedi Order and the Republic, have fallen with a dark shadow of the Empire rising to take their place.  This message is a warning and a reminder for any surviving Jedi. Trust in The Force.  Do not return to the Temple…that time has past.  And our future is uncertain. We will each be challenged.  Our trust. Our faith. Our friendships. But we must persevere.  And in time, a new hope will emerge. May the Force be with you, always.

Be cruel to your characters.
Let bad things happen to good people. Let your characters try and fail. And try again. And fail again. Let them be betrayed in the worst possible way. Let them betray others because they have no choice. Force them into situations that make them uncomfortable. Force them to argue or fight or bargain their way out. Drive them to the brink of insanity. Push them over the edge. Take everything away from them. Let them realize what they’ve lost.
Be kind to your characters.
Let faith and perseverance win out. Let love be enough. Let the Sun dry up the rain. Give them friends who will never leave. Let someone save them before the axe falls. Acquit them of false accusations. Give them the strength to stand up again. And again. When they’ve lost hope, give them something to believe in. Remind them there’s good in the world. Remind them there’s good in them, too. Surprise them. Make them laugh until they cry. Teach them that they can’t be broken.
Most importantly: balance.
Even the darkest tragedy has its moments of light; if your reader has no hope that things will get better, if your character doesn’t learn or become stronger for their suffering, the story becomes meaningless pain. Likewise, not only is it unrealistic for a character to go through life never encountering conflict or sadness, it’s boring. Not every conflict has to be life-or-death in order to be meaningful. Give your characters and your plots high points and lows; just make it real for them.

Our Adventure - Sean Diaz x Reader [Part 3]

  "Shit. Shit. Shit."
I cursed jumping up from the spot I was basically laying down on. Looking over I see both Sean and Daniel are completely passed out. The damaged scene in front of me was mind blowing. All my mind could possibly think of is: No way this is real. No way this is actually happening. But everything to confirm it is right in front of me.
"Told you." The same voice from earlier said. I growled, walking over to Esteban's limp body, "Shut it."
I kneeled down next to the boy's dad, putting a bit of pressure onto his neck with both my index and middle finger. He has no pulse. I retracted my hand as I attempted to try and not tear up. A man that I considered a second father. He treated me as his own when even my own dad wasn't there for me. He cared for me. I stood up, feeling a bit of emptiness.
A faint noise of multiple sirens. If I saw what I actually think I saw, then we need to get out of here. There's no way I imagined what I saw. The evidence is right in front me. I rushed over to Sean and violently shook him. "Sean! Wake up!" I heard him stir, but the sirens just continued to grow. "C'mon man!" Sean woke up startled and slowly got up with my help. His eyes examined the area like how I somewhat did. HIs eyes started to gloss over.
I allow him to have his moment, both us staying silent. "Oh fuck." He whimpered as he went over to his dad, "No way." I walked over to him to hug him for a second, which he returned. "Sean we don't have time we have to go." As if on cue the police sirens got even louder, probably meaning the turned the corner. Sean attempted to wake up Daniel, though most likely he wasn't going to be awoken. I picked up Daniel bridal style, but my best friend just took him into his arms.
I started to sprint over to my home but Sean stopped me, "Wait- wait! Where are you going?" I turned around, "I need to grab something, I'll be quick!" He nodded his head, not saying anything more and jogged over to his house to most likely get something.
I whipped out my key chain to unlock the door and slammed it open. Running into my dads room, also trying to not slip and fall everywhere, I dug through a dresser and pulled out and envelope. Quickly, I shoved it into my backpack that still remained on my body. As I was about to exit the house I remembered about my phone. "Don't need this anymore." I mumbled as I threw the phone into the living room and dashing out of the house.
Spotting Sean leaving his home, I ran over to him as quickly as I could. "Sean!" I called out, "Let's go." I finished off with a slight pant. He once again nodded as we both started to sprint away from what we call home.
