April is killing me, mentally, emotionally, and financially. I make a grand total of $2200 a month. I do get an extra paycheck this month thanks to the way the calendar lines up, so $3300.
April 1 ofc starts with my $1300 rent (cannot wait til my lease is up). At $2000.
I owe $800 in taxes. At $1200.
My cats just had surgery. Low cost clinic, still cost $200. At $1000.
Add in the usual bills, car insurance, rent insurance, internet, electricity, student loan, phone bill, etc. Takes me down to roughly $500.
I had my shipment of cat litter this month (3 month supply), which takes $160 (don't come at me for the price, it's the only litter my pretentious little shits will use. Anything else they'll piss and shit on the floor next to them). That's $340.
The cat food I bought made my cats sick. Had to throw out the $20 bag I got (gave to my mom, her chickens love it) bought a new bag for $30. $310.
Just found out that my insurance no longer covers dental. I have 2 cavities. Basically had to get additional dental insurance just to fix this issue. The first time payment was $90. There's $220 left.
On Tuesday (2 days ago) I'm sitting at work, I have DND on my door because I'm editing video and need to focus. My coworker barges in and starts demanding I do something that isn't part of my job nor do I even know how to do it. Informs me that I'm not entitled to have DND on ever. She could've at least knocked. She scared tf out of me just forcing her way in.
I find out that she's been telling higher ups that I sit in my office and sleep/play video games, which I do neither of. Maybe if I'm clocked out on lunch I'll play some games on my phone. But I'm not on the clock. She's putting my job at risk with her lies.
She also told me I needed to see a psychiatrist and gave me a business card. I'm not in the market for a psychiatrist. Never have been, never said i was. She said it's clear I need to be put on medication.
The Watcher thing happened.
I come home work after the thing with my coworker to find a note on my door. Leasing office is doing inspections today (Thursday). I'm dead in the middle of spring cleaning and my apartment looks like a mess. + my cats are recovering from surgery. I'm just waiting for an inadequate housekeeping charge or something to come onto my account. Plus they're checking blinds and will replace broken ones at a cost to me. I know one needs replaced bc my one cat ripped them up. Additional $35. At $185. And we all know that $185 is gonna go to feeding me, with the bare minimum.
Oh and 2 of my moms cats were stolen and there's no information on where they went. So they're just gone.

I'm a little curious to see how long it'll be before a new video is uploaded to YouTube. I'm assuming they'll post the next vid on the streamer, and then it'll go up in a month on YT.
I don't know but if I had never seen Watcher but came across one of their videos as suggested content, watched it, liked it, and went to their channel to see what else they got...I'd be a little put off by their last 2 videos being titled "Goodbye YouTube" and "An Update". Like my first thought would be like crap, guess I can watch old content but there won't be anything new. Just a dead Fandom.
Personally I'd put the next video they do on YouTube immediately, just to show potential new fans that they are still doing videos because there's no guarantee they're gonna watch the update and be like oh OK I'll sub. Or they do watch and think "so it's going to be dead for a whole month unless I pay for their streamer? Eh, not worth my time."
They’ve done it.
WATCHER IS BACK ON YOUTUBE.
Ok, seasons will reassess like a month early then get on YouTube.
They fuckin listened guys.

One of the grossest things about this watcher controversy to me is that they BUILT so much of their channel based on their fans. The ghost stories at the beginning of ghost files, the stories for are you scared and too many spirits....not to mention that their original base of viewers followed them to the new channel based on the good will they had built up at BuzzFeed. It feels like they're saying thanks for all the content and passion and then slamming the door in everyone's faces.

My landlord does quarterly inspections on all the apartments and they ALWAYS do it at the WORST times for me. I'm of course never home when they do them, because I have a day job. So I just get to be sitting at work while strangers are in my home.
Meanwhile my cats just got fixed 2 days ago. The last thing they need is people coming in and out making messes/loud noises. All of their toys and cat trees and scratches are moved because I don't want them jumping or playing too much and tear open their stitches.
Plus part of the inspection is just making sure you're actually keeping the place clean. I got the letter right in the middle of my spring cleaning. So my apartment looks like a mess because I'm going through my stuff deciding on what to get rid of. I have books sitting everywhere that I'm sorting. Clothes are tossed around because I have made 3 piles: what I'm keeping, what I'm donating, what I'm not sure about.
It's a literal shitshow in here and I guarantee they are going to add some bs charge to my account. "The apartment is dirty and unkempt" excuse you, besides the spring cleaning, there's not a crumb on the floor, a speck of dust anywhere. It's a little cluttered because I have so many knick knacks, but it's clean. Yall just happened to decide to do this at the literal worst time.

