I am just. So weirdly tickled by this Watcher situation. Like yes, initially I was very disappointed and upset but honestly now I just think it's funny. I can't remember the last time a creator or group of creators misread the room this hard. Like they really thought they were cooking with this one. They had a countdown to this. They announced their paywalled streaming service with their whole chests and expected rapturous applause. Instead, there has been a non-stop chorus of boos and thrown tomatoes for days now. They would have probably gotten a better reaction if they had posted a video where they sprayed a dog in the eyes with soapy water.

It's all so pleasantly... low-stakes. The consequences are nonexistent. It's not like the Ned Fulmer situation, where a friend group is destroyed, real life relationships are ended, and young children are potentially subjected to the trauma of divorce. Nah, all that's happening here is three idiots will be making a lot less money than they wanted. Maybe they'll learn something, maybe they won't. Either way, they brought it entirely upon themselves, and that makes it okay to laugh at in my books. So I will!

Lmao, they botched the announcement so hard that drama YouTube has now picked up on it. Good lord.

Like, regardless of how I feel emotionally, from a pure business perspective, they have fucked up just about every part of this so far. Unclear messaging making it look worse than it is, a failed attempt to frame themselves as underdogs, the massive buildup to the announcement making sure they had as many eyes on them as possible as they misread the room, alienated a huge portion of their audience, and took a direct hit to what was formerly the biggest asset to their brand; their likability as people.

As strange as it sounds, at this point, I genuinely think they might as well go through with it. The damage is done, there's no walking it back. Look at the comments for the announcement; there's a bunch of people who now see Watcher as just a bunch of greedy assholes. If they cave now, nobody will see it as an innocent mistake. They'll see it as them trying to pull some shit and getting shouted down. Once the illusion of "my fun internet buddy" is broken, there's no restoring it.

I'll be interested to see them try though. Because the damage control is coming, make no mistake. This just got way bigger and way worse for them than they clearly expected.

PSA: Don't use Open Office

I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.

Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.

Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!