The three of us walked in silence, mainly because the youngest of us three was asleep, and I was giving Sean some time to himself. Though it has been a few hours since we've been walking. We didn't take anytime to stop. "Do you want me to carry Daniel?" I asked, my voice slightly hoarse from not talking.
"No. I'm fine." Sean said shaking his head, his gaze focused on the road ahead of him. "How about a break? We've been walking for awhile..." I trailed off looking at the Mexican boy with a concern gaze. "No!- Just.. no." He snapped but calmed down. He shifted Daniel's position so he wont be that uncomfortable.
"Look- I know this isn't the best time for you. But Sean, did you see what he did?" I completely stopped in my tracks and looked at Sean. He realized I stopped walking and turned around and looked in my eyes. My friend clearly looked confused as he scrunch his eyebrows together, "What?"
I scratched my arm and bit my lip trying to think of how to explain. "What Daniel did," I pointed at the unconscious boy before dropping my hand, "the disaster you saw after I woke you up?"
"I- uh, I don't know." Sean stumbled over his words, "What exactly happened?" I stared deeply into his brown eyes, not making a single movement. I was trying to study him to see if he was actually confused and didn't know about the situation. "Never mind. I'll explain to you later." I proceed to walk away, Sean quickly following after me and falling into step beside me. His gaze kept diverting between the road and I, probably to make sure he wasn't about to trip on something, "Explain what to me exactly?" He continued to press. For the second time I stopped in my tracks and gave Sean a soft look, "I will explain to you about it eventually. Okay? I promise." He looked at me with a bit of doubt, so I continued on, "When have I ever broken a promise?"
Sean nodded his head agreeing with me, "True." I smiled and lightly patted his shoulder. I waited for Sean to continue walking before I did so myself. I wanted to wait before explaining what happened with Daniel to him. All it would do is put more pressure onto my friend. Especially after the fact he just very recently lost his father. I really don't think telling him about his brother would be best for his conscious.
A parking area where people usually park when they need a break from driving came into view. Luckily there was some benches there where we could possibly rest at. I picked up my walking speed, leaving Sean trailing behind a bit. I slowed down when I reached the bench and sat myself down, letting out a relax sigh. Sean caught up and stood awkwardly in front of the bench, probably not know what to do with Daniel. "Let his head rest on my thigh." I told Sean patting my leg. He slowly lowered the kid down onto the bench.
The teen placed him down then sat next to me, picking up his little brothers legs and setting them down onto his own. "I'm so tired." I said rubbing my face with my hands in hopes to wake myself up. The sun was setting from the sky so it left an orangey color. "Should we just rest here for the night?" Sean scanned the area, looking around. I shrugged and looked down at Daniel, "I mean might as well. We don't have anywhere else to go do we?"
"I'm hungry!" Daniel whined, shoulders sagging as he walked along us. "I know, I am too." A small smile escaped my lips as I looked down at someone I considered a brother. I ruffled his hair to hopefully lighten his mood. All he did said was 'eugh' and tried to fix his messy hair, which honestly didn't do much. Sean is quiet. He's been quiet.
The eldest boy hasn't been talking much. Though we did have conversations here and there, but that's about it. Mainly Daniel and I were the one that filled the silence with our chatter. Whenever I chat with Daniel it keeps breaking my heart. Sean and I decided to not tell Daniel about his deceased father since he is clueless about it. Thinking about it- how could any sane person tell a child that their last and only parent figure involved in their life, was no longer in this world? I know to hold it in and not tell him, but every time he spoke, or I even took a glance at him, the thought keeps crawling up in the back of my mind.
We were far out enough to be considered out of the Seattle area. All that was seen was a few stray houses near by, trees, and the road. A road that only has very few cars passing by.
I noticed a group of buildings all together in one spot as we continued on our journey, "Is that a town up ahead?" I asked aloud. You can clearly see Daniel got excited when he started to bounce on his tip-toes. "Let's go find out!" He shouted as he took off in a sprint.
