Basement bathroom Renovation from scratch by Miracle Dream Homes
Tumblr media
As you can see from the before and after photos, this basement bathroom installation started with pretty much a clean slate. The basement had a plumbing stub out, which is different from the plumbing rough-in. Usually, when a builder leaves plumbing in the basement it’s a stub out, which means the plumbing comes from under the concrete slab in roughly the right location. Most of the time, the pipes must be properly re-positioned to the exact spot where the shower base, toilet, and vanity would have their final location.
A NEW ROUGH-IN FOR A 3 PIECE BASEMENT BATHROOM INSTALLATION.
To start this basement bathroom renovation, we called in our plumber Art from Summit Drain and Plumbing Services of Ottawa to relocate the placement of plumbing pipes, both drains, and supplies. We finished framing for a partition wall as well as bulkheads and framing for a sliding pocket door. New drywall was installed everywhere and finished to level 4 finish.
MAKE IT WARM AND COZY WITH A HEATED FLOOR FOR THIS BASEMENT BATHROOM RENOVATION!
We ran a dedicated electrical line for the heated floor, with its own panel breaker. For this basement bathroom installation, we went with a stand-up shower with an acrylic shower base coupled with DensShield/Aquadefence waterproofing on the walls. The highlights of the bathroom renovation are the subway-style tiles for the walls and large-scale tiles for the flooring. After painting and trimming, check out the final product!
Overall it took us about 2 weeks to complete this project and the overall cost of this project was just over $22,000 CAD.
Adding a clean and functional basement bathroom is an excellent investment and a great way to improve both the usability and value of your Ottawa home. Talk to us to see what we can do for your basement bathroom.

Showcasing a Stunning Bathroom Renovation in Ottawa by Miracle Dream Homes
Tumblr media
We are very happy to report the completion of another 3-piece bathroom renovation in an Ottawa south home.
Though it’s a very typical bathroom renovation project and 3-piece bathrooms are very common in modern construction, the project turned out to be quite a nice looking bathroom. It’s not a big bathroom, but it’s very cozy and clean and the client loved the way it turned out. We did too!
The scope of work included conversion from a bathtub to a shower; the customer opted for an acrylic shower base with tiled walls. We have installed a very functional tiled niche, and the choice of black hardware complements dark tile and glass sliding shower doors quite well too.
To contrast the darker tiles of the shower, the customer went with large and light floor tiles.
A white vanity that comfortably rests on a large tile floor brings the timeless resemblance of elegant bathrooms from the past enmeshed into a modern feel of larger tiles and light wall colours.
NOT JUST AESTHETICS! BATHROOM RENOVATION INVOLVES COMPLEX CONSTRUCTION TOO!
Besides the beauty of the finished work, a lot went into the installation of this Ottawa bathroom. Everything was waterproofed with Schluter systems membranes, the floor received its usual Ditra uncoupling membrane, and the walls were constructed with Schluter Kerdi membrane.
Due to COVID-related supply shortages, it’s been hard to get a hold of Kerdi boards as all Ottawa tile supplies are out of stock. So, we had to revert to the old techniques of installing a Kerdi membrane over the substrate, something we did 10-12 years ago before Kerdi boards came out. Oh, good old times!
After the demolition, we discovered that the existing subfloor was insufficiently supported and there was a lot of floor movement. So, prior to installing Ditra, we added support under the subfloor and reinforced it with a ¼” cement board. Yes, perhaps a total overkill. With Ditra and tiles over it, you can literally park a tank on top of that floor! No movements, no squeaks, just a beautifully clean and elegant bathroom that will serve our customer and their family and guests for many years to come.
Special thanks to our crew members, Oleg and Dimitry for their dedication and hard work. You build for a customer as if you are building for yourself, and that’s the key to a job well done. Thank you Art and Darryl for the plumbing work, and as always, thank you to Anatoliy for his electrical work done on this and all of our other job sites.

