Watch: Creepy 2-Minute Horror Short 'Drip' Directed by Brian Lipko
It's the middle of the night, it's dark, the light in the hall doesn't work, you need to run to the bathroom. Can you make it? Drip is a two-minute short film directed by filmmaker Brian Lipko, who has been making a number of impressive short films in the last few years (see his Vimeo page). It's about a young boy who is afraid of the dark, but is there actually something out there? We've featured a number of excellent 2-minute horror short films before, including Salt and Tap just last year. It's tough to make the horror elements work well in two minutes, but these filmmakers are proving it's possible to pull that off and give us a good scare. ›››

Horror 'Hallowed Ground' Trailer Puts Us in the Middle of a Blood Feud
"Our neighbors are vehemently possessive of their land…" Uncork'd Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Hallowed Ground, the latest from filmmaker Miles Doleac (of The Historian, The Hollow, Demons). Described as "in the tradition of The Green Inferno and Deliverance," the film is about a married couple that travels to a secluded cabin in hopes of rebuilding their relationship. They stumble into a blood feud between the Native American owners of the property and the neighboring clan, who obsessively guard their land and punish those who trespass on it in terrifying ways. Starring Ritchie Montgomery, Lindsay Anne Williams, Sherri Eakin, Miles Doleac, Jeremy Sande, and Cotton Yancey. Looks a bit too extreme and cult-ish and masochistic for my tastes, but horror fans may be into it. ›››

Official Trailer for Amazing Springsteen Musical 'Blinded by the Light'
"I can feel it all right here! It's like Bruce knows everything I've ever felt." Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for Chadha's Blinded by the Light, the triumphant, instant-classic musical comedy about a teen from England who loves Bruce Springsteen. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to universal acclaim, being heralded as the next great indie musical following Sing Street. Inspired by a true story, based on Sarfraz Manzoor's acclaimed memoir, the film is about a Pakistani boy named Javed who finds his own voice and his own identity after being introduced to Bruce Springsteen growing up in the 1980s. Blinded by the Light stars Viveik Kalra as Javed, plus Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Ganatra, Nell Williams, Aaron Phagura, Hayley Atwell, and Dean-Charles Chapman. This was one of my favorite films from Sundance this year (here's my full review), it's so wonderful and will leave you with a huge smile. ›››

New Trailer for 'Avalanche' Starring Stelio Savante & Autumn Withers
"Why do you always take his side?" Indie Rights has released a new official trailer for a relationship drama titled Avalanche, which has been confirmed for a release this year. From writer & director Todd L. Green, the film is about a librarian, his wife, and her lover who become trapped in a house together and are forced to deal with the fallout of their indiscretions. This stars Stelio Savante, Autumn Withers, and Gideon Emery in the three lead roles. We featured the first trailer last year, but now that it has distribution they've pulled that and replaced it with another trailer. This looks super low budget, and still feels like a stage play more than a feature film, but hopefully it has enough intriguing relationship drama to pull some viewers in. ›››

Trailer for 'I'm Going To Break Your Heart' Doc About Musicians in Love
"You get to express your feelings all the time…" Level Film in Canada has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary titled I'm Going To Break Your Heart, a film about love and the tough relationship between two popular Canadian musicians. Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk have been together for years, and although they've made plenty of music on their own, they haven't worked much together. After nearly two decades and three children, the two have decided to examine their relationship and how they can patch things up. Filmed on France's isolated but very romantic Saint Pierre et Miquelon island in the dead of winter, the documentary immerses viewers in their musical relationship, even as it exposes long-standing wounds and unresolved heartache. Through this process they work to make their first real album together. ›››

Tiya Sircar in First Trailer for Netflix's 'Good Sam' Set in New York City
"There are way more people out there doing good." Netflix has debuted the trailer for an indie drama titled Good Sam, directed by Kate Melville. The film about a good samaritan nicknamed, of course, "Good Sam", who starts leaving bags of $100,000 on doorsteps in New York City. A TV reporter named Kate Bradley is sent to investigate the mystery, which ends up turning her whole life upside-down. This is one of those funny concepts that on paper sounds like it could be a horror, or a thriller, or a dramatic thriller, with some crazy big twists and turns. But this trailer actually makes it look like a light-hearted uplifting romance, and it seems she's going to fall in love with (or discover something else wonderful) about this "Good Sam". Tiya Sircar stars as Kate, with a full cast including Chad Connell, Marco Grazzini, Mark Camacho, Elana Dunkelman, Daniela Sandiford, Jesse Camacho, Kenny Wong, and Robert Crooks. Give it a look. ›››