Sean and I quickly reacted by following him. The smaller boy had a head start, but thanks to our longer legs we were able to catch up to him pretty quickly. By 'we' I mean Sean. He was on the track team after all.
Sean grabbed his little brother by the arm, "Dude! Don't just take off like that." I was able to catch up in a few steps, and once I was in front of Daniel, he had a sadden look on his face. His mood obviously lowered. I placed a hand on his shoulder and crouched to his level, "What Sean means is, we don't want to lose you, or something bad happening to you. Okay? So don't do that again." I informed him with a soft voice so it at least helps him indicate that we're not mad at him.
"Alright, come on, let's go explore!" I said with enthusiasm to try and brighten his mood. Sean didn't seem to complain about it, he as well looked curious and wanted to explore the place. I grabbed Daniels smaller hand into my own to prevent him from dashing away from us again, "Now let's see if we can find a place to eat."
For awhile we walked aimlessly around the small town until we came across a diner that flashed bright neon lights out in the front. A sign on the door flashed a green light saying 'open!' in a cursive form. I tapped Sean's taller shoulder without looking at him, which may caused me some trouble on exactly finding where his shoulder was. I felt his gaze on me as I turned to look to him and gestured with my eyes, if he hadn't gotten the hint yet I used my hand to point at the building, "Look."
Daniel 'ooo'ed as he saw where my finger was pointing at, "Dinner..?" He tried pronouncing the sign. My reaction was to chuckle as Sean rolled his eyes, but in a playful manner.
"It's pronounced dine-er." I correct Daniel, he quietly said 'ohh'. "Come on." Sean said as he lead the way over to the building. Both Daniel and I followed closely behind the tallest person in the group.
When we entered the diner, a ding of a bell rang once the door has opened. "Welcome! Sit anywhere you please. I'll be right there with your menu's!" A waitress cheerfully greeted us, gesturing to all the empty tables. Only two tables were occupied by people so that left a variety of options to sit at. I guided Daniel over to a booth that was near a window in the front. The younger boy went into the booth first sitting next to my window, I slide into the seat after him, while Sean just sat across from us, having the whole row to himself.
The previous waitress that welcomed us came back with two menus along with a kids one, which was obviously meant for Daniel. She placed each one down in front of us with a smile spread across her face, before she left she said, "I'll come back in a few minutes to order your drinks."
Silenced consumed us as we all took a look at our what meals we could possibly have. Daniel being a chatter box, nothing wrong with that though, he started to say a lot what looks good to eat and wondering what he should have. Sean was the first to decide what he wanted. At least I think he did, I saw that he closed the menu and set it down, but continued to stare at the front page of it. The diner was a breakfast all day type of place, so I decided to settle down on the standard pancake with bacon, and eggs.
"Do you know what you want?" I asked Sean. "Yeah." He said with a smile plastered on his face, that quickly faded. "How about you Daniel?" Daniel proceed to shove the paper menu into my face, well not literally but he did really want to show me what he was getting, and pointed at the food he wished to order. Which was a just plain cheese burger.
The waitress came back, a notebook and pen in hand, ready to take our orders. Sean went first to order his drink, then Daniel, and lastly me. "Wait is it okay if we can order our meals now?" I questioned before she was ready to walk away. Once again she put a welcoming smile onto her face and said 'sure'. This time I went first with ordering then the Diaz boys next. Unsurprisingly Sean went with a cheeseburger like his brother except it wasn't plain like his.
"Hey! Do you want to play tik tac toe with me?" Daniel placed the game in front of me and giving me the red crayon while he kept the blue one. He probably knew I was going to say yes anyways. The youngest out of us three did the first move and decided to go with x. In what felt like forever Sean finally spoke up, "Remember when Lyla kept beating us in that game?" I looked away from the game to stare at Sean who was staring back at me but also looking back and forth from the game and I. Laughing, I made my move on the game as Daniel concentrated on where to put the next mark. "Yeah, she was like the master at this game." I shook my head at the fond memories. "She never beat me! So that must mean... I'm extra good!" Daniel spoke with confidence laced in his voice. I chuckled and ruffled his hair once more and agreed with what he said.