How Can I Add Storage to My Small Bathroom?
Is it possible to add some storage to a small bathroom or is it a contradiction in terms? In this short article, we will address how to maximize the storage in a small size bathroom and what one can expect as far as functional storage capacity during bathroom renovations in Ottawa.
Defining The Small Bathroom
Your bathroom may feel small, but it may be a standard size bathroom of 35 to 40 square feet. Small bathrooms are usually defined as anything smaller than 5 feet wide by 7 feet long. Fortunately, bathroom contractors in Ottawa can help you find options that fit your bathroom to make it more comfortable and functional.
What Type Of Storage Do You Want?
When you think of bathroom storage, you’re not usually thinking of general household items, but rather items that you would need for typical bathroom use. Towels, toilet paper, personal hygiene items, and yes, even Costco size shampoos and conditioners are generally on the list! Let’s look at the options for small bathrooms.
Vanities
Oftentimes, the biggest storage unit in a bathroom is the vanity. In a 7-foot bathroom with a 30-inch-wide tub or shower, not a lot of room is left over for the vanity. Vanities typically come in two types, wall mount and freestanding. A freestanding vanity will have more potential for storage than a wall mount, but you may get more space by utilizing organizers that maximize the storage space. Look for smaller vanities that won’t overwhelm your smaller bathroom.
Medicine Cabinet
Next, consider the use of a wall built-in medicine cabinet, or wall mount medicine cabinet. Though they do take away a bit from a clean and airy look of the bathroom, they also add a good amount of usable storage for your small items. All small medicine bottles, toothbrushes and pastes, skincare, etc., can be easily and comfortably stored in a medicine cabinet, which in turn will open up the space in your vanity for larger items.
Use Your Tub And Shower Area
Your tub and shower area can carefully be used as storage for your soaps, shampoos and conditioners, and some skincare products. The optional niches and shelves that can be installed right in a tub/shower area are a great idea and they free up both vanity countertop space as well as inside the vanity. The ability to install those depends on the type of shower finish you choose. In general, as long as you have interior walls and you are installing tile above your tub or shower, there should be a way to install a niche.
Custom Storage Options
If after exhausting these two main storage areas you still find yourself in need of more space, work with a designer who can help you customize your space with:
Wall mount cabinet above the toilet.
Linen towers can be installed on interior walls without electrical or plumbing.
Open wall-mounted shelves are also an option.
Bathroom Renovations Depend On Your Space
There’s no way around it—your bathroom installation in Ottawa will depend to a large extent on the size of your bathroom. Adding more storage into your bathroom will make it appear less airy and less clean, so you want to find a balance between storage and design.
Miracle Dream Homes can answer all your questions about renovating a small bathroom in Ottawa.

Is a shower better than a tub in my small bathroom?
Tumblr media
Often homeowners wonder if they should have a bathtub or a shower in their bathroom. In small bathrooms, it’s a very relevant question, but there’s no definitive answer. You need to think about the space you have available and what’s best for your family’s needs. Here are some pointers about what to consider during bathroom installations in Ottawa when choosing between showers and tubs.
What Are Your Bathroom Renovation Goals?
If you’re renovating your bathroom to sell your home, you want your bathrooms to appeal to a wide range of people. If the bathroom is being renovated for your family’s enjoyment and greater convenience, you want to make sure your bathroom fits your needs. The one rule of thumb you should keep in mind is that the house needs at least one bathroom with a tub. Choosing a shower or tub for the second bathroom can be a personal decision based on space and personal needs.
Showers Do Have More Benefits
Showers take up less space, but they also have other benefits. A shower is more energy-efficient, provided you take quick showers. If accessibility is an issue, or you’re thinking about aging-in-place modifications, showers are preferable to tubs. A well-designed shower can make it safer and easier for seniors or other individuals with mobility issues. Keep in mind that families with small children often prefer bathtubs.
Tub And Shower Options
Don’t go into your bathroom renovations in Ottawa with preconceived notions about what your bathroom can fit. Modern bathroom design offers a range of options that can fit into smaller spaces. If you’re trying to maximize space, you have many choices that can fit into your budget and meet your goals. Showers are the most practical, and because you have a lot of design choices, you can find something that fits your bathroom. If you really need a tub, there are ways to fit it in, but showers tend to be the better choice for smaller bathrooms.
At the furthest spectrum of shower options, you can have a full-out custom shower with tiled floor and tiled walls, such as what you can get with a Schluter shower system. These are the most expensive to build as they require the most premium materials and the most amount of skilled labour. However, they are also the most customizable when it comes to size and shape as well as the most beautiful. Custom showers are sometimes the only option for those of us who have mobility issues. They are also called barrier-free showers or ledge-less showers.
If the space is limited and you need to have a tub but want to use it as a shower, a combination or an alcove bathtub and water-proofed and tiled walls above will give you something we call – Tub/Shower combo. These are most common in modern homes and for a reason. They can be beautiful and practical. They are also fairly reasonable for the installation cost.