First Trailer for Alexandre Aja's Hurricane + Alligators Movie 'Crawl'
"I can distract them for you!" Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for the summer horror movie Crawl, the latest from French horror filmmaker Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha 3D). The movie is about a young woman who, while attempting to save her father during a Catagory 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped in a flooding house and must fight for her life against alligators. Starring Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper, with Ross Anderson, Anson Boon, George Somner, and Ami Metcalf. This definitely does look like a gnarly "nail-biting horror thriller" and instead of sharks this time (much like Deep Blue Sea), it's alligators (or crocodiles, though in Florida, it's definitely alligators). This really does look intense and fun, it might actually be a good summer horror movie. Dive in. ›››

Watch: Trippy Animated Short 'Albatross Soup' is a Fun Thinking Puzzle
"A man walks off a boat. He walks into a restaurant and orders albatross soup. He takes one sip… pulls out a gun, and shoots himself to death. So… why did he kill himself?" That's the "thinking puzzle" question at the heart of this enthralling, fun animated short film. Albatross Soup is written and directed by Hong Kong born, Queens raised, and Brooklyn-based filmmaker Winnie Cheung, and it played at a number of major film festivals before arriving online to watch. Over 50 people were recorded trying to figure out the riddle using only "yes" or "no" questions. The mesmerizing animation is a visual representation of the riddle unraveling as we hear different questions and answers as to what's the real story. Not only is this short film entrancing to watch, it's quite fascinating to try to solve out the riddle with them - which is tragic in the end. ›››

Trailer for Serial Killer Thriller 'Mollywood' Directed by Morocco Vaughn
"They're all living for pleasure… it's like a disease." Momentum Pictures has debuted the trailer for an indie horror-thriller titled Mollywood, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Morocco Vaughn originally from Chicago. The film is about a psycho serial killer who disguises himself as a drug dealer in order to "deliver" young people their worshiped drugs at parties. Vinicius Machado stars as Zach, a determined detective trying to track him and catch him before he kills more. Also starring Anastasia Zorin, Harold Dennis, Micah Fitzgerald, Billy Dec, Waka Flocka Flame, Arianna Lexus, & Kimberly Michelle Vaughn. This looks hyper violent and intensely terrifying, but that could be because there's some intense EDM music in it. This might actually just be so crazy that it might turn out pretty good, but we'll have to see. ›››

Discovering Unexpected Joys in 'Roads, Trees and Honey Bees' Trailer
"I never really expected my life to turn out like this." Freestyle Digital Media has debuted the trailer for an indie dramedy titled Roads, Trees and Honey Bees, the feature directorial debut of young filmmaker Stephanie McBain. The film is about a trio of people on the move. Steve quits his job, gets divorced from his wife, and finds himself on a cross country journey with Connor Martin, a young, aspiring musician and his sister Sarah Martin, a college graduate who is looking for her next step. Together they embark on a journey to discover the pursuit of happiness and find their purpose in life - by driving to California. Starring Nick Nicotera, Donald Clark Jr., Nikki Leigh, Chris Mulkey, Jon Root, and Angela de Silva. This looks particularly unimpressive and forgettable, which explains why it hasn't played at any festivals or elsewhere. ›››

Second Trailer for Emma Thompson & Mindy Kaling's Film 'Late Night'
"What exactly is wrong with my bits?" "They're a little old, and a little white." Amazon Studios has debuted a second official trailer for the indie comedy Late Night, which premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (here's my review). The first trailer launched a few months ago, and this new one comes with a poster. Written by, and starring, comedian Mindy Kaling, the film is about a female late night talk show host who realizes she's out of touch and out of date, so she hires a woman on her writing staff. But it doesn't go as planned, and then she discovers that she is as resistant to women as all the men. Emma Thompson also stars as Katherine, with a cast including John Lithgow, Ike Barinholtz, Hugh Dancy, Max Casella, Paul Walter Hauser, Denis O'Hare, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan. Have a look. ›››

