Tumblr media
Delphi 2007 Serial
Delphi 2007 – Delphi 7 on Steroids. Delphi 2007 for Win32 is primarily targeted at Win32 developers wanting to upgrade their existing projects to include full Vista support – themed applications and VCL support for glassing, file dialogs, and Task Dialog components. One result of that is the imminent release of Delphi 2007 for Win32. Many people are still using Delphi 7 or earlier because they simply don’t want the extra personalities (Delphi for.NET, C# and C) in Delphi 2006. Delphi 2007 is for them. It’s a full Win32 Delphi, unlike the Turbo Delphi releases in 2006, which don’t have all the.

What more is new in the compiler?
New published vs $M+ behavior
The new 'W1055 PUBLISHED caused RTTI ($M+) to be added to type '%s' ' warning is interesting. It solves one of the issues we discussed earlier. In earlier versions of the compiler, if you compiled code like this:
The published property would not have RTTI generated, but would be silently treated as a public property. This is because TMyClass does not derive from a class compiled with $M+ enabled (such as TPersistent) and $M+ is not specified for the TMyClass itself. When you compile the same code in Delphi 2007 you will now get a warning:
(DCC Warning) ThSort.pas(13): W1055 PUBLISHED caused RTTI ($M+) to be added to type 'TMyClass'
This indicates that despite the missing $M+, the compiler has promoted the published properties to published and generated RTTI fro them. To remove the warning, add a $M+ directive in front of the class - or change published to public - if that is what you really meant. Nice touch!
$DYNAMICBASE and ASLR
The compiler accepts a new $DYNAMICBASE ON/OFF compiler directive, and a corresponding command line parameter called '--dynamicbase'. This is a shortcut for the existing $SetPEOptFlags directive. $DYNAMICBASE ON corresponds to $SetPEOptFlags $40 where $40 is defined by Windows as:
The SetPEOptFlags directive sets a field in the PE header that is also called DllCharacteristics. It is used by the Windows loader to determine capabilities of a loaded module (DLL or BPL, for instance). The bit $40 seem to have a specific meaning in Windows Vista and enables a feature called Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR). It means that the OS loads the module at a more or less random address (actually a random offset between 0 and 255) instead of trying to load it at exactly at the specified imagebase address. This is a security and anti-remote-hack measure making it harder to construct buffer overflow attacks that call known system DLL routines at fixed addresses. You can read more about it here.
--description command line option
Tumblr media
The compiler also has a new command line option --description:<string> that corresponds to the $DESCRIPTION compiler directive. It lets you set the module description entry in the PE header.
What's new in the RTL?
The run time library contains the lowest level building blocks in the Delphi eco-system above the compiler. The special SysInit and System units are tightly bound to the internals of the compiler and linker. When using packages, SysInit is compiled into every module (EXE and package BPLs), while the System unit is only compiled into the rtl100.bpl. That is the reason they are split into to physically different units.
That's enough nitty-gritty background. What is new, then? Well, SysInit hasn't changed. I guess this is an indication that it has stabilized and don't need any changes for fixes. So, good news. Let's dive into the inner secrets of the System unit changes.
The System unit changes
There is a new interfaced boolean global variable with the catchy name NeverSleepOnMMThreadContention. It is used in the new FastMM based memory manager (courtesy of Pierre le Riche) that resides in the getmem.inc file that is included in the implementation section of System.pas. Here is the comment that accompanies the variable declaration:
When the FastMM memory manager needs to protect shared resources, it uses light-weight atomic operations (such as the lock cmpxchg assembly instruction) instead of the more heavy-duty OS-level critical section APIs. If there is contention (the resource has already been locked by another thread), it normally sleeps to release the CPU and allow the other thread to finish its work and release the lock.
As the comment above alludes to, in some situations on multiprocessor machines (that is becoming mainstream) it may be more efficient to just keep looping and checking the lock availability (also called a spin-lock) while waiting for the other thread to execute on one of the other processors to release the lock. Here is an example of how the Pascal version of this logic looks like:
