i feel like most heartbreak high critisms are based on wanting perfect people and the show has been clear about this being characters that are all flawed, they're humans.

there's messy miscommunications, there's selfishness and there's teenage stupidity.

they're not static, they learn about some things and get better about those, but might drop the ball on things they were good at previously bcs their focus has been taken away.

but teenagers are messy and get caught up in emotions all the fucking time. it's not surprising? like is it just me ? bcs it feels like most commentary i have seen on the show are missing that

The bit where everyone takes Quinni to the zoo is so well done. Right from the start of that but we see how uncomfortable Quinni is, and see why she’s hurting before she says anything. Ca$h notices when her best friend doesn’t seem to.

But yeah, when they invite her to the zoo, she doesn’t seem to want to be there, at no point do they ask what she wants, they just assume she’ll appreciate it even though we know she hates plan changes. As an autistic person, I imagine she’s similar to me with things being sprung on her, so it would make sense that she’s already stressed out. Having someone else make plans for me and then do a surprise thing for my birthday would honestly freak me out no matter how well intentioned.

The whole way around it becomes obvious that they’re doing this to try and make themselves feel better, not Quinni. They say they’re going for her, but they immediately leave her behind at the entrance, running off and chatting. With every exhibit they visit, she’s always the last one to leave which represents very concisely her fear of being left behind.

She even asks at one point what she’s missed and she’s brushed off by Darren, the one person who has always been understanding. It’s not done maliciously but it’s dismissive at best.

She then later expresses her fear of being left, explaining that she hates change and feels that no one is giving her a chance to keep up, and the whole zoo trip represents that so well. It makes sense that no one sees how stressed she is because they’re all so excited about the next thing they just don’t see her.

WITH THAT SAID ,

being completely honest , i feel like the allistic ppl who started disliking quinni after the whole unmasking thing only liked her when they could infantilize her as the poor little autistic girl who needed to be protected n then switched up on her the moment she did something 'wrong'

wrong being a big word in this case bc yea she didnt go abt it in the best way possible BUT she was literally trying to make a point !! darren told her if 'playing by everyone else's rules' (= masking) was so hard to just stop n quinni did exactly that ! she stopped masking ! n yes she was a little mean at times but that wasn't bc she was unmasking n it wasn't bc the writers wanted to portray unmasking as something 'selfish' or bad (guess where i read that ass take yea ofc it was fuckass tiktok) it was bc she was mad !

quinni was hurt n when she tried to communicate why all she got was a 'the world cant always play by ur rules' n if theres one thing ik as an autistic person is that having ur words twisted n being accused of being self centered just bc u express any kind of discomfort or complaint with whats going in ur life hurts in a very specific way n its so hard to get over it like quinni took it wayyy better than she could've

also a lot of the other characters have done way worse things but when quinni does one immature thing (mind u shes a high schooler she is going to be immature in some way or another at some point) suddenly shes the worst friend ever to darren like bffr
