"Do you feel an intense weight on your shoulders too? You know, because of our profession..."
bad days at work happened to everyone. the infantry was no exception to this rule. by good fortune, mirae’s leave arrived just in time, which allowed her to relax and recover — next to a few drinks of soju and the commanding officer. not that it was advisable to get inebriated in front of your superior, but trust existed between them.
“sir, i mean, ju,” sunny stumbled over her words, trying to figure out how to address him without uniform. "the weight ofyour shoulders is nothing compared to mine, which is reasonable. look at your back, now look at mine. I can’t carry as much,” alright, perhaps that was not funny, but her point still stood, metaphorically at least.
“yes, sometimes i feel what i do is not enough,” she finally agreed in silence.

"why do you like being a soldier?"
eighteen-year-old mirae, a mere recruit, would have replied to this question withthere is nothing to dislike or like, i just have no other option. the only truth. nevertheless, whether a product of her own realization or strict military discipline, the girl found her calling in the army. for this reason, it was easy to rise through the ranks.
“i can help people and serve my country, sir. i am extremely happy with my duties,” mirae saluted the president out of habit. she found herself resourceful, despite of the handbook answer. maybe she was a tiny gear in the grand scheme of things, but at least she was doing good and well. she had something to be proud of.
“by the way, i am not drunk at all, sir. my five senses are working just fine. want me to show you whyi own marksmanship competition badges?” mirae reached out for the pistol near her thigh, before realizing there were no targets to shoot at. a silly laugh escaped her lips. “maybe outside.”

Have you ever had to kill people because of your job?? Would you, if you had the opportunity to?
the question came as a surprise, but there was no need to lie about something quite evident. civilians were meant to rest assured that the new armed forces had changed, in the name of justice. enforcing and compelling compliance without regard for the law were issues of the past. even the procedures to deal with rebels were modified.
“an enemy killed in action? never. those missions are rare,” she was firm, regardless of the effects of alcohol. military training gave her the skill of fighting while partaking in combat, which could result in a fatality. so far, in her career as a soldier, the participation in hostilities was almost null. at that moment, she found it difficult to come up with statistics to explain.
“although it is not as direct as you might think. not at all! it’d happen only on command and following the rules of engagement. because court-martials exist, you know? unless you are talking about a life-and-death situation,i believe my instincts would just come out,” she made a jabbing motion, like a demonstration in font ofnoeul.

medal of honor.
few things in the military are celebrated with as much excitement as promotions. for mirae and her family, each and every promotion represents a big deal, and is celebrated as a special day. she is well aware that with every new rank, responsibilities and expectations increase, but also the pay received. the change in monetary benefits is always welcomed.
she lets her parents knows as soon as non-commissioned officers' names are released, including hers. however, this specific ceremony gives plenty to talk about. the recently elected president, park eunjae, is to be present at the event and do the pinning honors. this action even draws attention from the press, who are allowed into the army base.
the current sergeant was chosen from a pool of soldiers by a special board, for her skills, accomplishments, and seniority. mirae is still young, but about to hit the mark of almost six years of service in the army. her career has great potential, according to what her superiors say. thus, she intends to focus all of her efforts on ascending the chain of command.
not only is her promotion the motive of recognition, since she is also being awarded with a decoration. ever since the great divide happened, the objectives of the armed forces shifted, perhaps for good. instead of receiving medals for participation in military expeditions involving conflict, the ones she bears are related to her humanitarian service (quite needed in her field) and competitions.
mirae quickly inspects her general appearance before joining the rest of the group. it barely takes her second. today, she is wearing her service uniform: green skirt and jacket, with her nameplate and ribbons in place, alongside the army beret. it remains all clean and pressed, as she waits to be called and stand in formation for the most anticipated moment.

