It's that time of year again: the Anti-Romance Jam is back!

From 20 May 2024 to 22 July 2024, the 2024 Anti-Romance Jam will be open for submissions exploring the concept of anti-romance: what is it? how does it work? where's the line between anti-romance and romance?

You decide! This extra-long jam is meant to explore all the messy spaces and sensations that exist around and against romance, whatever that means to you.

The song not on Esme’s Playlist is Everybody Wants to Love You by Japanese Breakfast! Explanation with an allergy to conciseness below cut!

The song starts off as a "aw man I wanna sleep with that hottie!" and then opens up to reveal the singer's desire for soft, domestic, nonsexual intimacy with said hottie. It really looks and sounds like a cynical Esme song or something one of her admirers would sing about her, but the core reason it isn't on her playlist is that it's on her former patron's for all the people viewing her as an object of physical desire, the thing that is wanted isn't her, it's her persona.

Esme is aware of this - leaning into said persona is what's kept her alive and in control of what power she has as her own. She knows what people see when they look at her and what they want to see: Esme's entire life revolves around delivering and playing the role that gets her what she wants.

A very long time ago, she thought that love compared to power was a useless currency, so she abandoned her investments in it. How unfortunate for her to discover that perhaps she has a very useless, very inconvenient yearning for it still. Am I realising right this very second that actually it fits on a ship playlist for her? No one look at my Spotify for a second

Take Me to War by The Crane Wives is a throwback honestly, it was added onto Esme's playlist in the Early Days of her character building and it really sums up why so many if her decisions are motivated by long-suffering, stubborn anger. She has huge ambitions and claws her way into achieving them no matter the cost, but where Esme finds herself is pressed up against glass ceilings of many species, in a position of power that is limited by the exact same sacrifices she made to get there. Girliepop gridlocks herself and this song really hits the vein of her slow, furious realization of what she's done.

Also the verse starting "dress me in red and throw your roses" just tickles me. That's her colour and motif, and in her original setting she has no weapons other than words (and fake fire magic). Esme is fundamentally somebody pretending to be something she isn't, and no matter how good she is at it or how close she gets, it's never the same as Being That Thing.

Man, you guys are good at this. XD Love Crime is indeed not on Pandora's playlist. It's an excellent song, but at its heart, the singer has a determination to play the game and win, to become victorious by embracing monstrosity instead of resisting it. Pandora did that once - maybe twice - and it's not really her playstyle anymore!