During the time of waiting for our food and eating our food was just filled with looking back at memories, making inside jokes (that only Sean and I got), and just smiling and having fun. Sean finally got out of his shell of being quiet, which made me extremely happy. Don't get me wrong I love Daniel, but sometimes you need to chat with someone your own age. It was nice to see my best friend was finally somewhat out of his grieving stage, which is totally understandable that he's going to be sad after losing his father.
After all of us finished eating, erm Daniel was still somewhat trying to scarf down the rest of his food, we just mindlessly chatted about random things. Once again, the waitress came up to us noticing that we were done eating, "Would you kids like any dessert?" Daniels eyes seemed to light up in excitement as his head perked up from his food, "I want a chocolate milkshake!" He said excitedly with his mouth full of food. The middle-aged lady laugh then said of course and wrote down his order. "Um," I gestured towards Sean and I, "Can we both have a vanilla milkshake to share?" For the second time she wrote down our order and said she'll be right back out with our drinks.
"I'm surprised you remembered I like vanilla." Sean teased me as I scoffed. "Well of course your choice of flavoring is very plain." I joked back  which caused a reaction of both of us to laugh. The following events after that just felt so, peaceful, and calm. It was like we didn't have nothing to worry about. We... We we're kids again. Who knew during the past day of just walking and complete silence, and having to keep an eye on our backs, we'd forget already what it felt like to be youthful and care-free.
It was time to gather our things and get ready to leave. When it came to who would pay, Sean and I fought over who would pay for the meal, like a couple who just went on their first date. I had to pull out the envelope that I shoved into my backpack and paid for the meal. That was already thirty dollars wasted, but just as long as we go to eat, especially Daniel, and he had a good meal, that's all I care about. Of course Sean too, I didn't want him to starve himself to death.
"Alright lets go." I said, walking towards the diner's entrance-slash-exit, with the two boys following me. Time for more walking.

A click of the lock echoed out through the empty house. I set my bag that was hanging on my shoulder down on the couch that was near the door. Finally getting the chance to look at my home, the kitchen and living room was littered with empty beer bottles and dirty dishes.
"Are you kidding me? I just cleaned yesterday." I mumbled to myself as I picked up as much bottles as I could carry and threw them into the recycling bin in the kitchen. Honestly how can someone make this much of a mess in less than twenty-four hours? Now to cleaning up the dishes.
While picking up the dirty plates and placing them into the sink so I could get ready to clean them, my phone buzzed in my back pocket of my pants. Gently placing the last dish into the sink I pulled out my phone and turned it on to check the notification. On the lock screen it read "Lyla". Geez what did she want now.
"U know he likes u" is what read in the screen when I unlocked and opened my phone. I bit my lip in trying to think of a reply to that. I know that she means Sean. But getting my hopes up is the last thing I need right now. Plus he likes Jenn right? He can't like both Jenn and I. I kept bouncing my leg in anticipation as I finally came up with a reply. I typed on my keyboard and sent the message.
The message was simple and only consisted of one word, "who?" is what I said in reply.
Of course Lyla immediately read it and started to reply back. The three animated dots at the bottom of the screen just made me bounce my leg even more. Along with that, I started to bite my bottom lip, which caused it to turn slightly red from the pressure. A few seconds went by and my phone vibrated showing that a new message was received.
It read, "wow k you're more stupider than I thought. skype me in 5" I rolled my eyes at her message as I didn't respond back to her. I just locked my phone and stuffed it back into my pocket where it usually remains at. "The dishes can wait." I muttered, exiting the kitchen and entering the living room again. I approach the couch where I left my backpack at and pick it up to bring it to my room with me.
When I entered my room I slammed my door shut, following after that I threw my bag onto the bed which resulted in a slight thud noise. I sighed and walked over to my decent size desk where I mainly complete all of my wonderful homework on. Flipping open my MacBook I saw it flashed a low battery sign. Walking over to my bed I went to the nearest plug and unplugged my charger that was abandon there throughout the day.
