a possibility could be this:
the brightwell’s are well known and i wouldn’t put it past them to stage something shortly after the event. like you guessed: going to fight against the welsh. this explains his absense for a month, maybe two and also allows callum to say his son wanted to fight for his country and wanted to be noble—it gives him more leverage to make his family seem more honorable than they are and gives him a spot of trust in the social hierarchy of sorts. and then they stage the untimely and tragic death of their eldest, lost in the fight to the welsh. it brings up amounts of grief from trusted trading partners for goods and further stabilizes that position they’ve gained because now they’re just a family who lost a son in a tragic but noble incident.. c. brightwell’s certainly wealthy enough to pay someone to write a document that seems official enough. they would have a closed casket funeral and worst of all it would maoe sense. there’s no way to recover his body in the middle of a literal war. hell, i’d go as far as to say they had a whole mourning period for him, too (fake of course, only foe the benefit of the public because brightwell’s cant be seen as weak-backed people.) jess and brendan would likely be told to sell the lie the best they can, though how they fared we can only guess based on characterizations of them now.
as for like officially to those he knew as a market trader, i cant say much. but this is such an interesting train of thought, genuinely!
Random angsty fandom thought before I try to sleep (hello and fuck you 1am):
Liam was hanged. His father didn't 'step up to identify him' and as a result he was chucked into a mass grave. All right.
But like... The Brightwells had a cover story. A cover life. A comfortable, nay aspirational middle class family with a London town house, a housemaid and a parlourmaid (mentioned in Ink and Bone). Callum is a 'successful importer of goods'. Liam's absence - the eldest son - would have been noticed.
What stories did the family have to tell? What were 10 year old Jess and Brendan ordered to say? That Liam had gone travelling? Gone to fight the Welsh? That he'd drowned in an unfortunate accident, no you can't see the body, it's a closed casket funeral (where everyone is in the pay of the Brightwells.)
Idk. Just some thoughts.

“Dario glared at Khalila, a thing Jess had never seen him do, and Khalila held the stare firmly. She might be a quiet girl, but shy? No. She didn’t back away from a fight.”

today i am going insane about Dario, who, having just been told that he can't usurp Khalila's Archivist authority to keep her safe, immediately takes the opportunity to fling himself at a lethal automaton in order to "prove my worth".
Dario . There are roles in relationships between the poles of "man protect woman" and "man die for woman". And bravery isn't suicidality. FFS. You have worth beyond your ability to keep her safe. i am going insane.
PS: Khalila is no better. She resists being controlled and "protected" but throughout the series she does react positively to Dario putting himself on the line for her. She's definitely got a few internalised romanticised notions going on.

“Thomas’s fingers were restlessly exploring the metal parts in his hands, and he lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “You are my best friend,” he said. “And I will always fight for you.” As simple as that.”

The rest of the Wolfe Pack definitely makes fun of Jess’ accent/slang. Especially Dario.
While I am all for Dario making fun of Jess, and everyone irl making fun of us Brits tbh, it is interesting to remember that the only native Greek speaker in the gang is Wolfe. All of them have weird accents/dialects! (Now I want to see Wolfe teasing them at a group dinner or something)

“Reply from Callum Brightwell [in response to a message sent from the Archivist in Exile]
Don’t bother. You’ve promised me enough favors and ransoms that I should own the Great Archives, and the Great Library itself, four times over. If you’re still lingering in Alexandria and not dead on a gallows by the time of my son’s funeral, then I may yet hold you to account and get some value out of you. Touch my other son and die.”

“…the Archivist needed to know when the Brightwells held a grudge, they nursed it like a treasured child. He wanted that so much he was willing to die for it. Reckless, like his brother. Brave, like his brother. Dead like me, too, he heard Brendan whisper. You can choose your own path. You always have. Don’t follow me into the tomb, Jess. Jess had never let his brother tell him what to do.”
