Troika: Black Dust #1-5, 2013 

Soot on Somerset paper  76 x 56 cm 

In the ‘Black Dust’ series the dense black particles deposited on the paper trace the pattern of the air flow in gradations from dark to light. Soot particles generated from cheap paraffin candles are passed over objects that have been placed on white paper.

The layering of the surface is three-dimensional in its density, but can be carried away on your breath.  

Following their series of drawings with electric discharge, ‘Black Dust’ reveals the natural patterns of soot combustion and convection to produce a definitive mark. The results are reminiscent of primordial states of matter, the dense black and white evoking quantum states of energy. 

With these works, in a time where everything is in constant flux, where computers allow us to retrace and erase our steps, there is no possibility of erasing, thus the necessity of considering if another step should be taken. 

‘Black Dust’ was premiered at OMR as one of 5 new works shown in Troika’s solo exhibtion ‘The far side of reason’ in April 2013.

American visual artist Pae White is a multi-media artist who frequently creates large-scale installations in a variety of media, from tapestry to ceramics to tinfoil. Notable for her unusual use of space, White’s work has been featured in a range of non-exhibition spaces including the bookshop window at Galerie Buchholz and a children’s learning area at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Of the concept behind her work, White has said: “For the last several years, my practice has focused on an exploration of the neglected, the forgotten, the spaces between things, even the things between things. I am equally drawn to the temporary, the fleeting, to the ephemera of everyday life. My work has attempted to subvert the viewer’s expected relationship to an everyday object, nudging them off balance, encouraging a deeper look.”

Read (2008) - Pakistani Artist HAMRA ABBAS

Read is a multi-media installation, a suspended labyrinth-like wooden structure, concealing speakers playing the sound of children reciting the Qur’an as they memorize its verses, the standard method of instruction in Pakistan’s madrassahs. The title of the work comes from the command that the prophet Mohammad was said to have been given by God when the Qur’an was revealed to him. Abbas has structured the work so that the viewer must walk through the labyrinth, close to the speakers, offering them an immersive experience of the work. In Read the cacophony of sound filtering through the speakers, of children reciting the Qur’anic verses, is not the orderly regimented harmony that might be expected. Indeed, the chaotic babble is reminiscent of the sounds of a large number of noisy children gathered together anywhere in the world. - HA
