How it feels knowing I'll enjoy Arya's arc whether my theories are right or not because I'm a fan of what's written in the books, not what I projected onto her character

Valryian Text, House of the Dragon, Episode 109
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I showed this on Instagram, but thought it would be fun to post it here, as well. In episode 109 of House of the Dragon, they asked me for an orthographic version of the King's Peace law, because they wanted to put it on the top of the dragon pit. I spied it as the crowd is filing in to watch the crowning of Aegon. I took some analog screenshots (i.e. photographed my television screen with my phone) to show how it works. The top shot is the basic shot of the front of the dragon pit. The second shot has the Valyrian text superimposed over the top of it. The last shot is it written large in glyphs. It reads:
Tego Ēlior Vēttir Dāro Lyks Kessa.
"The first law of the land shall be the King's peace."
Fans of the books will know that this law stated that if any of the Seven Kingdoms had beef with any of the other Seven Kingdoms (e.g. the North and Dorne had beef), they had to take it to the Iron Throne, rather than settle it themselves. I thought it was a cool little detail, and I was so delighted they asked me to do it!

Well, we do have a common folk pov: Dunk, or rather, 'ser' Duncan the Tall.
George has shown us through TKOTSK how war affects the ASOIAF universe from a common folk pov, we do have that.
the only time we ACTUALLY see smallfolk is when a royal/lady/lord meets one, if grrm really wanted to show their pov because he's essentially on their side, why are there no recurring smallfolk pov chapters? its the common folk who suffer the most in a war... no shit sherlock who else would 😭 better to just enjoy the story and actual characters than cry about some faceless unwashed extra to feel edgy lol.
I think this came after my anti-war post. Well, yeah, exactly. This is not a story about small folk, it's a story about nobility who leads people to war, literally. You need to know what you're watching or else you're a Gilmore Girls fan in a Game of Thrones universe burning our remaining braincells every time you voice an opinion (not you anon).

I do think that GRRM favours his GNC female characters, such as Arya and Brienne, who are warriors and fighters, over the ‘traditional ladies’ of the series, but at the same time I also thinks he favours his GNC male characters too, such as Sam and Tyrion, who are not warriors. Sam especially has an arc all about not fitting into Westerosi masculinity and being gentle and nurturing and fearful of combat.
It is not the value of the gender roles that causes GRRM to like these characters more, but their rejection or fight against gender roles in themselves. GRRM has made it clear that it is the outsiders, the rebels and the misfits, he favours.

Jon's eyes were a grey so dark they seemed almost black, but there was little they did not see. (Bran I, AGoT)
--
Most Valyrian steel was a grey so dark it looked almost black, as was true here as well. But blended into the folds was a red as deep as the grey. (Tyrion IV, ASoS)
Jon's eyes are the colour of Valyrian steel.

"But Rhaenyra's heir was a bastard! That means the Greens were right to support Aegon II instead of her!"
So you're telling me, if Rhaenyra had by chance married Harwin Strong, and he was her only husband, and she had 5 very legitimate dark-haired sons with him... Alicent would've just sat back and let Rhaenyra take the throne instead of Aegon? Criston would have? Otto would have? All the other lords of Westeros would have preferred a woman as ruling Queen, instead of the king's son?
Well. That's news to GRRM, because in an early version of the Dance, Rhaenyra was married to a Strong, and had three legitimate kids with him... and the Dance of the Dragons still happened.
From A Song of Ice and Fire Campaign Guide, published by Green Ronin in 2010, which GRRM provided with a lot of then-published information, including his existing version of the Targaryen family tree:

(Yes, Lyonel, not Harwin. And interestingly, this was version 2 of the Targaryen tree / Dance of the Dragons era - in version 1, Rhaenyra's first husband was a Lannister, though she had no children by him.)
Also, it should be noted that this is how this RPG book explains the reason for the Dance of the Dragons:

Mind you, this is simply paraphrasing what we learned from Jaime
Tumblr media
and Arys
Tumblr media
in AFFC (2005)... and yet. Interesting, isn't it. At the time AFFC was written, at the time we first learned who's blamed by history for the cause of the Dance, when we learned why it's believed he did it... Rhaenyra only had legitimate children. Maybe that's not the real issue after all...