In just a few steps, I went back over to my desk and plugged the charger in the nearest outlet there was. Finally plugging in the charger to the laptop, I proceed to unlock it by entering my password. When it showed the home screen the first thing I did was open the application Skype.
The moment it finished loading I clicked on Lyla's contact which was in my recent, considering she is one of very little of my friends. I clicked on the video call button, which in an instant she once again quickly answered. "You called?" I half joked as I propped my elbow on the desk and used my hand to support my head.
"Okay I wanted to call you before we get in a group call with Sean." Lyla informed me as I slowly nodded, her watching my every move. She inhaled some air before continuing, "Anyway, since you're so dense to even realize that Sean likes you." My friend emphasis the 'sean' part. "And sorry for hooking Jenn up with Sean. I didn't expect it to go so well!" I side eyed Lyla before I moved from my currently position to rub my face with my hands.
I can already feel the stress acne.
"Look Lyla, I don't really care if they're going well or not. As long as he's happy and good, then great! I'll still be there for him. I honestly don't even want a relationship right now." My response had a bit of clear annoyance in my voice, which I didn't mean to do. I know Lyla means well. But whenever the topic about me liking Sean comes into play, she won't drop it. After what I said there was an awkward pause between us. She was most likely just trying to come up with a response.
"I'm sorry for pressuring this onto you. I just want the best for you." She apologized, her tone much softer than it usually is in her playful attitude. Lyla really comes off as a handful and that's what a lot of people misinterpret about her. The reason I came to love her so much was her loving, caring, and very affectionate side. When we first met (thank you Sean), I honestly had the same idea and view point. I didn't like her at all and always tried to ignore her, but she kept persisting to be my friend, and even calling me one when I didn't see her as one.
The moment I finally accepted Lyla as a friend was when I was having a mental break down at school, she basically dropped her playful persona to make sure I was okay. Really, I thought she was just all happy, rainbow and sunshine, but her showing that side made me feel at peace. At a young age I learned not everything is all good and dandy. Hence why I didn't really accept my current best friend back then.
Hell, even to this day is still get annoyed by that part of her. But what she shows on the inside is what really matters to me.
"I know you're looking out for me... But we gotta look out for Sean too, you know? It isn't just us in our inner circle." I explained to Lyla kind of frantically doing hand motions as I do so. My voice being in a much, much softer tune I continued, "When I say I'm okay, I mean it. Now we got to do what's best for him. Alright?"
She nodded once I finished what I was saying. Quietly saying 'alright' afterward but it seemed more as of she mouthed it. "Okay," Lyla started positioning her self out of the slouch position to change her mood, "before we bring Sean into the call I want to know if you want to spend a night at my house after the party."
I took a moment and weighed the ups and downs before giving her an answer. "Sure why not. Don't have anything else to do afterward." I shrugged my shoulders as I sunk into my chair.
"Great! Now let me finish getting ready before we bring Sean into the call." Lyla cheered as she got up and looked around her room for the needed materials. "Yeah about that I'm going to go and get ready..." I trailed off, my mouse hovering over the red end call button. Lyla rushed over to her desk saying, "Wait, Y/n wa-"
I cut her off by waving and having an innocent smile on my face as I said bye, proceeding to end the call.
Slowly I leaned lower into my seat as I contemplated things. Sighing, I got up and grabbed an empty backpack off a hook that was up on the wall. I tend to have spare bags so I can use them for sleepovers, traveling, and anything else. So I don't have to deal with taking all of my school supplies out of my current backpack I use.
I held the colored backpack in my non-dominate hand as I went over to my closet to pick out some clothing to just stuff into the bag.
This somewhat continued on for a few minutes of just me gathering anything important that I may need to spend a night at Lyla's house. Now as for the money situation, my father and I typically have a wad of cash kept hidden. The money comes from part of when my dad gets paid and the same with me. Yes I surprisingly have a job when most of the weight on my shoulder's involve school. Anyway, the money is just in case of an emergency pops up, or for situations like this when I need to borrow it when I'm out of cash. Obviously I'm not taking all of it, but enough so I have something to keep myself alive.