What Colour Can Make My Small Bathroom Look Bigger?
Tumblr media
Colour is a rather simple question that can often lead to a lot of confusion and worry. Here are some suggestions from bathroom contractors in Ottawa that will make the daunting task of choosing the colour for your small bathroom project an easier process.
If you’re choosing a wall colour, think about the other elements in your bathroom. If you have a white vanity and counter, you may want the walls to stand out by choosing a colour. In contrast, you can get a seamless look where your vanity blends into the wall without any lines, which can make your bathroom appear larger. Do you want your wall colour to complement the tiles? Keeping the same colour on the floors and walls is another trick to making the bathroom appear larger.
NATURAL LIGHTING ADDS AIRINESS
While you’re considering wall colour, you may want to think about the amount of lighting in the bathroom. Natural light or LEDs can make a space feel bigger, so if you want to use a darker shade as accents, make sure to have plenty of light to offset the heaviness. We recommend using dark colours minimally in a small bathroom instead of making them front and center.
Not sure you’re up to the task of choosing the wall colours during your bathroom installation in Ottawa? Our experienced team will gladly help you choose the wall colours based on the criteria we’ve talked about above. Just ask them. We at Miracle Dream Homes often help our clients to select the wall colour after the wall tile and the floor tile has been installed. Ask and you shall be given, as they say! We can answer all your questions about renovating a small bathroom.

How Bathroom Tile Can Affect The Cost Of Your Renovations?
Tumblr media
The types and size of the tile you choose can have different installation costs. With some bathroom contractors in Ottawa, not all tiles are installed at the same cost.
Here at Miracle Dream Homes, we have a standard tile size that can be found in our “Standard Items”, which are included with every quote we provide. In these Standard Items we have allocated that we do not charge any extras for tiles from 6”x6” to 24”x24” in size, and installation of the tiles are either straight or staggered based on the layout of the room. Complex patterns can also carry an additional cost.
Your bathroom tile will be part of your bathroom for years to come. Plan to spend time working on the design to make sure you understand the type of tile and installation that your contractor is using.

How Can I Make My Small Bathroom Look Better?
A small bathroom doesn’t have to appear small. Make your small bathroom appear visually bigger by simply keeping it as airy and open as possible. Light colours with a white ceiling and white trim trick the eye to think the space is larger. Experienced bathroom contractors in Ottawa have the creative design skills to give you more space by using the right fixtures and appliances that serve to reduce that cramped feeling in a small bathroom.
INCREASE LIGHTING IN YOUR SMALL BATHROOM
If you have a source of natural light in your bathroom, that’s great, but you still might need to bring in light sources from wall mount light fixtures, and recessed LED lights in the ceiling. Modern LED lights fit into many different places for added lighting that opens up spaces. Having mirrors, especially the modern LED mirrors bring not only functionality but also style, and they certainly help make the room look bigger. If your goal is a clean and airy bathroom and you need to choose between a mirror or a medicine cabinet with a mirror, a simple mirror will provide a cleaner look. During your bathroom renovations in Ottawa, it’s easy to install lights and mirrors.
BALANCE THE SIZE OF BATHROOM FIXTURES
An important component of making your small bathroom appear bigger and better is the choice of fixtures you make. The vanity and linen tower you install can make the space look big or small. Functional full-size vanities and linen towers provide plenty of storage space, but they can make the bathroom look and feel smaller. In your small bathroom renovation plan, you may need to choose what’s priority—will you sacrifice storage for looks and style, or vice versa? Custom bathroom installations in Ottawa can provide more options because you can fit the appliances or fixtures to the bathroom.
OPEN UP SPACE IN YOUR SMALL BATHROOM
Last but certainly not the least, removing unnecessary partition walls, enclosed spaces and bulkheads opens up the space dramatically. We have all seen bathtubs that have either tile or acrylic walls above it and a bulkhead above. Contrary to common thinking that it might be housing some plumbing or mechanical components, usually it’s empty! So, removing it and making a bathroom ceiling smooth and flush brings in a ton of light and space into the tub and shower area, especially if the tub is being converted into a shower and glass doors are being installed.
This brings us to the next and even more impactful possibility. Instead of having an alcove shower with three tiled walls, remove one partition wall, if possible, and have two tiled walls and a sliding glass door with a side glass return panel. This will open up the shower area dramatically and make your entire bathroom look and feel much bigger.
Of course, there are many more things to consider, but we have listed some key points to keep in mind when you want to make your small bathroom look and feel bigger than it is. Working with an experienced bathroom remodeler in Ottawa to plan your bathroom is a good start toward your goals. Contact us for more information.

