WOMEN OF MYTHOLOGY  |  Circe, The Sorceress ( poem )
Circe was the goddess of magic in Greek mythology who resided on the island of Aeaea. She was said to be the daughter of the underworld goddess Hecate (in some accounts she was said to be the daughter of the ocean nymph Perse) and the sun titan Helios, and was skilled in illusionism, the dark arts of necromancy, and most famously in the magic of metamorphosis.
She is most famously remembered in the Odyssey in which Odysseus and his men, while returning home from the Trojan war, stumbled upon her island. Once his men came across her palace, overrun with tamed beasts, Circe invited them to dine and drink with her. Only the food was enchanted as such that all of the men (save Odysseus who had remained on the ship) were turned into beasts themselves. Odysseus was aided by the god Hermes who gave him a herb which would protect him from Circe’s enchantments. Once he arrived at the palace, he threatened the sorceress to return all his men to mortal form, which she did. In peace, Circe offered the men entertainment and rest upon the island which they accepted and prolonged their stay for a whole year upon her island.
