How many women in the US do you think have some form of diagnosed disability? According to Marla Ahlgrimm, the answer is around 25%. This doesn’t mean, however, that a woman with a disability can’t be physically or emotionally healthy or lead a whole and happy life. She says that women with physical or mental distress should maintain the same general healthcare routine as other women along with any other care necessary to manage their symptoms.
Many Women Do Not Have Access To A Clean And Private Space To Handle Menstrual Hygiene
In the United States and other westernized countries, we tend to think of tampons, pads, and even comfortable underwear as a given. Unfortunately, it is not. Marla Ahlgrimm points out that women and girls of childbearing age throughout the world don’t always have the space to handle their monthly menstrual cycle in a dignified way. This is not only a problem in undeveloped nations, but also among the homeless population of the United States.
Menorrhagia Affects 10 Million Women
Approximately 20% of all menstruating women experience heavy bleeding that can be disruptive to their day. This is called menorrhagia, and, although there is likely no “cure,” a healthcare provider can offer management tips.
STDs Are Alarmingly Common
According to Marla Ahlgrimm, almost all women currently have, or will have, some form of STD. HPV is the most common of these, and many women don’t even know they are infected. Other common STDs include chlamydia and gonorrhea, which can trigger infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other issues if not treated.
The Opioid Epidemic Affects Women Just As Much As Men
Marla Ahlgrimm says that overdosing is another common issue among women, especially in a world where opioids aren’t quite as regulated as they should be. Opioid misuse begins with an honest and open conversation about the healthcare system. Marla Ahlgrimm also recommends that women who need routine painkillers work closely with their physician and/or behavioral therapist to help avoid addiction.
Domestic Violence Continues To Affect Women More Than Men

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, women tend to be the victim of rape and physical abuse perpetuated by their intimate partners more often than men. This is especially true of women with disabilities, who have a much higher chance of rape than those without. Approximately 40% of female rape victims are disabled. This is not to say that men are not victims, too. But, more often than not, sheer size and strength (due to the fact that men have more testosterone in their systems than women) keep men from becoming a victim of a woman. 
Marla Ahlgrimm says that women’s health is not just a matter to keep private. She says that having an open and honest dialogue and reducing some of the taboos around women-specific issues such rape and menstruation will go a long way toward furthering an understanding of what makes men’s and women’s bodies different.