HOW MUCH WILL THE LABOUR COST TO RENOVATE MY SMALL BATHROOM?
Bathroom installations in Ottawa vary in cost. You can expect to pay anywhere between $5,000 to $25,000 to remodel a small 5-foot by 7-foot bathroom. A professional bathroom renovation done by an experienced and reputable contractor will probably run between $12,000 to $13,000. It’s worth the investment to know that your bathroom is installed correctly.
On the low end, you can use an efficient handyman or plumber and perhaps DIY some parts of your renovation if you have the experience. Keep in mind though that even a few costly mistakes can make your renovation a stressful experience. Hiring a bathroom renovation contractor is the best option.

How to Save on Your Bathroom Renovation in Ottawa
Many of us dream of the perfect home, the perfect space, the perfect bathroom. Saving your hard-earned money for a bathroom renovation is a happy thought. But in the words of Willie Nelson, “We create our own unhappiness.” This blog post is not about music or the art of happiness, but it is about making sure your happy thoughts remain happy and your dreams turn to reality.
Saving on a bathroom renovation is something we all want to achieve. I don’t care if you are doing a big, elaborate bathroom with a $60,000 budget, or if you are trying to squeeze your bathroom renovation on a tight budget. Saving a few dollars while keeping the result both functional and beautiful is what most people want.
How do we do that? Many components compound the cost of bathroom remodeling or renovation, and we probably can write a small book on that. So, here are some useful tips that will certainly help you to save money on your next bathroom renovation in Ottawa.
KEEP THE EXISTING LAYOUT, DON’T CHANGE LOCATIONS OF YOUR PLUMBING FIXTURES.
When people think of bathroom renovations, they tend to move fixtures around the already busy and cramped space. Moving toilets, tubs, shower, and vanities around add to the cost of bathroom renovation significantly. So, if you can, keep things where they are.
USE IN-STOCK, GOOD QUALITY, NAME BRANDS FOR YOUR PRODUCTS.
Try to purchase your vanity, your tub or shower base, your mixing valve or other bathroom finishing material from the in-stock selection of your local retailer. Avoid custom orders, custom sizes, and custom work. The cost goes up significantly as soon as you make anything custom. It is very common to think that if you use a custom product, you will have a beautiful bathroom. About 70% of the bathrooms that we’ve done in the past decade were finished with in-stock products and looked stunning and functioned perfectly. The secret is putting everything together as one functioning package, as one seamless piece.
DO NOT DO THE WORK TWICE OR MORE.
Pay your tradesperson once to get the job done right. Make sure you do not try and self-manage the project, unless you’ve done that before and know what you are doing. An easy and on-budget project can easily turn into a nightmare if you start bringing different contractors and trying to connect all the dots yourself without the experience and knowledge of a general contractor. Find reputable bathroom renovation contractors in Ottawa and make them responsible for the entire project.
DON’T HAGGLE, ASK RESPECTFULLY.
You will be surprised how much people are willing to go your way when they feel appreciated and respected. Simply ask your contractor if any discounts are available. Show them that you are a good customer, pleasant and easy to work with and many, many contractors would be more than happy to find creative ways to save you some money.
TO SUMMARIZE, HERE ARE THE 4 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE ON YOUR BATHROOM RENOVATION IN OTTAWA.
1. Don’t change the bathroom layout, keep it as is.
2. Use good quality, in-stock materials.
3. Use one general contractor to manage the trades for the job.
4. Show your contractor that you are easy to work with and simply ask what they can do to reduce the cost.
Over the years, we have done many bathroom renovations and I have to say that each time I saw customers implement these basic steps, they not only have saved thousands of dollars but had an easy renovation with a great experience and beautiful results.
Here are some recent examples of bathroom renovations we have done with the above principles. Work completed in May 2021:
We encourage you to use our online contact form to get in touch with us to see how we can work within your budget to create a beautiful bathroom that you will love.

