âOh, that movie was terrible! Â Honestly, youâd think Ryan Reynolds could do ten thousand times better than that garbage film!â Â He shook his head. Â âAt least the new Deadpool movie looks to be good. Hopefully.â Â At least this one was rated R.
âIâm John, by the way. Â John Smith.â
âI know right?â Maia laughed. âAnd I am so excited for the Deadpool movie. Fingers crossed that itâs so much better than Green Lantern.â
âIâm Maia,â she introduced. âMaia Byg. Itâs a pleasure to meet you, John.â

âAttractive men and food? Â Getting better and better,â he joked.
âYou should see me in a Green Lantern costume. Â Lots better than that awful movie they made. Â And my suit isnât animated.â
âYou just gave me another reason to look forward to Halloween,â Maia smiled.
âAnd Iâm pretty sure a middle school drama class could make a better movie than that. It was a pretty crappy movie.âÂ

âSo youâre saying that, were I to go to Burma or Thailand, I would find myself in the company of beautiful men?â Â John pondered this for a moment, nodding his head. Â âSounds like the place to be.â
He grinned at the compliment, and he gave a little bow. Â âThank you, thank you. Â Although, I must say, I look far better in green.â
âIt really does,â Maia gave a slight smile, âAnd the food isnât too bad either.â
Maia laughed. âWell, let me see you in green and Iâll let you know if thatâs true. Even though I have no doubt that it is.â

âNice mistake,â he chuckled. Â She mentioned his shirt, and he looked down. Â What was he wearing again? Â Oh!
âWhy thank you, I bought this shirt about three weeks ago.  It reminded me of BurmaâŚespecially the gold color.  Iâve always wanted to go there.â
âIâve heard Burma is beautiful. My friend in Thailand goes there a lot for vacationing. Sheâs always sending me pictures that say âwish you were hereâ, but sheâs surrounded by men in the pictures, so I doubt thatâs true.â
âThe gold color looks good on you; it makes your eyes pop.â Wow, Maia, say everything that pops into your head. She smiled.

Maia looked down at herself and laughed. âIâm pretty sure it ended up in my gym bag by mistake. Youâre shirt is pretty amazing as well.â
âNow, Iâm no expert, but I have to say that your shirt is awesome.â

Heath nodded. âAh,â was all he said in response, unsure how else to react to his lips glowing, along with the rest of his body. His eyes widened slightly, however, at her next comment, having not expected such a quip from someone so⌠small. Sheâs not always tiny, he had to remind himself.
âIf I could pull it off,â he commented, recalling a trailer he saw a few days back in the theatre, âI would have responded with something like âmy safe word is keep going,ââ Heath made his voice sound low and Vin Deisel-y to try and make the words sound more fitting, though he broke into a laugh immediately after they left his mouth. âBut Iâm not the kind of dude that could get away with that. Plus I donât think Iâd want toâŚâ he trailed off, imagining a few meat-heads at the gym who probably have said that before, and meant it completely. Heathcliff suppressed a small eye roll before refocusing on Maia.
She pulled something out of somewhere, but even as Heath squinted his eyes and did his hardest to focus on whatever was in her doll-like hand, though even his best efforts proved futile. âOh!â he exclaimed. âWell itâs a good thing I donât have the worldâs smallest key. I meanâ because Iâm not locked out. Though, even if I was, Iâm sure Iâd be able to knock it down with my new Hulk powers.â
Glancing down at himself, he noticed the chest pocket on his flannel and got an idea, looking to Maia with raised brows. âYou think you can fit in here? I think it could be the safest place, and I could get back to my place quicker if I knew you were okay in there.â
Maia bit her lip to keep from smiling at his surprised look. âNo offense, but you really arenât the kind of guy who could pull that off.â It was oddly comforting to know that he wouldnât want to say something like that.Â
âGlad to hear it, Heath,â Maia smiled. âI donât think it wouldâve been wise to try and knock down a door.â
Maia didnât know how to respond to the question. She could easily fit in the pocket, and it would make things quicker. âAll right,â Maia said. When she got in the pocket it was the strangest thing. She peeked out, holding onto the edge of the fabric tightly. Never had she imagined sitting in Heathâs pocket. That thought wouldâve never come across her mind even in her wildest dreams.Â
âHeath,â She shouted to make sure she was heard, âDonât bump into anyone, okay?â