Another improvement to the assembly versions (which gets used by default) of these spin-locks is usage of the pause x86 instruction to be more processor and OS-friendly:
In addition the FastMM code size has been slightly reduced (I haven't measured) by using the equivalent of a method-extract refactoring on some of the assembly code (the logic for resizing a large memory block has been refactored into an internal ReallocateLargeBlock routine).
Finally, it looks like there is some improved logic to support segmented large blocks. Pierre's comment in the code about this is:
Optimized RTL routines
As Steve Threfethen has already blogged about there are now updated and new FastCode replacement functions included in the stock RTL. The compiler magic System routine _LStrCmp is used whenever you compare strings, so it is a performance critical piece of code. Pierre le Richie wrote a new, faster version of this routine (based on the FastCode winner of the CompareStr challenge) and submitted it to Quality Central #31328. This routine has now been incorporated into the RTL.
Note that _LStrCmp is a general routine that is called for all string compares, including the string compare operators >, >=, =, <>, < and <=. In Pierre's QC entry he suggests changing the compiler so that it calls a different, more specific function (_LStrEqual) - in most cases, it would be able to determine non-equalness simply by comparing the strings' lengths. As this change would probably break binary .dcu compatibility, it is not included in Spacely, but it is a possibility for Highlander (that will probably become BDS 2007).
The other FastCode replacement functions reside in SysUtils. The UpperCase and LowerCase were already FastCode functions (by Aleksandr Sharahov) in BDS 2006 - there are now even faster versions by John O'Harrow in Delphi 2007. In addition CompareStr and StrLen are new FastCode functions from Pierre le Riche.
In addition the FileAge and FileSearch functions have been optimized. FileAge now calls the more efficient GetFileAttributesExA API (when available) instead of the FindFirst/FindClose pair. FileSearch now leaves early if the Name parameter is an empty string. These two changes also helps improve the speed of the compiler and linker.
Finally the hash-table logic used in the CheckForDuplicateUnits routine during loading of packages has been further optimized. This code was greatly improved in BDS2006 and it is now even faster. This helps reduce the startup time of applications that loads lots of packages dynamically (such as the Delphi IDE itself).
Desktop Window Manager API
There is a new DwmApi unit (in the sourceWin32rtlwin directory) that dynamically binds to the Windows Vista specific APIs exported by DWMAPI.DLL. On other platforms the routines are stubbed out to return the E_NOTIMPL error code. The constants and routines in this unit is the basis of all the new Windows Vista and Glass specific functionality added to the VCL and Delphi IDE. It has exiting sounding routine names like DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea and DwmUpdateThumbnailProperties. Most of the time the VCL shields you from using these nitty-gritty APIs directly, but its handy to know where to find them.
Math unit and complete boolean evaluation
The math unit has had a couple of interesting changes to the trio (Integer, Int64 and Double versions) of the InRange functions. Basically, the code has been rearranged from (BDS 2006 version):
to (Delphi 2007 version):
The code changes forces the compiler to evaluate both boolean expressions before setting the Result variable. This reduces the number of conditional jumps and thus typically improves performance (particularly in the cases where InRange returns true - then it has to evaluate both expressions anyway). The generated code differences are as follows - here is the assembly code generated for the old BDS 2006 version of InRange:
and here is the assembly code for the new version:
As you can see the second version does not have any branches, while the first one has two conditional branch instructions. Modern processors work better with branchless code, so the net effect is better performance. We might revisit this topic in the future - and the alternative way of accomplishing the same thing - using the $B+ compiler directive to enable complete boolean evaluation.
Delphi 2007 Serial
That concludes part two of this review - part three will follow shortly. Stay tuned! ;)