Capturing Beautiful in Simple – Custom Bathroom Renovations in Ottawa
As humans, we tend to overcomplicate things. For instance, we often think that to create something extraordinary, we need to build complex things and enlist elaborate designs and ideas. The most extraordinary creation is the world of nature around us, and yet the beauty that we are most attracted to in nature is the simplicity of it all. When customers talk to us about custom bathroom renovations in the Ottawa area, we guide them towards simple, yet stylish and trendy designs. Our goal is to help make your home more comfortable and convenient while reflecting your personal style.
EXAMPLE OF A CUSTOM BATHROOM RENOVATION—SIMPLE FORM, ELABORATE FUNCTION
When it comes to bathroom renovation, we often find ourselves overthinking simple things. With this project we wanted to emphasize that less is more. We followed the needs of the customer and build the bathroom around that. The customer wanted to have a clean, spacious bathroom that is easy to maintain and will hold its current clean and new appeal for a long time.
Here are some of the concepts we’ve used to bring functional beauty to this bathroom remodeling project:
We started with a 4-piece bathroom that included a drop-in tub, a small acrylic shower, a tiled floor and a 60” vanity.
After discussing the primary needs of the customer, we found that the tub was not often used, and the shower was more preferred. Following the principle of less is more and because the house already had another bathroom with a tub, we suggested eliminating the drop-in tub and created a large barrier-free walk-in shower with a glass panel and no door.
We used the space where the old shower was for a custom built-in closet. We kept the vanity size but upgraded to a new vanity with two sinks.
By not relocating major fixtures, we were able to avoid costly plumbing works. The entire bathroom was waterproofed with the Schluter family of products. We have used large-scale tile to keep the style with the current trends and to ensure that this bathroom will stay relevant for the next decade. As a final unseen to a naked eye touch, we’ve installed a heated floor. Simple improvement, great function!
If you have any questions regarding our custom bathroom renovation services, we would be more than happy to help. We encourage you to use our online contact form to get in touch.

Custom Bathroom Renovations in Ottawa to Suit Your Needs
One of the most common reasons homeowners in Ottawa renovate their bathrooms is to suit specific needs or requirements. As age catches up to us, bathrooms with a spacious shower and easy entry become more desirable than traditional bathrooms with bathtubs.
It has been a popular trend in the past decade to convert a drop-in bathtub into a spacious walk-in shower. We have also had many customers converting a 4-piece bathroom into a 3-piece bathroom with oversized shower. This is a great choice, and it creates a wonderful spa-like experience.
HOW WE IMPROVED THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THIS BATHROOM
In this particular example, we worked with a lovely couple from Kanata and their 4-piece bathroom that consisted of drop-in tub, vanity, toilet and neo-angled acrylic base and acrylic walls shower.
We discussed their needs and after some planning and executing we were left with a beautiful final product of a spacious 3-piece bathroom with a large custom shower.
As always, we used the Schluter family of products throughout the entire bathroom for waterproofing and tile crack prevention. We added some small details on a choice of accent tile for the walls of the shower and a convenient built-in wall niche. .
Our customers also showed us where they wanted to have grab bars to allow for greater ease and accessibility into the shower. We are in love with the result and are very excited to share these final photos of the project. This project turned out beautiful and will serve our customers well for years to come.
To see how we can improve the functionality of your bathroom to suit your needs and discuss your next bathroom renovation, we encourage you to use our online contact form to get in touch.