âI think,â Heath began, thinking aloud, âIf I were radioactive, maybe Iâd taste it in my mouth, or something. Unless my lips arenât glowing. Are they glowing?â He slightly stuck out his lips, looking down to see if he could catch a glimpse. No use, however.
His eyes widened slightly at her request, shaking his head quickly. âNo! No of course I wonât. If Iâm ever too, uh, rough with you, just yell at me or something, okay? Because I donât wanna hurt you.â
Nodding, he realized it couldnât be just them. What were the odds that the both of them were having such supernatural days? âYeah, youâre probably right. But I mean⌠who would we ask?â His stomach growled slightly and he added more to himself than to her, âOkay now even those tiny waffles are sounding pretty good.â
Maia furrowed her eyebrows, âWhat would radioactive taste like?â she wondered and then added, âThey are glowing, too, by the way.â
âOkay. I trust you, Heath,â Maia said, her face moving into a smirk, âWhatâs our safe word, just in case you get too rough?â
âHmm,â Maia thought. They really couldnât just go up to anyone and say, âhey, whatâs going on with me?â for that might end badly. There were lots of people who seemed to know all sorts of things about the town; strange things. Maia didnât know where to find any of them and, at the moment, she was still concerned about shrinking until she was invisible. She trusted Heath not to crush her, but other people might not be as careful. Like, if he put her down in a restaurant, what if someone put a coffee pot on top of her?
âIâd offer to go back to my place and Iâd make breakfast and maybe we could call someone but...â She reached into her pocket and pulled out the mini key that she assumed Heath could barely see, âIâm currently locked out.â  Â

Heath had to listen closely and carefully as she spoke, her voice hardly carrying, though he managed to pick up pieces of what she was saying. âWhat?â He asked, his brows furrowing. âYou want Eggo waffles? I mean, do you want like a normal-sized one, or like a super crazy tiny waffle? I donât think they make those.â
It was then that he realized he could very well be talking too loud for her, bringing his volume down considerably. âRadioactive? Nah, Iâm notâ I mean, Iâm pretty sure Iâm not radioactive?â Heath ended the thought as a question, realizing he had essentially no idea how it happened.
âUh,â he began after a moment, having to make sure that he was speaking softly, âI guess it was sorta the same with your story. I know I wasnât glowing yesterday. But I woke up and instantly broke my bed. And then my doorknob. I donât really know how.â
Maia laughed. âTiny waffles would be amazing. Iâm thinking breakfast after we figure this out?âÂ
She decided to speak louder. She honestly had no idea if he could here her. He could a little, because he answered her questions.Â
âI hope you arenât radioactive,â Maia gave him a smile, âbecause that would imply that this town is more screwy than I originally thought.â
âAh, yeah, breaking beds and doorknobs is not really good,â Maia nodded, her brows furrowed a little in concern. âPlease, if you could, donât close your hand? I would really like to not be a pancake.â
She looked around. No one seemed to be paying them much attention. Almost like they thought it was normal for a thirty something year old guy to be talking to his hand. Maia wouldnât mention it though. âHeath, someone has to know whatâs going on. I like marvel as much as the next guy, but I really donât want to be Ant-Man being carried around all day by The Incredible Hulk.â

Maia gave him a smile she doubted he could see. "None taken. Today has been crazy."
"Yep," Maia nodded, a laugh coming out. "Spray tanned lighting bug; that's perfect. And, um, don't mention it? Sorry, I'm not really sure the protocol for pointing out someone is glowing..."
She climbed onto Heath's handâthat was probably the weirdest thing she ever didâand grabbed his thumb as he started to move. She felt like she was in the middle of an earthquake. She stumbled and landed with her tiny palms against his. Maia pushed herself up and looked at his eyes not far from her. Nice eyes, but almost creepy because they were as big asâif not bigger thanâ her head.
"No, no Alice in Wonderland for me," she laughed. "Just woke up a little slimmer and shorter than usual. It probably would've made more sense if my Eggo waffles made me shrink." She hoped he could hear her. She didn't want to scream. But she was definitely talking louder than usual. "What about you? How long have you been radioactive? I'm guessing this is a new development. How did that happen?"

