Kunstenbibliotheek shows artist's books curated by Katia Ballegeer 02.07.2018 – 01.09.2018

The Kunstenbibliotheek unites the libraries of the KASK, S.M.A.K, Design museum Gent, HISK, STAM and Gentse Gidsen under one roof and is managed by the KASK (School of Arts / HoGent). The collection of artists' books, special editions, and limited editions of the library, forms a synergy between the artists' books of the KASK and the S.M.A.K. Both of these collections offer a wide spectrum ranging from inexpensive publications, to limited editions, and multiples. For this exhibition, the Kunstenbibliotheek shows a selection from 1948 to 2016. With works by Raoul De Keyser, Sol LeWitt, Carl André, Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven, William Kentridge, Lucebert, Werner Cuvelier, and Kasper Andreasen, among others.

De Kunstenbibliotheek brengt de collecties van KASK, S.M.A.K., Design Museum Gent, STAM, HISK en de Gentse Gidsen samen onder één dak, en staat onder beheer van het KASK (School of Arts / HoGent). De collectie kunstenaarsboeken, speciale edities en beperkte oplagen van de Kunstenbibliotheek, vormt een synergie tussen de kunstenaarsboeken van het KASK en het S.M.A.K. Deze beide collecties bieden een breed spectrum gaande van goedkope uitgaven, tot gelimiteerde oplagen en multiples. Kunstenbibliotheek toont een selectie van 1948 tot 2016. Er is werk te zien van onder andere Raoul De Keyser, Sol LeWitt, Carl André, Stanley Brouwn, Hanne Darboven  William Kentridge, Lucebert, Werner Cuvelier en Kasper Andreasen.

Flip – About Image Construction  curated by Kasper Andreasen 03.03.2018 – 22.03.2018

Photos (installation views): Rachel Gruijters & Jan Kempenaers Flip was the sequel to the exhibition Copy Construct held at CC Mechelen in 2017. The exhibition focused on displaying a temporary archive of artists’ books parallel to about a dozen filmic works. The term ‘flip’ associatively refers to the performative gesture of leafing through a book but also to notions of image sequences, reversal (printing), the flipbook, as well as the use of text and images in books and video works. The exhibition was a way of showing these media together, emphasizing the use of narrative strategies and image construction as extensions of each other.

Alongside 13 video and film works in the exhibition, books from the art library’s collection were shown as well as selections by 4 book collectors and publishers, who had been invited for the occasion. The exhibition’s scenography was conceived by Kris Kimpe & Koenraad Dedobbeleer. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, designed by 6m56s and published by Art Paper Editions. The catalogue contains complete bibliography of the displayed books and films. Flip was het vervolg op de tentoonstelling Copy Construct, die in maart 2017 in CC Mechelen plaatsvond. Ze brengt een tijdelijk archief van kunstenaarsboeken samen met een aantal filmische werken. Het begrip ‘flip’ verwijst enerzijds naar de fysieke handeling van het lezen van een boek, en anderzijds naar zaken als beeldsequenties, omgekeerd afdrukken, het flipboek, alsook naar het afwisselend gebruik van beelden en tekst in videowerk en boeken respectievelijk. De tentoonstelling was een poging om deze media samen te tonen, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de wederzijdse beïnvloeding van narratieve strategieën en beeldende constructies.

Naast de 13 video- en filmwerken die in tentoonstelling te zien zijn, worden kunstenaarsboeken uit de collectie van de Kunstenbibliotheek getoond en de selecties van 4 boekenverzamelaars en uitgevers, die voor deze gelegenheid werden uitgenodigd. De scenografie van de tentoonstelling was in handen van Kris Kimpe & Koenraad Dedobbeleer. De tentoonstelling us vergezeld van een uitgebreide catalogus vormgegeven door 6m56s, en door Art Paper Editions uitgegeven. De catalogus bevat een complete bibliografie van de getoonde boeken en films.

The Swiss artist, author, and curator Stefan Banz has authored and edited a prodigious number of books over the last decade, on contemporary artists, curators and theorists such as Jeff Wall and Friedrich Kittler, as well as historical figures – including most recently Louis Michel Eilshemius, a now largely forgotten painter whom Marcel Duchamp ‘discovered’ in the early 1920s in New York. Duchamp features prominently in Banz’s published oeuvre, particularly the artist’s last work, Étant donnés, the panoramic three-dimensional portrait of a female nude set in a bucolic setting. Banz has firmly established this setting as the area of the Forestay Waterfall, in Switzerland. To mark Duchamp’s attachment to this landscape, Banz and his wife Caroline Bachmann opened in 2009 the world’s “smallest” museum, the KMD–Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp | The Forestay Museum of Art, in Cully, near Lausanne.