joon2056·:
since the great divide had started and joon had been living in the outskirts of the city, even though it was to be thought that everything would be a big mess with people running around the whole place, he actually always saw the same faces. after a while he got used to it, and slowly developed friendships or at least acquaintances with the other people who would roam around. surely at first he’d fight with others about food and water, but since the green party had came to power, the situation had definitely calmed down with volunteers walking around and distributing a few of the necessities.
joon remembered that just a few months ago, there were soldiers patrolling the outskirts, some of them rather rough, shouting and sometimes even just attacking people for no reason. now that had kind of stopped, but joon knew that not everyone was like that. specially mirae. at first he had wondered what such a petite, cute, young woman was doing within the forces, but after a while he had his answer. the female was goal oriented, straight forward, strong and definitely knew what she was doing. he didn’t want to mess with her.
as he sat outside on the ground, his shirt had been taken off and wrapped around his head, to save himself from the rays of sun, he just let his hands run over the sandy surface of the earth. too dry. but as he lifted his head, he spotted the soldier walking around; “hey! mirae!”, he shouted over to her, waving his arms to make her come by.
if it would have been any other soldier, he would never dare, as he was sure that they would pollute his brain with crazy government ideas or force him to do something that he doesn’t want to do, but with mirae he was sure that she wouldn’t do anything like that. it was more like him trying to get some informations out of her –– even though his ideas seemed far too off for any of those questions to be even close for her to be answered.

as he watched her approach, joon held up his bottle of water, offering it to her. after all, the weather was almost unbearable today.
“how is your today?”
going from point a, seoul’s army base, to point b, damsu’s facilities in incheon, sometimes proved to be hard work. plenty of dangers lurked the way, although any soldier was trained to overcome them. the extreme weather was the most hazardous on the list. as she reached a well-known zone, according to her gps, mirae parked her vehicle and decided to continue on foot.
if she were not aware of the places that joon frequented, she would have confused him with a preacher. those individuals wearing clothes taken from a post-apocalyptic film, offering you salvation in exchange for repenting of your sins. as far as she was concerned, she did not have enough misdeeds to go to hell. without question, you always met the strangest personalities beyond borders.
mirae walked towards the man, whose arms danced energetically through the air. she removed the sunglasses from her face, to better appreciate the improvisation of clothes on his head. not very useful, was her verdict. mirae took off her cap and offered the hat to him. it crossed her mind to give him one of the sunscreen sticks she was carrying, but instead decided to only reprimand him about being out here in the infernal sun, like he was any other civilian.
“thank you. keep it,” she rejected the bottle with damsu‘s fancy typography written over the label. “i have my own ration,” mirae pointed at the surplus in the back of her luv. it was equipped with enough hydration sacs, courtesy of the same (and only) business — also taking care of our armed forces in the field, or at least that was how she remembered the campaign went.
“on my way to work,” the beretta near her hip gave it away in a direct manner. her whole attitude, in reality. it was the martial pose, even though tranquility reigned around them. “i plan to reach my destination at 1300, but decided to visit you and say hi,” mirae took a seat next to joon, in the arid soil that adhered to her uniform. stops were not planned, unless an emergency took place. however, none of them would speak a word of her break.

hi! this is itzel, bringing another character (to pretend i know how to write).
her blog is empty lmao so let me introduce her real quick.
kang mirae, twenty-tree, staff sergeant, 52nd homeland defense infantry division
rural girl, whose family business (fishing) went downhill during the great divide
money was lacking so she and her brother decided to join the army to get a stable job
their logic was that going to school and then being employed would take time (HUNGER) & i also have this idea of the government recruiting people to keep things in order because everything was a mess
so 18 year old mirae ended up a recruit in an army base and went through gruesome training for her parents
pay was low but at least it was something - things got better as she was promoted
her first tasks involved dealing with rebels and operations to reintroduce people to the city
with the new rank she gained 5 months ago, she was able to move within the city for operations (her family also lives there now)
the army is her life and she knows how to get the job done – she especially likes it since she feels helpful
while on leave, her disciplined habits are impossible to get rid of, but she enjoys spending time with her friends and family
idk i spent an evening researching the rok army let's try to plot (?)