Taking the money out of the secret stash, I continue onward back into my room where I pull my wallet out of my school bag and just stuff the money into there. I threw the money holder into my 'sleepover' bag. A good amount of thirty dollars should last me for a few snacks I may possibly buy. I zipped up the bag, finally finished with my task. I flopped down onto my bed with my back laying against the cushion and one leg dangling off the bed. I swung my leg back and forth while I took my phone out of my pocket to check any social media or messages I may have received.
A knock on the front door killed the silence that was throughout the whole house. The loud and erupt noise startled me which caused a reaction of me jumping in my bed. My bed was positioned next to the window, so I crawled over to the other side of the bed to look out the front yard. Which also conveniently allowed me to see who was at the door.
With the blinds in the way it was hard to see who it actually was. But with the small frame and messy brown hair, it made it pretty easy to tell. The knocking continued, obviously the small boy being impatient. I rushed out of my bedroom to the living room and opened the front door.
"Hi Daniel. What are you doing here?" I looked around the small boy trying to look for any sign that Sean might've been with him or even Esteban. I've also noticed he had a zombie like outfit on, though I didn't bother to question it since he did tell me his 'secret' project he was working on. Daniel had a slight sway in his posture, "Sean kicked me out of his room and I wanted to know if you want to play with me." He avoided eye contact with me when he explained to me what happened. I pinched the bridge of my nose and mumbled out, "Of course he would do that." I sighed and put a slight smile on my face as I crouched down to his level.
"Yeah! I'll totally play with you. Just go back across the street and wait for me there okay? I'll keep an eye on you so make sure you're safe." I instructed the youngest Diaz. He nodded his head and said a quiet 'okay'.
I stood up properly, watching him make his way back over to his house safely. The smile stayed on my face as I closed my door to prevent any warm air leaving the home. 'He's so adorable.'  I thought, walking out of the main area of the house.
'Something very bad is about to happen.' A deep and what seemed like a disoriented voice echoed throughout what felt like the house. I stopped in my tracks and put my hand up to forehead, closing my eyes. 'Why now?' I got no response in return as I took a deep breath and just tried to ignore what happened and continue back to what I was doing.
I skipped my way over to room for what seemed like the thousandth time and grabbed my bag, putting it on. Also picking up my phone that I abandoned on the bed and put it back in its usual spot.
Walking out the house, I made sure I locked the doors to prevent any intruders as any normal person should do. I quickly dashed across the street not looking both ways, which I might add is very dangerous thing to do. But it's not like anyone really drives down these streets often.
Slowing down my pace once I was in view of the lovely Diaz house. I glanced over the area to find Daniel, instead I see the moment when he accidentally spills his fake blood onto the asshole of a neighbor. Once again I pick up my pace and grabbed Daniel to quickly shove him behind me. "What the hell do you think your doing?!" I yelled at Brett, taking notice of the fact that he got to close to Daniel for my liking.
You can clearly see the fact that the taller boy was fuming in anger, "What I'm doing?! That little asshole spilt fake blood all over my shirt!" He stepped closer to try and grab a hold of Daniel but I took a few steps back to make sure I nor Daniel was within reach of him. "He's a kid you dumb fuck! Of course he would accidentally spilt something!" I countered back.
Brett didn't have any words and just stormed past me, pushing me in the process, to grab onto Daniel's arm. I fell onto the ground which was covered in dirt with a few grass patches here and there. I guess you could say I was stunned. For sure Brett was a douche bag, but it absolutely shocked me that he would even lay a hand on me.
When I got up off the ground, Sean came to both of our rescues. He pushed the white skinned male off of Daniel. I latched my hand onto the younger boys' wrist to put him behind me once again.