Official Trailer for Restored Re-Release of James Ivory's 'Quartet' Film
"You're not going to talk to anybody about this, are you?" Cohen Media Group has debuted a brand new official trailer for their re-release of the classic romantic drama Quartet, set in Paris in the 1920s. This was the 11th feature film directed by James Ivory, adapted from Jean Rhys's 1928 autobiographical novel of the same name. It originally premiered at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival and opened in theaters later that year. The film has been restored and remastered for this re-release, and will play in a few theaters again starting soon. Marya, as played by Isabelle Adjani, finds herself penniless after her art dealer husband, Stephan, is convicted of theft. She accepts the hospitality of a strange couple, H.J. and Lois Heidler, as played by Alan Bates and Maggie Smith, who let her live in their house. The cast also includes Anthony Higgins, Sebastien Floche, and Suzanne Flon. As always, it's great to catch classics back on the big screen again. ›››

New US Trailer for Egyptian Film 'Yomeddine' Directed by A.B. Shawky
"Let's go find our family." Strand Releasing has debuted an official US trailer for the Egyptian indie drama Yomeddine, from Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker A.B. Shawky making his feature directorial debut. This little film premiered in-competition at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and it's a buddy road trip comedy from Egypt about a couple of misfits who venture out into the world hoping to find a bit of hospitality and maybe a family. Rady Gamal stars as Beshay, a man cured of leprosy who has never left the leper colony in the Egyptian desert where he has lived since childhood. The small cast includes Ahmed Abdelhafiz, Osama Abdallah, Mohamed Abdel Azim, and Shahira Fahmy. This soulful story is full of heart and joy, despite their circumstances, and it is indeed a "life-affirming" and "cheerful" film worthy of discovering. ›››

Meet a Passionate Animal Lover in 'For the Birds' Documentary Trailer
"I would die for them." Dogwoof has debuted an official trailer for the documentary For the Birds, which played at AFI Docs + the Sheffield Documentary Festival last year. The film is about a woman named Kathy, whose love for birds has changed her life – she lives with 200 pet chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys. The film begins by profiling her battle with local animal rescuers, but then shifts into focusing on her marriage to her husband Gary - and how her love for these birds has taken a toll on her marriage and her well-being. I'm a big, big fan of documentaries about animals and people who love them and care for them (also see: Buddy or The Biggest Little Farm), and this is right up my alley. Though I'm super nervous to see how this obsession has affected her so deeply, it looks a bit upsetting but still utterly compelling. Check it out below. ›››

Watch: Clever Dark Comedy Short 'Wyrm' Needs You to Kiss Someone
"I like your black eye." A must watch short film - one of the best of the year so far. Wyrm is a short written and directed by Christopher Winterbauer, that originally premiered in 2017 and is now available online after playing on the festival circuit for a while. The nerdy-retro short is about a kid in school who must kiss someone in order to have his My.E.Q. Remote Monitoring collar removed. It's making fun of the feeling that you have to achieve some kind of romantic contact in order to progress in life. And while Winterbauer says Lanthimos's The Lobster was an inspiration, he did originally come up with the idea for this when he was 15 and afraid he was behind everyone else kissing a girl. Starring Reid Miller as Wyrm, with Azure Brandi, Skye Popov, Aidan Dorn Wallenstein, Davey Johnson. (And the voice of Bob Odenkirk.) There's some remarkably clever humor in this, plus the production design & everything else about it is outstanding. ›››

First Trailer for Biopic Documentary 'Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am'
"Ultimately, I knew that words have power." Magnolia Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie documentary titled Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, an invigorating, inspiring biographic profile of the legendary African-American novelist, essayist, editor, and professor. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and played at other festivals including at the Miami, Cleveland, Wisconsin, and Montclair Film Festivals this year. This documentary is described as an "artful and intimate meditation on the legendary storyteller" Toni Morrison that "examines her life, her works and the powerful themes she has confronted throughout her literary career." From this trailer the doc looks fantastic, with some powerful and fierce moments from Toni and from others who knew her and have been influenced by her. As Oprah says in here: "Morrison's work shows us through pain all the myriad ways we can come to love." See below. ›››