Maia almost laughed with relief when she saw his familiar face. The guy from the park. The one who gave her back her wallet. She had heard his name at the gym one of the later days, when he was leaving. Heath? That mustâve been it.
âYes,â she called up to him. This seemed too weird to be real. âItâs me. I have no idea what happened.â She stepped back in order to see his face better. She wasnât even as big as his hand. âI donât know why Iâm mini.â She hoped she saw done shrinking. She watched his confused face and then realized something was off.
âUm, Heath,â she couldnât be seeing right. Well, she was three inches tall, so him glowing might have been normal too. âAre you aware of your⌠Glow?â She saw people passing by, almost glaring at her; or Heath. They probably couldnât see her.
A fear of getting squished was overwhelming her. âThis might sound⌠Unique, but could you pick me up?â She laughed, not sure if it was because it sounded ridiculous or because it was her way of dealing with the strangeness of the situation.
âI knew this town was weird but⌠This is a whole new level of crazy.â
When Maia responded, his eyes widened a bit further before he let out a huff of laughter, shaking his head. âMy gods, I thought today couldnât get any freakier.â Pausing a beat, he added, âNo offense. Itâs just been a weird day all around.âÂ
Maia mentioned his glow, causing his brows to lower into a confused scowl. âWhat?â he asked before looking down at his hands, his jaw dropping slightly. âI look like a spray-tanned lightning bug.â Heath had to take a deep breath to compose himself, refocusing on her. âNo, I wasnât aware of it. Uh, thanks.â
At her request, he nodded quickly and moved to extend his hand, his palm facing upwards. Normallyââ well, not normally, for this was far from a normal dayââ he would have picked her up himself, though after the morning heâs had, he had no desire to cause her to match the shape of his doorknob. âUh, all aboard,â Heath gave her a small grin before moving to stand on his feet.
Heath moved to sit on the nearest bench, holding Maia up eye-level as he inquired, âSo⌠did you just like, wake up super small? Or did you eat something, like Alice in Wonderland? Whatâd it taste like? He shook his head. âSorry. Ignore that last one.â

Maia didnât think much of her jeans being too long or a little too big. Maybe she had lost weight? She would weigh herself later. It became a little more puzzling when her shoes were too big. Her feet couldnât have shrunk. Could they?
As she made her way to her front door, the handle seemed higher. She opened the door, super confused. What was happening?
As she started walking into town, people around her started to look taller. Usually she was the tall one. Something strange was going on. She felt usually tired for the short distance she had gone. She leaned against something. She first assumed it was a street light. When she turned, she saw the bright red of a fire hydrant. She let out a little scream and fell back. That⌠Couldnât be possible.
âHey,â she called up to a passerby. He ignored her. She tried to catch up to someone. She kept getting smaller. She was glad her clothes had decided to shrink with her once they were on her body. It would be hard to buy doll clothes when a bill was the same size as her.
She felt like she had run a marathon, but she was barely five feet from the fire hydrant. She groaned and climbed up the bus stop bench. It seemed she had stopped shrinking. She caught her breath before stepping closer to the person, jabbing them in the leg as hard as she could, hoping they noticed her.
âHey,â she shouted. âCan you help me?â Not that they could, but maybe they could carry her to someone who could.
When Heathcliff woke up that morning, he sat upright and swung his legs over the edge of his bed, causing for one of the legs on the bed to snap, the bed falling lopsided. He frowned, standing up to further inspect it. âWhat theâŚâ he trailed off, thinking to himself, well that was unexpected. He wiped a hand over his face, groaning to himself as he realized heâd have to either figure out how to fix it or buy another bed frame altogether. He had no such money lying around to just buy a new one, and he did have some previous experience with construction. This would just be⌠a much smaller scale.
He decided to get ready for the day before making his way to the nearest supply store in order to fix his bed. When he grabbed the handle to his bathroom door, the metal knob crunched and shifted in his grasp. His brows furrowed as he released his grip and pulled away to see the once-round doorknob now a deformed hunk of metal. Huffing, he thought aloud, âDid I wake up in a toothpick world or somethingâŚ?â
Overwhelmed with confusion, Heath quickly washed up and got dressed without so much as looking in the mirror; if he had, he would have seen his skin beginning to glow faintly. Not in the joyous or adrenaline-filled way, either, but a literal, luminous glow. After he finished lacing up his sneakers, he set out on the town.
He felt some people staring at him, and silently chastised himself for not checking to make sure his hair wasnât too messy; or perhaps there was a stain on his shirt that he didnât notice. He quickened his pace, however, wanting to get back to his place to fix now two things he had broken somehow.
Heathcliff heard a quiet shouting, though he didnât suspect it was aimed at him and continued to walk until finally he felt the need to turn around. After all, whoever was yelling needed help, even if they didnât want his help in particular. When he turned around, he saw no one meeting his gaze, frowning to himself, Today is being really weird, man, he thought to himself. Heath saw movement in his peripheral and glanced down to see a small⌠human. Small enough to fit in his palm. His eyes widened slightly as he knelt down to get a better look, make sure this day wasnât getting to him. As he focused on the small being, he realized that itâ sheâ looked familiar. It was the woman he met in the park. What was her name again? He thought.
âMaia?â His brows furrowed in confusion. âMaia, is that you? Uh, whatâ what happened? Why are you⌠mini?â