"Don't ever touch my brother! Or Y/N! You hear me Brett?" Sean said threateningly, but Brett only replied back with a weak "fuck you".
Brett gestured to his shirt, "He got his fake blood shit all over my shirt... Look!" He angrily pointed at his article of clothing trying to make his statement clear. Daniel walked out from behind Sean and I. "I told you it was an accident." Daniel tried to defend himself, which of course Sean and I obviously believed, "You better leave us alone!"
For the second time Brett tried to grab at him, but Sean stepped in the way while Daniel also hid behind me. "C'mon Daniel let's go inside." I whispered to the boy that was hiding behind me. "Yeah go hide in your dad's garage!" Brett tried to sound scary which really had no affect on both my best friend and I, but with Daniel I'm not to sure.
I grabbed onto Daniel's wrist to try and lead him inside, as the two teens were insulting each other, but he wouldn't budge. "Daniel. Come on." I tried to tug once again but he wouldn't move. I really didn't want this young kid to see a fight go down. But him not moving a single inch really isn't helping.
Sean threw a punch which made Daniel speak up about it. The eldest kid looked at me while Brett was recovering from the punch he gave him. He then looked at Daniel and pointed in the direction of the house, "Get inside! Now." Sean attempted to help which really did nothing. While he was distracted Brett tried to tackle him.
"Okay, we're going now." I demanded, as I tried to pick up Daniel but he just struggled in my grasp. "Daniel we're going inside."
"But what about Sean?"
"He'll be fine Daniel." I finally successfully picked him up after him twisting around in my grasp to try and escape. Sure I felt horrible for taking him against his own will, but as I said, I didn't want him to witness a fight that he shouldn't even be seeing.
Sean seems to have manage to push Brett down, but he didn't get back up or seem responsive. "Shit." I whispered, a police siren coming closer. Though that wasn't my main concern right now.
I dropped Daniel on the ground and instructed him to go inside. "Y/N, get over here!" Sean called out for help as I rushed over to the other side of Brett and kneeled down next to him. The younger brother popped up next to me, who obviously didn't listen to my instructions. "Sean is he hurt?" Daniel asked obliviously.
"Well he's breathing... somewhat. That's a good sign." I thought aloud. I had no idea what to do. What would any person do in this situation exactly?
"Okay... okay, step away!" The officer commanded, "Now!" He continued.
I followed his instructions, slowly backing up from the neighbor. "Calm down officer." Sean told him. I snapped my head towards him, "Sean you need to listen to him. You too Daniel." I got up raising my hands in the air to hopefully show that I'm possessing no threat.
The officer continued to tell us to be quiet. Though I noticed his hand was behind his back.
Sean and Daniel got up with me, walking away from the gasping boy on the ground. This is really a horrible situation to be in. When the adult went to inspect Brett he pulled out his gun and instructed us to get on the ground.
"H-hey man don't be waving that gun around." My body started to shake. I'm not even going to lie, I am terrified right now. The officer simply didn't listen to what I said, Sean and Daniel tried to reason which wasn't really the best thing to do. All three of us went down on the ground, although a bit hesitant and shaky.
This man was pointing a gun at three kids, let alone he has his finger on the trigger. Really you could tell this was his first encounter of something like this.
I couldn't calm my nerves. My eyes just kept looking everywhere except the scene in front of me. My mind is just thinking of how this could actually be happening right now. It went from defending a little brother to having an officer point a gun at us.
Looking over I see Esteban coming around the corner, and instantly sprinting towards us. The officer reacted fast and directed the armed weapon towards him instead of us. Once Sean and Daniel saw their father they tried to explain to him what happened, which then led to Esteban explaining to the cop they meant no harm. I stayed quiet scared out of my mind. I glanced up to see the officer looking extremely overwhelmed.
The gun was just pointing back and forth between us. I noticed Esteban took a step forward, that then caused a reaction out of the officer. A sound of the gun went off. A heavy thud of the Diaz's boys dad fell to the ground. Not even a second after, the sound of Daniel screaming erupted throughout the whole block.
