Literally literally the reason the first few seasons of spn are so compelling is bc we have these little boys in grown up bodies and Dean’s survival and sense of self is dependent on worshipping John even when John is blatantly, shockingly callous or incompetent, and Sam’s survival and sense of self is dependent on rebelling against John and by proxy Dean. And Sam got out long enough to get an idea of how warped it all was and Dean never left. Sam’s ability to be critical of John allows him to sympathize with dean for being a part of the abuse, and Dean’s deep love for sam allows him to sympathize with Sam for questioning the foundation on which he’s built his tenuous safety, but neither of them can be objective all the time, because abuse unravels reality. That dynamic underlies everything they say and do in the first few seasons and it is literally why the show is good. Dean can’t grow up because he’s always stuck as a child forced to play act as an adult, and Sam can’t grow up because he’s always just in the other room, always excluded, never trusted. John’s last request of Dean encapsulates it perfectly. Like any compassionate viewing of the show reveals that they’re literally both just children trying to be adults, because that’s what isolation and abuse does.