Maia grinned. "My permit picture was even worse. I still had braces then and when I smiled a strand of my hair got caught in them. The person who was working was so obviously sick of little teenagers squealing over their permits so she didn't let me take it again. It was a horrifying picture. I'm pretty sure my mom framed it because it makes her laugh so hard." She smiled, internally shuttering at the memory of her picture.
"Bigger would be better. Not that size matters," Maia paused. She laughed a little, "The park is a good size."
Maia moved on quickly, trying to hide her heated cheeks. "It definitely is worth the detour. If I'm ever feeling stressed I like to come around here and decompress. It's amazing here. I come here on nice days. I suppose if I really do get the dogs I want then I'll come here almost every day. And I live not too far. Right around that way." She pointed toward the over grown path that let out by her neighborhood.
"I also like to come do my morning runs around here." Maia nodded. "It's super peaceful here in the morning. Barely any people." She looked around and then back at the man with a smile. "Not to pry, but where do you work?"
maiabyg-mythospines:
Being in the position she was job wise, Maia really didnât really have any needs to rush. Today, though, she couldnât stop. She had gotten up, gone for a run, got the groceries, watered her neighbors plants, gotten a quick meal, finished up adoption information to get the dogs she wanted, and was now headed out to get more aspirin for the pain. When she fell off her horse she didnât actually break her arm, but she did sprain it. It still hurt like nobodyâs business.
To catch a break, she decided to cut through the park. It was peaceful. She usually would have said hello to people, but she was in too much pain at the moment. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on things other than her arm. She did pretty well looking at the birds and watching some children play, until some jerk walked right into her, nearly knocking her down. Her arm started to throb. He didnât even apologize.Â
Feeling more exhausted than before, Maia slowed her pace. She just assumed this was a bad day. She almost expected it to get worse when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Maia turned, half hoping it was the guy coming to apologize.
She studied the man. He had kind eyes and he looked concerned. She almost didnât hear his question.
âOh,â Maia nodded, realizing what he had asked. She felt her back pocket. It was empty. âYeah, thatâs mine.â she opened it up to check that it was hers. She saw her id and then showed it to the man, âYep, thatâs me. Itâs an awful picture though.â She looked at the black and white picture. âBut itâs me.â
She gave him a smile, âThank you. You just made my pretty bad day a little bit better.â She decided her arm pain could wait. She stuffed her wallet in her pocket and stuck out her good hand. âIâm Maia. Itâs nice out here, isnât it? I love the park and I really should spend more time here. Do you come here often,â she gave a little laugh, âThat would sound completely different in a different setting.â She felt herself blush a bit at her own awkwardness and she smiled, hoping she wasnât scaring the guy.
Heath nodded and grinned when she took the wallet, glad that he could have helped with her day. He glanced to the ID picture when she showed him and waved a hand, his tone reassuring. âOh, câmon, itâs not that bad. When I first got my license, I was so freaked about everything that my eyes were bugged out. The first time I had to show anyone that picture I had to match the expression.â
He moved to shake her hand quickly, nodding at her question. âYeah, I like it here. I wish it were bigger, thoughâ not that itâs not already big, itâs a nice good size, but you know. Even bigger would be awesome.â He scratched behind his ear a moment, chuckling at her next question and shrugging, âEh, no worries, maâam. I didnât take it that way. Iâm here at least once a week, I think. I like to walk through here on my way home from work sometimes. Itâs not really on the way, but I mean, itâs worth it.â Heathcliff looked around them a moment before refocusing on her, his brows raising. âWhat about you?â

Heathcliff shouted goodbye to his coworkers over his shoulder as he exited the gym, shrugging on his worn, leather jacket and shoving his hands into the pockets. The cool air hit his face and he smiles faintly; the small chill in the air once the sun began to set always felt so refreshing after finishing up work. He decided to take the long route back to his apartment, or more rather an almost-complete circle. The Mythos Pines Park wasnât so much as on the way home as it was in the opposite direction of his work, however he never minded the walk, instead telling himself it was a cool-down workout.
Once he arrived at the park, he slowed his pace even more, leisurely making his way through as he looked over at the trees and fountains. Heath made sure to nod and smile in greeting to everyone he saw, even saying hello if he felt the person was paying enough attention to him. About halfway through the park, his foot accidentally bumped into a small object on the ground, kicking it forward a few inches. His brows raised slightly and he looked down to see a wallet. Eyes widening, he quickly reached down to pick it up, examining the outside to make sure he didnât scuff it before wondering if he should check for an ID. Not wanting to pry into someone elseâs personal belongings, he instead looked around and briskly made his way towards the nearest person, lightly tapping their shoulder with his free hand, holding up the wallet still with the other. With his tone concerned, Heath asked, âexcuse me, did you drop this?â
