How does one bargain with a God like this, who, quid pro quo, ups the ante each time He answers one sign with another?

While guardian angels without number,
Guard you as you sweetly slumber."

Advent at the Caseys
Tears glimmered in everyone’s eyes. My mom, open-mouthed, whispered a high-pitch, “Sarah!” as I hugged and kissed my sister. Joy and Molly embraced in amazement. My dad, hovering the background, walked slowly toward his eldest daughter.
My sister is pregnant with her first child.
A moment of hope and excitement. All thoughts to the future! And yet, such a moment of joy sat squarely within a time of deep family pain. My dying grandfather sat in a hospital only 2 hours away. He was worn out and ill. Waiting.
And my father took it all in. How do you manage it all within the same weekend? How do you bear it when it all came so suddenly? How do you rejoice in the coming of your first grandchild and mourn in the loss of your last parent?
I believe that the season of Advent speaks meaning into such a moment of dark sorrow and powerful hope. Advent reminds us that we are positioned, however uncomfortably, between the  “Already” and “Not Yet.” Already, Christ has come to make all things right, and yet still Christ must come again to wipe every tear. He must come again, we whisper as we struggle to sleep.
It is our duty to cling to this hope, and still we must mourn for our broken, hurting world. We are to praise God for his good works and cry out in our pain. In it all, we wait expectantly.
As for our family, with sad and happy tears, we will wait this Advent season alongside our expectant Sarah.

O BE joyful in the LORD, all ye lands: * serve the LORD with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.     Be ye sure that the LORD he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; * we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.     O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name.     For the LORD is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Christians are known for a lot of things these days — being hypocritical, overly partisan, judgmental — but it’s not often for our love…. It’s one thing for us to love those who we naturally get along with — anyone can do that, Jesus cautioned (Matthew 5:46-47). The real test is whether even...

Thanksgiving
The annual rebirth of spring always reminds us of the resurrection that has given us new life. But so too we are encouraged in our faith by the coming of fall, for Scripture encourages us that though the grass may wither, and the flowers fade, the faithful promises and steadfast love of our Lord stand forever. Thus, it is in this harvest season that we once again count our many blessings.