Stefan Banz co-founded in 1989 the first Kunsthalle Luzern and served as its artistic director until 1993. From 1994 to 1997 he was an artistic advisor for the Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Zurich. He curated several major shows internationally and was the curator of the Swiss pavilion in 2005 at the Venice Biennale. As an artist, he has exhibited in various international museums and galleries including the Württembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart), the Migros Museum for Gegenwartskunst (Zurich), the Museum Schloss Moyland (the Beuys Museum near Cleves, Germany), and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis).

These covers use only typography and colour. No lettering, no collages, no images, no drawings, no lines, no patterns, no ornaments, no special effects. With text never longer than a few words, they still manage to generate tension and catch the eye. They were not opened during the selection process because you can judge a book by its cover.

This the is first display selected from the recently combined artists’ book collections of KASK and S.M.A.K. for the new Kunstenbibliotheek. It is also the first in a series of 1m3 displays organised by Curatorial Studies. See kaskbooks.tumblr.com

In 2016, the KASK library received a parcel from Russia.The package contained two books and an accompanying letter. It turned out to be a donation. The mother of the author asked to include the books in the library collection. The letter suggested that the author of the books had died. Research revealed that the mother had sent the books to libraries all over the world and some libraries (Princeton, Columbia University, …) had actually included the books in their collection. The KASK library decided not to accept the books. The books were thereupon offered to students for free. Nobody wanted them. The 1m3 display-window gives an account of the investigation into the background of the donation.

In 2016 kreeg de bibliotheek van KASK een zending uit Rusland. In de enveloppe zaten twee boeken en een begeleidende brief. Het bleek een schenking te zijn. De moeder van de auteur vroeg om de boeken in de collectie op te nemen. De brief suggereerde dat de auteur overleden is. Speurwerk leert dat de moeder de boeken naar bibliotheken over de hele wereld stuurde en dat sommige bibliotheken (Princeton, Columbia University, …) de boeken ook effectief opnamen in hun collectie. De bibliotheek van KASK besloot de boeken niet op te nemen. De boeken werden vervolgens aangeboden aan studenten: wie ze wilde hebben, mocht ze meenemen. Niemand wilde de boeken. In de 1m3 etalage wordt speurwerk naar de achtergrond van de schenking getoond.

Four equal sides and angles: a square. Only two equal lengths: a rectangle. Tilt it to the right: a parallelogram. Return to the square, pull out the lower corners to form a skirt: a trapezoid. Return to the square once more, tilt it on an angle, give it a vertical squeeze: a rhombus. Push the top a bit more: a kite. Now give each side a random push: an irregular!

This selection of books was made by Gudlaug Mia Eythorsdottir in the context of Sara De Bondt’s master seminar 'Graphic Design for Contemporary Art’, October to December 2016.

The book is a typographic space. The book is written, typeset, printed, and bound (to the rules of typography). The book contains words of truth, wisdom, and knowledge. The book is a manageable custodian of words. The book has become a word. The book is a resolution of matter. The book is a substance of beingness. The book is a paper dam against the digital storm. The book is a humane luxury in harsh times.

Het boek is een typografische ruimte. Het boek is geschreven, gezet, gedrukt, gebonden (aan de wetten van de typografie). Het boek bevat woordelijke waarheid, wijsheid en kennis. Het boek is een handzame letterbewaarder. Het boek is woord geworden. Het boek is een besluit van stof. Het boek is stof van zijn. Het boek is een papieren dam tegen de digitale storm. Het boek is humane luxe in barre tijden.

Since 2010, the master students of the photography department work together with the Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem. All the publications are created from an intensive collaboration between students from both schools. The classic conventions of the photography book which were previously used are called into question during the cooperation with the students. This has allowed innovative and eclectic forms to come into being which can play an interesting role for future photography books. The students present the publications during their master jury, afterwards they are mostly spread by themselves. The print runs vary greatly and are usually dependent on the budget of the students. Some of the books are kept in the photography department and can be consulted there in the lending service.

Sinds 2010 werkt de afdeling fotografie samen met de Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem. Al de publicaties komen tot stand vanuit een intensieve samenwerking tussen de studenten van beide scholen. De klassieke conventies van het fotoboek, die voordien door de studenten werden gehanteerd, worden tijdens deze samenwerking in vraag gesteld. Hierdoor komen er vernieuwende en eclectische vormen tot stand, die een interessante rol kunnen spelen voor toekomstige fotoboeken. De studenten presenteren de publicaties tijdens hun masterjury, daarna worden ze grotendeels door henzelf verspreid. De oplagen variëren sterk, ze zijn meestal afhankelijk van het budget van de studenten zelf. Een deel van de boeken worden in de afdeling fotografie bewaard en zijn daar te raadplegen bij de uitleendienst.