And with the amount of people who didn't even KNOW they had a Patreon, they probably could have done something more to get people to actually pay for that rather than skipping every other step and going straight to "yall get nothing but teasers unless you pay us money and everyone can afford it even though that's not even the slightest bit true"
"Omg y'all are babies who don't realize that they need to make money and just feel entitled to free art!"
First of all I think most Watcher fans will agree that nobody asked for "TV quality" content. In fact I personally find most of their new shows to be extremely overproduced compared to their Buzzfeed era videos, which were backed by an actual big company. So them blowing their budget on new staff and fancy sets is something few people asked for.
"But this is their art and their company and they're allowed to make it however they want, they can't just constantly make their old stuff to retain an audience!"
I mean, yeah, if this is what they want to keep making, more power to them! But people are not obligated to 1) enjoy it and 2) pay for it. Audiences will fluctuate. Look at the Try Guys and how much their stuff has changed while still being successful. So maybe they'll get a new audience that is willing to pay for the stuff they want to make. But it's perfectly understandable for a large portion of their old fans to leave. Cuz yeah. If you wanna say "um this is capitalism sweaty" then yeah, I'll agree with you. This is capitalism. And I have better things to spend money on. I am not entitled to their art, and they are not entitled to my money. If they stop making stuff I like and have access to, I will stop watching. Taste closed.

Can we have another option. "Only if there are at least a couple of shows that are free on YouTube". I know some creators paywall most of their series and do up two six months delays on Patreon. That's why it baffles me that they outright abandoned 99% of their fandom when there were other options
I mean, with our luck we'd probably only get the "not as popular shows" for free on YouTube. With a few exceptions, the food related content does not get as many views as the more popular ones like Mystery/Ghost Files, Are You Scared...honestly the ones with Ryan and Shane are the most popular and would likely get the proverbial axe of free.
Like, oh, some content is free, yes! But not the ones the majority of you want to actually watch. For those, you need to pay us.
Put content up sooner behind a paywall, be that a day, a week, or a full month then release it with ads for free. Offer bonus content behind the paywall that's not given for free, such as behind the scenes, additional episodes, podcasts, etc. Offer bonuses to those who pay for the streamer/patreon, kind of like what Mythical does with the Quarterly Item. And of course, actually promote the fact that they have this option.

I pop on a playlist to kinda have going on in the background when I'm working. It's Ryan and Shane's banter and dynamic that I'm here for at this point. Ngl I love Are You Scared (every ep has been added to my sleepy time playlist), Too Many Spirits is funny af.
I was super excited for Mystery and Ghost Files - I mean I've been a fan since bfu days. I knew they obviously couldn't do the exact same thing as bfu, but something similar. I thought the intros were pretty cool but, like especially with ghost files, I can't stand the like "Avengers Tony Stark using hologram tech" stuff to show the blueprint. Is it really necessary? And Ryan pretty much repeats the exact same thing every episode in terms of what they're gonna do. It's too much and quite frankly, it's boring.
If there's anything I learned from fans these past few days, we're really just here to listen to Ryan and Shane banter back and forth about ghosts, demons, murderers, and aliens.
ive been seeing some people deride others as childish or whatever for being like "ghost/mystery files wasnt as good as buzzfeed unsolved" calling it "sour grapes", but i watched a video talkin abt the watcher thing just now (by stateofmoregon) where she points out that, when youve been receiving something for free, and u suddenly have to pay for it, it forces you to think about whether or not you actually like that thing—if it's worth paying for, if you only liked it before because it was free. which i think is a good point. it's not that people are suddenly denying they ever liked ghost/mystery files, its that many of us are being forced to reexamine whether or not ghost/mystery files is something we actually enjoy or if we were just taking it because it was free, and many of us are deciding that no, we never really did enjoy it on the same level as buzzfeed unsolved
i know that i personally havent even watched a ghost/mystery files episode in some time bc every time a new one popped up in my feed i just felt apathetic about it, none of the excitement i used to feel about new bfu eps. and i realized a while ago that ive only really been forcing myself to watch new ones out of the hope that maybe this time itll have the same charm as bfu did. so i really dont think its fair to say its "sour grapes". a lot of people are just being forced to reckon with feelings that theyve had for a while but just never bothered to acknowledge because hey, its free.

1 quick way Watcher could've avoided the entire fiasco that was Friday-Monday:
Put up a poll.
Watchers, how would you feel about us moving all of our content to a streaming service for a fee?
YES GREAT IDEA I CANT WAIT TO SUB
Depends on price
No, I would not subscribe
Only if all/most content is still free on YouTube
Or something to that effect. No sudden goodbye video that pissed off every fan. No tiktoks, reddit threads, tumblr posts tearing them apart for making this decision. No reaction videos on YouTube. No one attacking anyone. They wouldn't have lost thousands of subscribers on YouTube. Fans wouldn't feel alienated enough that they can't continue watching and are now finding other creators with similar content. The comment section would have alternative suggestions, mentioning patreon and that many fans didn't even know they had a patreon, so they should push for that more, etc.
One poll could have saved everyone a lot of time, energy, and grief.

