Presidio Modelo (model prison), Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. The circular building follows the “Panopticon” concept invented by Jeremy Bentham. Its simple centrifugal layout allows one watchman positioned inside the central tower to observe the activity in all prison cells at once. Even if the inmates don’t know if there is somebody present in the tower, they get a feeling of constant surveillance. Just like in today’s world of omnipresent digital scanning where one could be spied on at any moment without noticing it. This concept aims to produce a society of self-restriction rather than to impose authoritarian control. For more on that read Michel Foucault’s “Discipline and Punish”.
