[location: the tavern]
atom was bothered by all the events that evening. however, he’d been more annoyed with the townsfolk rather than the actual events that happened at the theatre. when everyone had gotten up to run, they’d all run right past him and created a barrier in front of the door as they all tried to escape. at the time he’d really wished he’d sat with bronson, bronson would’ve had him out of there in seconds flat. the man let out a sigh as he wheeled himself over to the bar and ordered himself a drink. it had been over a year since his accident, but being wheelchair bound wasn’t getting any easier. people rarely had regard for him, people felt free to move him out of the way if they needed something he was in front of, it was infuriating. when presented with his drink, he looked at it sitting on the bar, then looked back at the table he wanted to sit at. how was he going to get the drink there? he needed two hands to push himself and it wasn’t like he could balance a full glass in his lap. atom let out another sigh and looked over at the person sitting at the bar. “could you bring my drink over to that table for me, please?” he asked, smiling slightly trying to show he’s friendly.

Lex was both bothered and unbothered by the events of the evening. He had gotten all of the people he had cared for out of the theatre, made sure that they were relatively safe, and now he needed a drink or two. he would return to the bar and order himself his favorite, fireball whiskey on the rocks. He took a seat at the bar as he gulped down his first swig with a hiss afterward. It never burned less. He was about to take his second one when he heard a smallish voice. Now he couldn’t see very well, all he saw was a guy who looked like he was sitting, his eyes narrowed at the request, did he think he worked there or something? Did he not see he was downing his own drink? “No.” He answer simply and finished off his glass, standing up to eventually take his leave, but then it donned on him.
“Oh...” He finally caught sight of the shine from the wheelchair, well, now he just looked awfully like an asshole who said no to helping a guy in a wheelchair. Lex was an asshole about a lot of things, but he wasn’t that kind. He cleared his throat and reached to pick up the other’s drink as gentle as he could. “Guide me where to.”

outside the casino || @salemstart
The progression of the night hadn’t enlightened the girl in any way whatsoever as to what was actually going on, but the sudden availability of so much abandoned food and drink had overwhelmed Rowan in ways that hadn’t been presented to her in many years. The blonde had gorged herself, unable to control her insatiable appetite (the food was exquisite after all) and was groaning as she shuffled along behind the last of the people who were leaving the casino. She’d eaten a lot in a short space of time, that combined with the mixture of drinks she’d consumed made her stomach a little tender and she was feeling a little more than nauseous right now.      Outside, the cool air hit her like a truck and it only made her skin clam up and her face to contort in discomfort, why did the tempura have to forsake her right in this moment?! One firm shove in her back and she stumbled forwards, breath knocked out of her she bent over and vomited a colourful mixture of swiped cocktails and entrees, unfortunately all over a very nice pair of shoes. Another groan and a wince as she straightened up to lock eyes with the wearer, who was no doubt horrified at her rather disgusting introduction.      “Uh, I’m… sorry? I mean. I feel a lot better now… but sorry it was all over your feet… by the way I can’t afford to pay for dry cleaning… can we just like… settle this with a dunkin coupon or three? I have dozens” as though making to prove a point, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of coupons emblazoned with the doughnut chains logo, a couple spilling onto the floor to which she tutted and crouched down to pick them up before they blew away.
Tumblr media
This night was turning into one Lex should’ve stayed home for fast, and it only got faster when he suddenly bumped into a person and...felt something warm wash over his socks and shoes. He slowly took off his sun glasses so he could get a better idea of what just happened, yes, it was exactly what he figured. “...Did you just throw up on me?” This had never happened before. His eyes darted to the vomiter, he couldn’t tell who she was, but he could tell she was a woman and that did not seem to calm the rage building in him, not even as he heard her apologize.
Lex wasn’t as angry about his shoes being filled with stomach contents, he was angry that she seemed unaware of what was going down right now. He took a deep breath, “You need to shut up and head home, this place isn’t safe for you in the state you’re in.” He could’ve put it more gently, but gentle was not exactly apart of Lex’s nature.