“Artists need to be paid for their work!”
Agreed however they ARE getting paid!! If Patreon+ ad revenue+ merch sales + tour sales isn’t enough to cover the cost of the videos Watcher has been putting out, maybe the answer is to downsize and scale back instead of punishing their audience for their poor financial decisions.

My dad is a wild conspiracy theorist and he has been going nonstop about chem trails in the sky. He will run outside and film it, ranting complete nonsense. It's literally just like plane exhaust, he lives a few miles away from an small airport.
He always responds with "no planes are scheduled to fly this way from that airport" or something.
It's probably fucking Taylor Swift he's seeing

"We messed up." - @wearewatcher
Yes boys, you did. I appreciate the backtracking and reevaluating. Hopefully this model works out.
Though personally, I feel now the watcher tv site is pointless. It costs money to maintain a site and a domain. Why not just get rid of the site, and push more for patreon subscribers? And just make the content on patreon what you will be doing on watchertv? Just my take. Just my take.
As someone who has been a fan of the boys since the beginning of Buzzfeed Unsolved when Ryan was doing his little PowerPoint presentations and reading from a single sheet of printer paper, this entire Watcher fiasco is insane and was definitely not on my 2024 bingo card.
Back when Ryan and Shane announced that they were leaving Buzzfeed to start their own entertainment company with Steven, I was excited! I wanted to see what new, fun, interesting, and creative content they would put out without Buzzfeed holding them back. I'm a huge fan of Mystery and Ghost Files, Puppet History, Are You Scared?, Too Many Spirits, Top 5 Beatdown. Loved Spooky Small Talk before it was scrapped. I watched every new ep that came out, even the ones I didn't like that much like Steven's food ones, and liked and commented because I wanted to support them as much as possible. I rewatch all my favorite episodes. I have a dedicated playlist of Ryan and Shane content because it helps me fall asleep at night. When I didn't have much I at least had Watcher to keep my smile on my face and continuous laughter going when I didn't feel much like going on.
I got the notification 3 days ago about a new Watcher video and was stunned at what I saw. Sure I can watch episode 1 of new shows and watch some trailers, but I'm gonna have to sub to yet another streaming service to watch anything more. A streaming service that doesn't even have an app, so if I want to add anything to my sleep playlist, I'm gonna have to leave my phone on all night.
Anyways, I immediately went and checked the boys' socials and see what they posted for any additional info. Thousands upon thousands of negative comments all saying basically the same thing:
I can't afford $6/month/not everyone has $6 laying around, and it can really make or break someone financially.
Been a fan since Unsolved, guess I'm not a watcher anymore.
This is a bad move.
From what I've seen across reddit, Twitter, tiktok, Instagram, and Tumblr, the negative far outweigh the positive. The only "positive" comments I've seen haven't really been "oh this is a great idea! I'm gonna go sub right now!!" It's really been more, "well it's their business, they can do what they want with it." Or simply bashing other people because they cannot afford $6 a month or $60 a year, which really comes off as boomer ideology. You know, the old "if millennials would stop eating avocado toast or buying Starbucks maybe they can afford a house!" While completely ignoring the global economic crisis we are all facing. It's completely out of check with the fact that there's so many of us not just in America, but in the world who are barely living paycheck to paycheck. That there are so many people who WISH they could get a Starbucks coffee in the morning but often times have to skip meals because they cannot afford food if they want to keep a roof over their heads, you know the ridiculous amount of money that we spend to rent a small space. Never gonna forget the one apartment I looked at that was $800 a month, no utilities included, no parking, no pets allowed, and I could lay flat on the ground and have my 5'4" length reach comfortably in every single room. Wasn't even a kitchen or room for a single size bed (mild tangent rant, I now pay $1300 for a 2 bedroom apartment, most utilities included, but bad parking)
And for Steven to say that anyone can afford $6 is just so factually wrong. Has anyone checked the foreign exchange rate for $6? Some threads I've seen on Reddit are insane. For some people 6 USD translates to someone's entire rent or a week's worth of food. If I recall the comment correctly, one person said that in their country, Netflix comes out to $2 USD, and is considered a luxury item that only the upper class/wealthy have.
Maybe I'm just being bitter. Maybe I'm just overreacting to a piece of content I loved and cherished being pushed behind a paywall. It just feels like a slap in the face to fans who have spent countless hours soaking in their content, recommending them to friends, making new friends over a shared interest, and now feeling like they didn't matter at all. That we were just dollar signs. To hear them going from thanking dedicated fans for helping them get to where they are to but now you gotta give us more money if you want to keep being fans and now we are going to ignore your backlash just feels disingenuous and heartbreaking.