Description of Grand Prix 4
Tumblr media
Microprose's Geoff Crammond knows a thing or two about creating decent racing simulations, a fact showcased by his sterling work from Revs all the way up to Grand Prix 3. At the same time, Microprose's publisher Hasbro knows a thing or two about milking a product for all it's worth, as we saw with the pitiful GP3 2000 Season Update.
GP4 carries the hallmarks of both these traits. Open the box and you'll find a solid racing simulation that has been developed firmly upon the GP3 / GP32K foundation. While the in-game mechanics are virtually unchanged, you'll also find that some of the weaknesses have carried over in the process, and long time fans may feel that there has not been enough of a progression to warrant paying another ÂŁ30.
Grand Prix 4 Download Mac Free
The GP4 experience gets off to a good start with the new interface styling, a swirly hi-tech affair that looks miles better than the previous photo-laden backgrounds from GP2 and 3. The menus retain the depth of options we're used to from previous editions, including the standard quick race, non-championship race, full championship etc., plus there's a little novelty in the quick laps option that made its debut in the GP32K add-on. This mode lets up to 22 drivers shoot it out for the fastest qualifying time, feeling like a rally-style competition around a grand prix circuit. The GP series has always catered for multiplayer 'hotseat' racing on a single PC, and this neat little extension is the next best option to split-screen play.
Heading out onto the track for the first time, you'll be hit by a triple-whammy of surprises. First, you're greeted by the sight of fully animated mechanics lowering your car and indicating that it's clear to drive into the pit lane. The second surprise is the quality of the graphics. Unlike the cartoony effect in the EA F1 games, GP4 goes for a clinical pseudo-photorealism and pulls it off with sharply defined objects, smooth textures and panoramic backdrops. Monaco is the perennial showcase of an F1 sim's graphical ability, and GP4 genuinely exceeds itself here - the detailing on everything from the casino to the docked yachts is nothing short of remarkable.
The third is the gorgeous engine note. Apparently sampled from the Arrows F1 Ford Cosworth, it comes across as raspy and seriously powerful. It's also completely different to the screaming samples in F1 2002. It's hard to say which is more realistic, but they both sound fantastic.
Every F1 game claims to employ GPS data to model the tracks, and every new incarnation seems to get closer and closer to the real thing (at least, as we see it on TV). GP4 is no exception, and the new breed of tracks feature more pronounced dips, crests and road camber changes (bankings) than those in GP3. All 2001 changes like the re-profiling of chicanes at Monza and the lower kerbs at Hungary are also present. F1 2002 is just as accurate but it exaggerates effects like bumps. That aside, the casual fan will notice little difference between the two.
Whilst F1 2002 goes out for maximum frills per cc, GP4 is good at doing the important things well, and in some areas it mops the floor with the opposition. The AI, already impressive in GP3, is simply stunning here. Negotiating starts is a fraught affair, with the cars possessing an uncanny spatial awareness and ability to take your space without crashing into you. The 2001 season traits have been modelled well, and often the Schumacher brothers will take the fight for the lead into the distance. In one race at Monza, Jarno Trulli tried an ill-fated out-braking manoeuvre on Ralf Schumacher's BMW Williams into Turn 1, sending them both into the gravel. Great stuff!
Equally wonderful are the replays, thanks to the replay editor first introduced in the GP32K add-on. Geoff Crammond has a creepy knack of replicating TV camera angles and the placements are simply perfect. To see the cars jostling for position down towards Les Combes at the end of the long Spa straight, or seeing them spear through Eau Rouge from a camera at the bottom of the hill, or to watch the AI battles courtesy of the 'directors cut' mode, is to witness PC racing perfection. F1 2002 doesn't even come close.
