Princess Haya of Jordan joins the Maiden Factor to pay tribute to her father, King Hussein’s, vision and to show her children, Jalila & Zayed, what their grandfather started, on 20 April 2024. They met with Sarah, Duchess of York, skipper Heather Thomas and crew, toured the boat, learned more about the world tour and how Maiden has raised funds that have empowered so many girls’ educational projects around the world.
The Message of Hope written by and put in the baton by Jalila and Zayed:
“The shining light that is Tracy Edwards and the Maiden’s Crew have continued forward through times of crushing struggle and hardship to so clearly demonstrate that truly; ‘with faith, honour and courage anything is possible’. Their journey will remain an incomparable inspiration and a message of hope for all now and forever on. We hope for a world guided by the principles of peace, respect, and dignity for each other, and our planet. Maiden will always remain a lighthouse for all those who share the values that she embodies.”
Each crew member on Maiden will have reflected on their amazing achievements during the race, not only the life-long friendships they’ve made, the extreme conditions they faced, the experiences, and skills they have honed while racing around the world – all in the footsteps of the first ever all-female crew of Maiden, skippered by Tracy Edwards MBE in the 89/90 Whitbread Round The World Race.
The late King Hussein believed in then-21-year-old Tracy and provided the sponsorship which turned her dream into reality. Princess Haya was 12 when she first met Tracy and had grown up hearing stories about Maiden and what she had achieved from her father. In 2017 she in turn stepped in to make Maiden’s restoration possible, and history repeated itself as her children, who were 10 and 5 years old, learned about Maiden’s story and her quest to make a difference in the world; the iconic yacht would sail around the world again with an all-female crew, this time with a mission of raising awareness and funds for girls’ education.
