I'm agaist the grain here, but I'm very happy about Watcher going solo. While I understand it is a necessary evil, I hate advertising so much. And the ''in house'' ones are the worst. I hate that companies make the artists do the spiel themself. While the artists I support, including Watcher, usualy deal with the good ones (by good I mean at least not harmfull) and get really creative and funny with it, I hate that they have to do that. Youtube is a big machine. Being able to be independent from it is a big deal. Remember the adpocalypse? Ever seen a creator get his whole work vanished? Not having to worry about their terms of services, strikes, algorythm… Not relying on YT's ad revenue, wich by the way not being a family friendly channel (they curse, drink…) probably don't get them the highest rate I assume, not relying on the algorythm's feel of the day, huge deal. I think they are extremely creative and talented people, and having all the creative freedom that being independent gives them can only be a good thing, given they achieve their financial goals. And I don't think it's a greedy move. First of all, I don't think they are greedy people. Second, well the prices are very reasonable. 6$ a month, it's less than the price of a Starbuck coffee. I get that it adds up, the subscription fees. I get that some people can't afford any subscription. Here's a tip though, when I have some time off, I pay for a month of a thing, binge watch the content, leave it for a while, repeat. They create good quality content, it's expensive to produce. Maybe YT was just not sustainable, I don't know, but it's a possibility that it is an alternative to closing shop. Surely they studied their audience and concluded that amongst all the yelling, enough of their fanbase would be willing to jump on board to make it possible. Be it by necessity or by conviction, it's their choice and their content, nobody is entitled to get free content and nobody is forced to pay. I'm sure they anticipated some yelling but my god it's so loud. Hope they're ok.