Another GP4 forte is the variable weather. This was one of the aces in the pack in GP3, and GP4 enhances it with its improved graphics (we finally get the raindrops-on-the-camera-lens effect for the first time!). Controlling an aquaplaning car in the wet is GP4's ultimate challenge, and it's sometimes worth following the AI until you get the hang of it. The informative force feedback comes into its own here. Grip? No grip? You can feel it in an instant.
GP4 retains the high fidelity telemetry and setup options that have been a hallmark (and a joy to serious simheads) throughout the series, and couples them to the improvements from the GP32K add-on. Every advanced setup option is now linked to an integrated GPaedia (which comes with informative video clips from Arrows Test Team Manager Mark Hemsworth), providing much needed guidance for relative newcomers, whilst seasoned pros have a new toy to tweak with, in the form of the differential.
Unusually for a Microprose sim, GP4 makes some concessions to the casual player by introducing some snazzy eye-candy. The animated pit crew is one such feature, as are the animated track marshals and spectators, and the fully functional car-mounted TV display that lets you track the qualifying session (who needs Sky Digital when you've got this?). For those of you put off by the claustrophobic cockpit view, GP4 features new roll-bar and chase-car camera views that come complete with digital displays and a dinky little Rally Championship-style track map.
Bearing in mind that much of the above is already available in the GP32K add-on, there are a few other problems. The new style menus, for instance, are a pain to navigate, a good case in point being the once-clear all-inclusive car setup screens having been split into several sub-menus. In addition, GP4 uses your game controller to navigate the menus, but it couldn't properly calibrate our MS Force Feedback Wheel and this led to a lot of frantic cursor chasing. The game is also buggy, at least under Windows XP, where it would frequently crash back to the desktop on our test machine.
GP4's main competitor, F1 2002, contains several exciting features like separate car performance characteristics and cockpit designs for each team, smarter driver aids and a training school facility to help get to grips with the car handling, along with the 2002 season data. The car physics feel more realistic too. GP4's cars are stable and predictable, even with the driver aids switched off. The F1 2002 breed is considerably more dynamic and exhilarating, with the superb driver feedback letting you feel for and control the power-induced slides.
Finally, the graphics engine powering GP4 exhibits the same problems as the one in GP2, dating all the way back to 1996, despite supposedly being completely new. Unlike in other games where overloading the processor leads to jerky framerates, GP games attempt to artificially compensate to provide a continually smooth frame. The result, though, is that a game simulating a car at speeds of 150mph in the rain somehow manages to look like it's really simulating 15mph, and adjusting detail levels hasn't helped. EA's title in comparison maintains a super fast speed throughout.
Whilst we gave GP3 the benefit of the doubt two years ago, the competition has advanced leaps and bounds since. GP4 has a limited scope and attempts to do its job well, but is let down by a lack of innovation and a gutless graphics engine. F1 2002 meanwhile very nearly matches the quality of the GP4 core features and also advances the genre further with its technically superior game engine and inventiveness. GP4 is worth a look, offering a rock-solid racing experience against some well-crafted AI, but it doesn't add anything significantly new. As a result, it only fully justifies its price tag for Microprose completists and those with very high spec machines.

