Final thoughts on the project
I first started to recreate the original picture with my iPhone X. Starting off, my phone camera doesn’t have a wide angle. Also, different than a DSLR camera, there’s no manual feature. While taking the pictures, the focus kept “defocusing” from the area where I wanted the focus to be. Luckily, by focusing and getting closer to my subject which was the grounded coffee on the spoon, it created some sort of blur behind. I had a subtle shallow depth of field in my recreation picture. When I changed the angles for the other shots, the depth of field wasn’t present or as strong. With my DSLR camera, a Nikon D3400 with the base 18-55 mm lens, it was easier to recreate the picture. First of all, with the aperture mode, it was easier to keep the same settings and the same focus. The depth of field was also easier and simpler to recreate because I could change the aperture.
I started by putting my camera to the aperture mode. I began with putting the ISO at 400 since I was shooting inside in front of a wide window. Unfortunately, it was a gloomy day and light was not strong enough so 400 made the picture very dark. I then upgraded to 1600 because 800 was not enough and a higher ISO pass 1600 would make my picture noisy and grainy. With that, I put my aperture between 4 and 5 to have a shallow depth of field. My final picture is F4.5 and a shutter speed of 1/30 which is understandable since I couldn’t use a tripod for the shot and angle I was going for. I could not use a tripod even though I had one because putting my tripod to the exact angle that I wanted to copy the original photo was not physically possible. I tried to set the tripod the closest to the table, but zooming the lens wasn’t enough to get closer and zooming to the maximum had consequences with the camera settings.
The best result for this assignment (without editing the pictures or cropping) was surprisingly the mobile photography result. I find that the phone camera captures the colour more accurately. With the DSLR, it gets a little complicated because you have to change settings that affect other settings.

The still-life photo I chose for this final project is this photo of coffee beans and a spoon of ground coffee.