Nina furrows her brows. “What do you mean? It’s just how people sit –” She leans forward to look at the picture before she gets the better of herself and steps back to where she’d just been - there’s no need to invade Lex’s personal space, after all. She huffs. “Yes, that is how you sit. Maybe you were just too invested in your sandwich there,”
She eyes his sandwich more, but relents and eventually sits next to him. It’s been a while, Nina realizes, since she’s sat along side him like this, but she doesn’t bring that fact up. “I don’t think it’d be the same if they delivered that sort of sandwich. If it isn’t fresh, it isn’t any good,” At least, that had largely been her experience at the Amish Market. Most of the time, she couldn’t even wait until she got back home to eat whatever goodies she’d purchased. “…A lentil an walnut burger?” She’s surprised at how good something like that can smell. “I didn’t know you’d become a vegetarian. I don’t think it’s something I could ever do. I can just barely cook meat, any meat alternatives would be a challenge in itself. Do you mind pointing out where you got that one for me?” She asks. She’s been to the Amish Market several times, enough to be familiar and friendly with a few of the vendors, but the same people didn’t come every week, so there were still more new stalls and fresh food to try. “Does it…actually taste like beef or is it all just walnuts?”
Tumblr media
A smirk came to his face as she huffed, he still had the knack for teasing her it seemed. “Maybe so, maybe so.” He chuckled to himself before taking up a napkin and blotting his mouth of any crumbs or sauce.
He could recall moments sitting down like this, of course he could see her much clearer back then, but that didn’t diminish his long term memory. “You don’t think? That’s right, they don’t do same day delivery, do they?” It would make sense, the Amish Market did cater to the more organic crowd and organics are, of course, best the first day. “It’s definitely a battle of willpower, I used to cave and get a rack of ribs,” He took another bite of his half of sandwich, “I’m pretty sure I got it from one of the stalls behind us, but if you want to try before you buy you can have my other half. It’s pretty filling.”
“It tastes like a grainy burger to me, not too nutty and the barbeque sauce really makes it taste, well, meat enough.” He shrugged.

Ana. “Well, would’ya look what the cat dragged in?” Those Dumbo ears were unmistakable, funny, too, when she reconciled the thought that her twin had one-half of a set on her own ears. Growing up in an opulent environment, one was bound to mingle solely in the circles of those who were equally affluent and nothing else. Sent to private schooling, constant studies, rigid and posterity-driven extracurriculars — she had done it all and then some. When she looked back on her youth, there was not a moment of it that she would return to, or that she missed. Her freedom was priceless, at the expense of the potential respect and admiration of those around her who she had disappointed by several, magnificently massive mistakes in her lifetime. That is, the blonde had not only disrespected her family’s name but soiled it by adding a child out of wedlock, with a man who turned out to be a total dirtbag no less. However, a silver lining would reveal itself in instances like these, people like Lex and her sister whom she had reconnected with. Leaning back to take a look at him, the absent thought trickled of how he had grown and filled out for his mid-twenties impressively well. A match with Micah wouldn’t have been right for either of the parties, therefore she was ecstatic ( quietly, subtly ) that both had managed to forge their own paths outside of their birthright. Happiness was a grueling and unsteady path for many, and yet she was always offering her wings to aid others to soar. Lady. So, he was still referring to her in that frivolously formal manner. Nonetheless, it made her smile warmly, and she turned on the stool to face him properly. “I didn’t even know what the hell a video game was when I was growing up, now my son’s obsessed with them. Especially that little… Pokemon one,” she said with a giggle. Of course, she would want Diego to live the normal childhood she had been robbed of. “It was beautifully composed though, I have to agree — Did you catch Micah’s?” Lifting her glass, she sipped it again, rolling her eyes at the sarcasm. Typical.
Tumblr media
The man always held Anabelle in high regard, no matter where her path would lead her, he’d always have a level of respect. Seeing her again seemed to melt the coldness in his eyes, revealing those soft almost childlike ones he was used to looking at her with. He remembered her taking up a motherly role for him and her sister, which he especially needed after his own mother’s passing turned his world. “Being the son of tech moguls meant you got a lot of gadgets for holidays, I don’t even think I have half of the stuff I used to anymore.” He chuckled. His eyes widened a bit when he caught that Micah would be on stage. He hadn’t seen her in a long long time. He didn’t know if he was nervous over the prospect of seeing her again, or if the thought of her would remind him of his deceased wife. She was one of his suitors and she was highly considered since they were the same age and not along the most. Lex took the time to collect his thoughts and put them somewhere else for now, “Ahem...No, no I didn’t. She’s still around? Was she good?”

“No, no,” Nina’s head shakes. Artist doesn’t sit well with her. She pictures people spending hours to make the perfect line and lengthy discussions about what art really is, whereas even thinking of the conversation just makes her head hurt. “It’s just a hobby. Something to do when my hands are bored. And if I didn’t give it away…it’d just wind up getting smudged by another page and eventually stuck on a shelf somewhere. I want you to have it,” And she already has too many books she doesn’t care to touch on her shelves. It’s better for the sketch to go to the muse, after all.
“I’m surprised you didn’t recognize me right away anyway, Lex,” Now with the page free from her fingers and her hands empty, Nina crosses her arms against her chest. “Are you here for anything particular today, or just a sandwich?” She asks. “I mostly needed an excuse to get out of the house for a while or people will start thinking I’m a hermit…some of the hot sandwiches they have here are starting to look pretty good. Would you recommend the people you got that one from?”
Tumblr media
“Mm.” He nodded his head slowly and carefully folded the drawing up to put in his pocket. He supposed he’d put it on his fridge once he got home, it wasn’t every day you just got a drawing of yourself in public. “Do I really sit like that?” He chuckled quietly to himself.
Lex looked up to the woman again for a while before it seemed to register in his vision who she was. Niu--no, Nina. A soft sigh escaped him as he reached over and pulled out a chair for her--her standing like that made him nervous. “Here, sit down.” He directed. “No nothing in particular, I usually get my groceries delivered but they don’t deliver the hot sandwiches--which they should get on that,” he slid his other half over to her, he wasn’t going to eat it. “This one has a burger made of lentils and walnut, cheese, tomato, barbeque sauce, all the sandwich fixings basically. I swore off meat a few years back so I’m used to the alternatives, but they do have a chicken option.”

[ amidst the performances. ]
It actually wasn’t Anabelle’s intention to glue herself to the bar for the evening — alcohol had no rhyme or reason for the southern belle, despising the feeling of intoxication and raw alcohol on her breath. A fruity seltzer on a rare spell didn’t hurt, but in unbridled truth, her reason for seating her rump down at the bar was to have a good view of the slot machines through the transparent door in the lounge, surveying who was coming and going and gauging what machines were likely to spill their guts on a jackpot next. The Royal Arms Club was an amazing scope of the rest of the club, and had she been more attuned to the affluence that her parents had raised her upon, she would have minded to attend more often and hedge her bets of the next lucky winner from afar. Stirring her straw in a glass of peach iced tea, the condensation from the drink dribbling onto the tabletop the longer it sat out in the room temperature. The blonde had been training one eye on the performances, and the other keenly trained on the winning numbers for the evening, calculating between the sets that had been taking to the stand. She hadn’t been sitting there long when she sensed a presence sidling up to her and slipping into the next available seat — ebullient as one could be, Anabelle turned her head to espy who had taken up the open seat, smiling at them warmly. “Howdy,” she greeted with a giggle, the overdone welcome purely wisecrack in nature, and she crossed an ankle over the other, the heel tip of her stiletto bracing against its metallic leg and ignoring the creak of protest, “Who’s your favorite from the setlist so far? Are ya here to see anyone, honeypie?” Her grey eyes shifted to survey the semi-packed room and she acknowledged that the turnout was a success — pitching something like this for her restaurant, or even her club, might be a lucrative prospect. “I’m just surprised there ain’t nobody that’s had one too many for the evening yet,” she joked, leaning her head down to take another sip from her straw languidly.
Lex was not planning on coming out to Wismont, but he knew he’d never hear the end of it if he didn’t come and see the performances and the people he might’ve known. In other words, it wouldn’t be a very good look for him. Making his way from the activity over to the bar, he ordered himself a fireball whiskey and almost didn’t pay much mind to the voice he heard--he didn’t think it was directed at him, but he did recognize that almost sweet drawl. He offered a faint smile and tipped his head, “Ana,” he greeted. He took a fast sip of his drink and let the burn settle in his stomach before speaking again. “That one girl, uhm...Kokoro? I grew up on Zelda so hearing the music again was a blast from the past. What about you, lady?” When she mentioned nobody having too many, his dry humor took over. “I’ll let you know when I’m about 50% there.” And with that, he took another swig.

Flashback, June 2019 || Lex & Sunny
Lex didn’t care for his birth month much, not anymore at least. The last time he celebrated it was when he was before his ‘accident’, but he knew Sunny would not tolerate the 23 year old being cooped up inside. The older man had a soft spot in his heart for Lex, so of course he’d want to make his day at least bearable. Being new in town made Lex nervous to go out, but he did opt for just spending his time over at Sunny’s place and then taking himself home once he was ready to end the mini party. He brought his own drinks in case he didn’t have what he liked and texted him to open the door.
Give or take a few hours later, a drunken smiling Lex was sitting on the couch, laying his head back chuckling to himself. “You know, this is probably the best birthday I’ve had in my 20′s. Weird, huh? You’d think I’d want to be surrounded by friends or family or whatever, buuuut nope. Just Old man Sunny.”

Nina sits in the middle of the Amish Market. It smells nothing of home, something she does take comfort in. She begins to recognize some of the faces around her, which she doesn’t take comfort in. It’s odd, starting over again. She’s taken to the idea of not being known by others…and sitting here in the marketplace staring at everyone with a pencil in hand continues to bring her odd looks. She knows she’s bringing the stares upon herself, but that doesn’t make her feel any better either. Perhaps it’s just what she deserves - stare at others and get stared back.
She adds a final line to the page in her hand. She’s satisfied, and leaves her perch behind, walks between the tables, and offers the page she pulled from her book to the person sitting down. “Here,” She holds the page out and hopes they don’t consider her a creep for taking the time to draw them. She doesn’t do this sort of thing, but it became a practice in lighting and stature and bravery. She thinks it would be weirder to keep the drawing for herself.
“I…thought the way you were sitting there looked interesting,” Nina admits. “Have it. It is you, after all. You can throw it away if you want to. I don’t care. But it is yours.”
Tumblr media
It was one of those days Lex just wanted to wonder Salem with no particular purpose and that’s how he found himself at the Amish Market, picking at a sandwich and people watching. He didn’t expect anything at all to come of being there, so when he looked up at saw a woman holding out a paper for him to take, he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t confused. His cold gaze behind his sunglasses peered at the woman, then to the paper in hand before reaching out to take it.
He held it close to his face as he took his time examining it before he realized that it was a drawing of himself. “I’ve never been drawn before..” He murmured, mainly to himself. He looked up at her. “You’re an artist then?” It sounded more like a statement than a question.

ABOUT:
Lex was born into a very affluent family in Toronto Canada to his two parents who owned a high technology business. Being their first son, they made sure he was outfitted with everything he could possibly need to mold him into a good heir to the Chae family.
He was a rather happy kid with an actually good childhood, he loved his parents and they loved him. However, when his mother got pregnant and gave birth a second time to his younger sister, she wouldn’t make it.
This sent Lex and his father into a deep spiraling depression and led him to basically have to raise his sister himself in his early tween years since his father grew callous and didn’t seem responsive to her early on.
Once he got into his late teen years, he was told he was to be arranged to have a relationship with a girl from another rich family, with marriage in mind.
He didn’t like that news, but he hoped that he could put it off by constantly being busy with his own ventures, like schools and college.
The more he put off his arrangement, the more ‘eligible bachelor’ status he got in high society. Whenever he was asked about his status, he’d say he was focusing on other things or that he was too busy for that kind of life change.
He’d keep the game up until he turned 20 and his father got fed up. He went from an arranged relationship to an arranged marriage with the girl he was assigned, Lex had never seen her before.
On his wedding day, he didn’t meet his bride until she was coming down the isle to him. He could only imagine how she was feeling, so he was a gentleman and treated her nicely so she wouldn’t feel too stressed.
Things started out fine in their marriage, they got along and were a good team for the most part as they got used to each other. Lex would even say he liked her.
After a year, his wife got too comfortable and started letting her true nature show. It started out with harmful statements and words towards Lex, and he would just take it silently and move on to another topic. He did this because he knew his wife’s family was hard on her, so that probably all she knew.
The arguments started ramping up more frequently and soon became paranoia filled and physically abusive.
As much as he wanted to tell his father about everything, he didn’t want to cause a rift and cause problems he couldn’t handle if he did. But his father did notice that his son was becoming colder and losing his smile and cheeriness.
On his 22nd birthday, he decided he’d go out with his friends to celebrate. He didn’t tell his wife where he was heading, but he did say he was going to meet with some colleagues of his. All was going fine until he heard his name being shouted and a bottle being crashed against his head.
After that night, a head injury cause Lex to develop light sensitivity and low vision. It also caused him to hate and even fear his wife.
Another year passed and he was still dealing with his wife and his degenerating vision, but this would be the year his wife would lose her life under unknown circumstances and leave him widowed.
Finally breaking, Lex dropped of the rich family map and moved himself in a whirlwind to a place called Salem, Massachusetts in the states where he could...be alone for a while.