Renovating Your Ottawa Home During COVID-19? Learn How to do it Safely
Tumblr media
One of the very common questions I get these days from our customers is, “How does your home renovation crew work during a pandemic?” Probably 90% of people who call us from our website inquiring about a bathroom, kitchen, or basement renovation in Ottawa, ask this question.
There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted everyone in Ottawa as well as every home around the world. From stay-at-home orders to limited capacity, many measures were put in place by the government as well as each individual company to protect its clients and workers. We are no exception to that.
From simply following the Ottawa public health agency rules to specific instructions and clauses in our estimates and contracts, we have adjusted to the new reality of living and working in this pandemic.
If you are renovating your Ottawa home during COVID-19, rest assured that there are ways to do it safely and efficiently. So, here are some basic steps we at Miracle Dream Homes take to ensure we do our part in solving this problem as well as serving the needs of our clients, in Ottawa, Ontario.
HOW DOES MIRACLE DREAM HOMES PERFORM RENOVATIONS IN A PANDEMIC?
For starters, we follow every basic measure suggested by the Public Health Agency of Canada. We adhere to the “Core 4”, i.e.,
Social distancing,
Wearing face masks,
Washing and sanitizing hands,
And disinfecting all surfaces that are touched.
When COVID-19 started, we adopted these safe practices and have been working under them ever since.
VIRTUAL QUOTE FOR HOME RENOVATIONS DURING COVID-19 IN OTTAWA
One of the best examples of this is our system of providing a virtual quote to clients. Instead of coming to your home and increasing the risk of potential exposure, we now have virtual meetings where we are able to accurately assess the space in your bathroom or kitchen. We evaluate the scope of work and provide you with a quote without stepping foot into your home. Surprisingly, it is very accurate as most projects such as bathroom renovations in Ottawa, are for the most part, very similar in nature. Not every quote can be done this way, but we have been able to reduce a large number of home visits and thereby, also the potential for any spread of COVID-19.
HOME VISIT BEFORE COMMENCING A HOME REMODELING PROJECT IN OTTAWA
Following the virtual quote and when the client wants to proceed with their Ottawa bathroom renovation project, we do make a home visit. During the visit, our associate asks homeowners to keep the distance and wears a mask as well as sanitizes any surfaces that are touched while she is taking measurements and preparing a final estimate. The signing of this final estimate/contract is also now done electronically. All these small but significant steps go a long way in ensuring safety and well-being of both our clients and our team.
CLOSE COLLABORATION WITHIN YOUR HOME RENOVATION TEAM
Another measure that we have implemented is that every morning before the start of the day, we have a company call, where every worker must report to our office with either negative or positive COVID symptoms. If no symptoms are present, we proceed with the day’s work, but if we suspect any possible symptoms, we will not send our workers to our customers’ home. With every job, we ask our customers to do the same; if they suspect any symptoms or are in contact with anyone who shows symptoms, the project will be put on hold until it is safe to proceed.
I have to say that we were lucky not to have any one of our crew members test positive so far.
STRINGENT SAFETY PROCEDURES
We have added stipulations into our estimates and contracts outlining the proper procedures of how the work for renovating your home during COVID-19 will he handled. So far, we have received very positive feedback from our customers. The fact that we have not had any cases amongst our crews or staff are proof that by working together and following guidelines, we can not only help our customers with their home renovation needs but also be part of the solution in stopping the spread of this virus.
It has not been an easy process and the COVID-19 pandemic definitely has impacted how we do business. We have seen shortages in materials and delays in deliveries of products. The prices for some of the common materials have fluctuated significantly over the last year.
I am however optimistic that by working together with our suppliers, crews, and our customers, we can still get extremely good results, maintain reasonable prices and timelines, and above all, keep people safe and continue to work going forward.
Give us a call to learn more about how we can safely and efficiently renovate your Ottawa home during COVID-19. Or you can use our online contact form to get in touch.