Jim, tried your solution and it's not working for me using vista. Any help please?

Okay folks, so you don't make the same mistake I did, and try unsuccessfully to install the game, here's what you do. Download the 'Full RIP Pre Patched 512MB' file. Unzip, or just drag the 'Grand Prix 4' directory from the zip file, to the location of your choice (in my case it was J:Games), and then create a shortcut on your desktop to GP4.exe located in said 'Grand Prix 4' directory. Double click the shortcut, and play the game. I did adjust the screen res from the default 1024x768, upped all the graphic details, and turned down the music, and that was all I needed to do to enjoy some old school GP racing.

I've installed it, patched it, and applied the NoCD patch. Does anyone know how to get it to work properly in Win10? What compatibility settings are needed? Thanks

@GREG Please try to be more supportive of others next time. We are all gamers and can learn from each other. @MAKO An ISO is an image of a cd or set of files in a similar way as a ZIP compressed folder. You should be able to 'mount' the image in a Virtual CD drive, and run it as if you had the real disc in.

Hey, when I click on 'setup' for the installation it says 'Setup failes to launch installation engine: not registered class'. And when I tried 'Autorun' and clicked on 'Installation' it just do nothing. Any ideas on what should I do?
RubyVolt2020-06-091 point
Thank you for putting the NOCD file. After burning and installing the ISO, just copy the NOCD over the original and race.
supertomcat2020-06-084 points
Also try the no cd at the bottom and then put the patch if that doesn't work. I may do a step by step guide.
supertomcat2020-06-082 points
download the pre-patched rip version instead

I downloaded, burned with Nero, installed. When I try to run, it says, 'put in the CD' when the CD is in there. OH WELL....
supertomcat2020-06-071 point
Get an iso mounter and if you have windows it should work. (this is a windows game not dos) If it doesn't work on windows 10 set up a virtual machine running Xp

Best Monitor For Apple Mac Pro 2010
ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC 15.6 inch Full HD Monitor This is one of the best portable monitors which can easily fit inside your gear bag.
Best Apple Monitor
I have just bought 3x apple cinema 20' displays (the old school kind) and just wanted to check if I need adaptors and which kind. I'm just unsure of what type/size/resolution requires what. And it's on my 2010 Mac pro with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory.
Whether it's for your MacBook Pro or your Windows laptop you’re looking to buy a USB-C monitor for, the BenQ EW3270U is a great all-around choice. This 4K display delivers beautiful picture quality.

Twelve cores and twenty-four threads—that's what I'm sitting in front of. Even after owning an 8-core Nehalem Xeon Mac Pro, I just wasn't prepared for the 8 extra threads in my new shiny new 12-core Westmere Xeon Mac Pro. It's just that crazy. Sometimes, you look up at the menu bar and you think that Iran has Photoshopped extra iStat CPU bars up there, to convince you of this machine's awesome powers:
Every time that happens, I hear a Black Sabbath guitar solo off in the distance, and my mouse hand does this of its own accord:
But then the smoke machine fog dies down, and I'm left with the rest of my programs that don't cause multi-core god rays to appear. This is life with many cores.
Custom-built Mac Pro 2010 specs
Dual-socket six-core 2.66GHz Westmere Xeon Mac Pro
15GB RAM
OCZ Vertex Turbo 120GB system disk
2TB striped RAID working disk
ATI 5870 1GB
dual NEC 2490WUXi LCDs at 1920x1200
Comparison 2009 Mac Pro
Dual quad-core 2.66GHz Nehalem Xeon Mac Pro
24GB RAM
OCZ Vertex Turbo 120GB system disk
2TB striped RAID working disk
ATI 4870 512MB
dual NEC 2490WUXi LCDs at 1920x1200
Both machines are using the same hard drives—I reformatted the system disk and put it in the new Mac Pro after running the benchmarks on the 2009 Mac Pro.
The Hardware
The 2010 Mac Pro now comes with an 802.11n Wi-Fi card by default. I always use wired, but this was a dumb thing to make an upgrade because there are times you find you need wireless. The new Mac Pros also come with the magic mouse.

There isn't much else to say about the 2010 internals that wasn't said already in my 2009 Mac Pro review. That's no complaint—the internals of this machine are great, and not much was in need of revising. It's still the easiest Mac ever to upgrade, and all the goodies like the thumbscrew PCI card block are still there:
The memory bay count of eight is still unchanged, so users need to be careful not to fill them for the sake of filling them. My 15GB RAM allocation may seem gross as a number, but it's the proper pairing:
Combining three 1GB with three 4GB modules means that the memory is in running in triple-channel mode. Filling all eight slots wouldn't be the best way to go.
The ATI Radeon 5870
Since I do 3D work, I upgraded from the Radeon 5770 to the Radeon 5870. On a purely aesthetic level, it's a beautiful design:
The 5870 has three outputs: one dual-link DVI and two mini DiplayPorts, so it should drive three screens with resolutions as high as the 27' that Apple just released. I wanted to test it with three LCDs, and thought it would work without any hitches, since my triple 1920x1200 screens are on the conservative side. After receiving a second single-link mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, I've only been able to use two and, it seems, this is not a bug. If you want to connect to DVI displays (no matter the resolution), you have to use the more expensive mini DisplayPort-to-dual-link-DVI adapters. Apple's docs covering this issue are here:
