how do you feel about how Elle was written off? I know she was struggling with trauma but it all felt very inconsistent with her character. I know they had to get her outta there for whatever reason but idk I felt like it was such a 180. just curious for ur opinion 😁

honestly i KIND of liked it…. like she was traumatized and people weren’t really taking her seriously and it reached a boiling point. i don’t rlly think she was in the wrong tbh, and at least she went out with a bang (literally)

idk i loved the angst of it all and it gave us reid showing up to her hotel room in the middle of the night and drinking with her so😁😁😁 big fan of that!!! #i think they did it but i just can’t prove it

i also appreciated that she cut her long pretty hair off cause she was having a crisis like me too girl

I love this analysis sm-

I also kinda sorta ship Spencelle in a “I think they did it and I’m not sure it was romantic” type of way. But 100% agreed- there’s no way Elle was trying to hint to him that he should ask her out. Her most established character trait- directly and indirectly- is her impatience. I can’t think of a single situation on earth where she’d just sit around and kind of throw hints, it’d be extremely ooc.

But also- I love this scene because it highlights how Elle sees Spencer in a way that the others don’t- esp in season 1.

He’s just a guy.

Yes he’s young, but so is she. He’s a bit naive, but so is she. He’s newer to the BAU, but she’s the newest. They’re on the most even playing field. Even if you headcanon autistic!Reid (which I definitely do) Spencer is still just a guy.

It reminds me a lot of the scene where Elle is profiling the unsub, and she brings up all of these characteristics like antisocial, not a lot of friends, bad with women, etc. It’s where Spencer kind of stares at her after she’s just described someone exactly like him.

Because the thing is- she immediately goes “and he’s a total psychopath, of course” as a form of apology, to make it clear that she didn’t mean to describe him. And I think it’s bc she genuinely doesn’t see him nearly as socially incompetent as he sees himself. It doesn’t even occur to her that she’s describing Spencer until he points it out.

Am I saying she doesn’t see those things in him? That she thinks he’s Derek? No, she’s not stupid. But I do think she sees him as a fundamentally more “normal” person than the S1 others, and I think it’s what makes their relationship so meaningful- platonic, romantic, sexual, whatever.

I love this scene a lot and it lives in my head rent-free. I can't really think of another way to interpret it other than that this is elle telling reid that the reason he can't get a date isn't because of something wrong with him that he needs to change but simply because he doesn't ask people out (or, more broadly, lacks confidence).

I have seen some spencelle shippers read this as elle saying "hey. ask me out" but i disagree, not because i don't ship spencelle (i sort of do, elaboration in the notes) but for the following reasons:

I think elle would have realised very early on that if she was going to wait for reid to ask her out, she would be waiting years

i don't think she gives enough of a fuck about gender roles to wait for The Man to ask her out

she generally seems confident

i lean more towards her being very new to the BAU in the early episodes. I don't recall right now if there's an official anti-fraternization policy or if that's a fanfiction trope, but even if there isn't, entering a relationship with a coworker that early on is an easy way to mess up her career.

i think she was waiting until she was more established to start anything, but then, well, everything happened, and she left before becoming established enough to feel comfortable taking a risk like that

Don’t think about how despite his good intentions, Reid trying to soothe her by saying “you won” only confirmed that the others wouldn’t understand

Don’t think about Gideon calling Elle impatient, Elle talking about how seeing rapists walk made her want to explode, how Hotch said that feeling wasn’t that far off from murder

Don’t think about how Elle was genuinely trying so hard for so long and how she deserved so much better than to be the tragedy she is
