intro
hi all! my name is madeline (or mads) and i’m hearing. i’m a 22-year-old graduate student studying health and medical journalism. this blog is just a personal place for me to practice my sign (and possibly make some virtual Deaf/hoh friends?).
even though i might post some vlogs, i just want be clear and acknowledge my privilege as a hearing person:
1. i’ve only taken one asl class w a Deaf professor and my knowledge of asl is very limited
2. any vlogs i upload will be me practicing sign language — NOT teaching or trying to teach other hearing ppl how to sign. simply practice for me/opportunities for Deaf/hoh ppl to correct me or give me feedback if they want to.
just wanted to make sure nobody thinks i’m trying to teach or gain attention by appropriating asl, Deaf culture or sign language in general. my motivation for learning sign is simply to immerse myself in Deaf culture (virtually, especially during COVID times) and to be able to communicate with the Deaf community when possible.
thank you all and it’s nice to meet you, if anyone’s reading this! 🤟
