“So, you’re going back to England tonight, and you’ll spend the next three days pretending you two are the closest and best of friends until we can put this mess behind us.” And there are reasons he hasn’t told anybody this, good reasons, even though he’s sure June and Nora saw through him ages ago. Faced with his mom’s disappointment, though, and with the realization that the entire world apparently thinks he hates Henry and would willingly shove him into a fucking cake, he can’t stay quiet. “But we are friends,” he says, vehement and serious. “We have been for years. He’s—he’s probably my best friend, actually, along with Nora.”

The entire world has it on video. Alex stumbling forward, straight into Henry’s shoulder, knocking him back into the table and then crumbling to the ground, the cake falling on top of them. Everyone thinks Alex was drunk, or that he hates him, or that he’s immature or unfit for his title, but none of it’s the truth. Everyone’s acting like it’s the end of the world regardless. And maybe, for Alex, it kind of is.

Alex hasn’t noticed before. Not in all the months he’s been coming here, ever since it opened: flirting with the outrageously hot bartender who doesn’t offer a menu and instead sits down and introduces himself to his customers, talks to them about what they like to drink, and then pulls something together based on their specific tastes. Not tonight, when he came without June or Nora, never straying from his barstool, letting Henry mix him a few drinks over the course of the evening, all of them different and all of them, inevitably, perfect. Not when he was teasingly comparing the high-brow cocktails to college body shots and claiming that there wasn’t any difference, just to see the flash in Henry’s eyes as he’d argued. Not after last call, when he’d stayed where he was as the speakeasy emptied around them, fingers circling the rim of his long-empty glass, and Henry had let him.

Or, Henry is a speakeasy bartender, and Alex is the surface for body shots. Then they fuck about it. That's the fic.
