End of semester party: Some guy decides that the way to swoon the ladies was to show off his new gun. No shooting injuries, as it was fortunately unloaded, but the TV got destroyed by the ensuing "You can't be doing that" tussle. My boyfriend at the time turned to me and very firmly said, "Find Dan, we're leaving."
4th of July party: Watched a man shoot wildly at a truck being driven by a man who had just run over a third man who had been doing the "just give me your keys bro, you can sleep it off here" speech. Shooting man did not hit drunk driving man, but he did hit a girl hiding behind a tree and the host's dog. That was also the first time I saw someone's bones be outside of them (key wrangler man). My friend and his girlfriend immediately physically shoved me in the back of their car, and I was back home before the cops arrived.
Random Saturday night: Sitting at the best food truck in town, one of my long-time friends pulls back his suit jacket and reveals his gun. Confesses that he always feels scared, and that's why he carries it everywhere. We have a long talk about mental health. There were no injuries, but it definitely changed the tone of our friendship. He did not decide to get help at that time.
Random Tuesday night: One of my girl friends calls me. She's packing a bag to leave her boyfriend. He's outside the bedroom, slamming on the door, begging her to stay between threats of violence. I, being an idiot who never expected to live that long anyway, go over to help her. The apartment is unlocked, so I let myself in. He points his gun at me and tells me to leave. I do something stupid. Me and her get out alive. The only damage from the gun is from where he slammed it into the drywall. She's too scared to call the cops. I have an accurate understanding of both how fucking stupid and how stupid lucky I am.
Random Friday night: I go to a local punk show. It's inside someone's house. This plays out almost identical to the end of semester party, but the gun was loaded. Idk if there are casualties because my friend caught wind of things ahead of time. I see the gun as we're on our way out of the house. We hear gunshots when we're a block away and walking to our car. Friend calls his ambulance driver buddies to report hearing shots fired. We go to Denny's and don't talk for a couple hours.
purpose of this poll: basically im wondering if my gran having a pistol was a typical american experience

(for the purposes of this poll, there is no monkey's paw situation: the chore you pick stays the same level of difficulty/grossness/etc. as it normally is for you, and you only have to do it as often as you want to. the chores you don't pick are magically done for you exactly the way you'd want them to be, just with zero effort on your part.)

A year ago I got really into Some Place Under Neith. They focused on less told true crime stories. They highlighted the higher rates of victimization of BIPOC women, the ways that social media culture has harmed children (in general, and via family bloggers/vloggers abusing their kids for clicks), etc.
But I was catching up on episodes recently and Natalie Jean said something that well and truly rubbed me the wrong way.
She said that everyone who uses Signal is a pedophile. She said it so firmly. She said that if you found out someone had the Signal app on their phone that this was a red flag, and insinuated that they should be reported.
You know who uses Signal? Protest organizers. Journalists. People doing work to improve society somewhat, in ways that the oligarchs and their lackeys don't necessarily approve of. I have Signal. My BLM/Free Palestine/etc. protest friends have Signal.
Beyond people who have concerns about privacy, it's also used by people who just want certain things from an interface. I'm cutting this bit short because I'm not sponsored, but literally just a quick Google will tell you what's up.
The blanket statement, like many blanket statements, was most likely said out of being misinformed/uninformed. But if you're hosting a show that has thousands of listeners, maybe do a quick Google search (or even Bing) before saying the only reason this app that provides secure messaging would ever be on someone's phone is because they wanna fuck kids. Before you (unintentionally or not) equate activists with csam peddlers.

You mean I can spend the same amount of time traveling as I would on planes, but without a layover that has me staring at bronze busts of dead CEOs in some airport for six hours?
“Nobody’s going to want to sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours to get from New York City to LA.”
Me. I will sit on high-speed rail for fifteen hours. I’ll sit on it for days. I’ll write and read and nap and eat and then do it all over again. I’ll stare out the windows and see America from ground level and not have to drive. I’ll see the Rockies and the deserts and cornfields and the Mississippi River and your house and yours and yours too. I’ll make up stories in my head about the small towns I see as we go along. I’ll see the states I’ve yet to see because driving or flying there is a fucking slog and expensive to boot. I’ll enjoy the ride as much as the destination. And then I’ll do it all over again to come the fuck home.

Please go watch Sex Explained on Netflix. Not only is it a great resource for the basic sex education that is sorely lacking in the U.S., but some of ya’ll need to take a deep breath and remember the difference between fantasy vs reality. This purity culture thing that we’re going through right now is directly harmful to responsible, healthy sexual expression. BTW this woman, Lisa Diamond, is a noted psychologist and has been pushing for greater understanding of womens sexuality as a whole.

My reading experience, in 7 parts:
I read the title as "cart wheels"
Why would cartwheels cost $300? You can just do them for free?
I mean I wouldn't do cartwheels inside, but if you have the space whatever I guess.
Is this a non-native English speaker? This whole cartwheel business is giving Google translate.
Salt? Snacks?
Clapping?
Finally, reached the "idiot son" part, re-read the title, and achieved reading comprehension, the likes of which tumblr has never seen the likes of which

It's so annoying that my client who has the vim and vigor to get the mean, bordering on outright cruel, other overnighter fired is also the client who literally can't keep straight what year they were born, names of staff, or whether something happened yesterday or six months ago.
