the thing is, dumbledore and snape are just as much set at opposite moral standards as, say, harry and voldemort. harry and voldemort are set up to ponder the question of love vs power - their thematic arc is built around that central moral tension.

snape and dumbeldore are set up in a similar way, but their moral tension is about sacrifice vs selfishness. and it’s done in a really interesting way, because while we do get a clear answer on where we should fall on the love vs power struggle (obvs the books steer us to love instead of power, as harry, personification of love, defeats voldemort, personification of power), i don’t think it’s as clear-cut with dumbledore and snape. 

dumbledore is a personification of sacrifice. he is the “all for the greater good” character who thinks big picture, moves people around like chess pieces, and is always focused on saving as many people as he can without focusing on his personal feelings for them. he IS the guy who would sacrifice one life to save many lives - we see that with harry. it’s clearly built out of his selfish (and i say “selfish” but perhaps i should say self-interested instead - this is about focusing on your personal needs without the negative connotations built into “selfish”) choices when he was a teenager, where he focused on his own personal relationships over the “greater good” and lost his sister and his relationship with his brother for it. so dumbledore’s policy is always the many over the few and his morality is skewed toward that.

snape is the personification of “selfishness.” we are constantly told to see him as self-interested and self-involved - he is the one who wants to be recognized for catching sirius, who watches the catch sirius for “selfish” reasons, who has a personal grudge against harry, who is from the “selfish” slytherin house and leads it. he is the one who is supposed to put the few above the many - namely, himself. and then, as we see in book seven, lily. snape’s morality is skewed toward the people he loves over the many. 

and knowing that really brings into perspective the way they react to events in book seven. of course dumbledore, who sacrificed his lover for the “greater good” would recoil at snape’s desperation to save the one person he loves over everyone else. of course snape, who puts the people he loves first, would recoil at dumbledore’s decision to sacrifice harry for the greater good. the scenes where we see those reactions parallel so neatly it’s impossible not to see how much they are supposed to be thematic and moral opposites. 

but the thing is, we’re never really encouraged to see a “side” like we do for harry vs voldemort. dumbledore’s disgust is read by the audience as “valid” - but so is snape’s. we are supposed to recoil with outage at snape supposedly putting lily before harry and james, but we are also supposed to recoil with outrage at dumbledore sacrificing harry for the world. dumbledore is not “right” and snape is not “wrong” - they’re both necessary. 

obviously i just want to write a term paper about this, but i honestly just find them fascinating to compare.

What's your take on FL and Walls? Do you love the music? Which songs are your favourite? How do you think lt2 and hs3 will sound? What do you think about Harry's public relationships? I'm curious because you usually don't answer in posts ❤

So….one of my long-standing pet peeves with any pop music is when the song takes two minutes to fade out and the entire time it’s simply the singer repeating one or two lines over and over. So I actually haven’t listened to the entirety of FL because I’m pretty sure I won’t like its repetitiveness. Watermelon Sugar was an ear worm and I viscerally disliked the video a lot. If hs3 is more of the same, it won’t be for me. This makes me kinda sad because I really loved Harry a lot as part of 1D, and I wish I could appreciate him in his grown-up incarnation. I probably have thousands of gifs of him. What about Harry’s public relationships—I think they look awkward but who am I to say. I noticed that when he and Olivia walked one way up the street in those recent pics, they were close together. The other one, far apart. Easy cropping for those who don’t wish to see her!

I love love love Walls, on the other hand. I appreciate the lyricism, the stories, the melodies, the meaning and emotion, the production—I can’t wait to hear what Louis has had percolating during pandemic. I appreciate his smarts, his savvy, his persistence as an artist despite not having the uber-capitalist music industry fueling his career. I think he’s gifted in many areas. The potential for his own creative and artistic satisfaction is huge for him, and I hope it includes a long and healthy stage career because DAMMIT I AM READY TO SEE HIM LIVE. I would love if he did another Live; I think it’s great that he’s throwing a festival. I would buy probably multiple copies of any CD or record he chose to put out.

Speaking as a writer and artist myself, appreciation and acknowledgment from a wider audience is lovely and feels so good to the creative souls. When I’m able to place my satisfaction in digging in to the work and getting into the state of flow, as a perfectionist I’m much happier and less anxious. It also feels really great to do creative work! Some of the best, most rewarding work! I hope Louis is generally doing well and can’t wait to see him next year (hopefully as the pandemic allows).
