#Repost from @hattie.carthan with @regram.app ... Dear Community, Come join The Hattie Carthan Food Justice Leadership Collective for dinner and discussion October 19th from 6pm to 9pm. We will watch and study films about the development of New York City and the factors that contributed to the creation of spaces like the Hattie Carthan Community Garden. We will be screening selected short films and media produced by the Hattie Carthan community food projects and oral history project as well as the 60 minute documentary "Between The Word And The Deed..." Directed by Gordon Hyatt in 1971. The documentary was commissioned in 1968 by the City of New York’s Model Cities Administration and was designed to investigate the experience of community and advocacy planning in New York City’s three Model Cities Area. Filming took place over a two-year period and involved five camera people, but the final product was never shown until 2018, and since then at select screenings. After the screening of the film we will have time for a community discussion about what we've watched, what we see, and what we want to see in our community, as well as how to achieve it. Our food justice collective founder Yonnette Fleming will offer innovative commentary around what is needed for community gardens and frontline workers to establish community equity. We will have a Delicious heritage meal from Farmer Yon and the community market along with light libations. Admission $20 gets you a seat around our table. Movie and Dinner tickets on sale at both market or via website www.hattiecarthancommunitymarket.com Just write movie night in the memo line so we know what you're paying for Gates open 6pm Shorts begin 630pm Please join us as we gather to ponder the role of community in achieving equity. https://www.instagram.com/p/B25E9TCjfYB/?igshid=r1rbhh135lrz

The field of women's health needs more women in professional roles! This includes OB/GYNs, pelvic health physical therapists, labor and delivery nurses, health coaches, midwives, doulas, acupunturists, researchers and any other medical, health, or wellness profession that specializes in women's health. Women deserve more than prescriptions that only mask symptoms but do not get to the root cause. Women deserve to be pain and symptom free during their menstrual cycles. Women deserve balanced hormones. Women deserve to give birth without fear and trauma. I personally prefer health coaching, because it allows you to work with clients in a way that reflects your own experience and desired business model. Most of the health coaches I know have built successful practices from their own personal health journey. When it comes to reversing #PCOS, who's better equipped than the person living with it who has also been trained in functional medicine and evidence-based health coaching to guide someone else with the diagnosis? My health coach training gave me the tools to empower myself and advocate for my own healing. If you've been open about your #PCOSJourney, I invite you to uplevel your advocacy by registering for @integrativewomenshealth's training on how to build an integrative women's health practice. Click on the link in @pcoshealthcoach bio, then click on Become a Coach or visit pcoshealthcoach.info/training to learn more. https://www.instagram.com/p/BzzBnEnAND1/?igshid=1im4o0bizymyr

I've donated my body to science! Just kidding. On Monday I did a sleep study to get to the root cause of my disrupted sleep pattern. Before puberty, I slept 10-12 hours a night (I had a really early bedtime growing up). As I got older, I'd find myself waking up several times during the night, and needing to take naps after school and work. For the past ten years, I've rarely been able to sleep longer than 4-5 hours. I can go back to sleep a couple hours later, but it wasn't sustainable before I started working for myself. While there are many ways to support expectants, I've been reluctant to take on birth clients as being on-call could make things worse for me. I don't believe I have sleep apnea since I didn't need the cpap, but as there are more than 80 different sleep disorders, I'm hoping the results give me something to work with. If you have #PCOS, are pregnant, and/or are overweight, you are more likely to develop sleep apnea. If you snore, wake several times during the night, and don't feel rested upon waking, speak with your primary care provider about a referral to a sleep specialist. I really don’t like using “should” and I try really hard to not tell people what to do, I’d much rather prefer to point you in the direction of relevant information and show you how to ask the right questions that can help you make the best decision based on the information you have and your own inner wisdom in the moment. That said, I feel it’s important to address the desire to have a baby when you have not resolved reversible health issues that can lead to a high-risk pregnancy, pre-term birth, miscarriage, and other unwanted outcomes.. Considering that the US has some of the highest maternal morbidity outcomes in the world (we should be so embarassed and ashamed!), it would behoove those #ttc to do the best they can to get their bodies (and minds) in the best health possible to minimize risk and traumatic outcomes. I’m speaking to this as a health coach, full-spectrum doula, and black woman who has received, witnessed, and heard of abuse and/or obstetric violence by medical professionals who have dismissed my or an expectant’s concerns due to their weight, pre-existing condition, economic and education status, marital status, age, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, and just because of the field’s flat out disregard for women and women’s health. Your health should be your number one priority, period. What the baby needs, YOU need, FIRST. Mistreatment of people with uteruses in the healthcare system is REAL. One of the first lines of defense is to take responsibility for your health. No one can tell you more about your body then you, despite how many years of education and training someone may have. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore sound medical advice. And while you may not be able to prevent certain outcomes, you can minimize them by taking the best care of yourself before you conceive. So if a doctor wants you to get your A1c down before you conceive, don’t get mad at the doctor. They are not hoarding power over you or trying to control your body reproduction. They are rightfully concerned about your health and well-being and that of your baby. #maternalhealth #preconceptionhealth #pcos #pcosttc #womenshealth #reproductivejustice https://www.instagram.com/p/BzUBJmLDSCe/?igshid=6ge4tt5kq3df
