Christmas Miracle (JS)
Request: could you do a joe sugg imagine where the reader and him are best friends and she can’t be with her family for Christmas so joe invites her to spend christmas with him and his family, and his family all comment on how they should get together !
💙
—————————————-
“I really don’t want to intrude,” I tell Joe over the phone while I sit in traffic. It seemed most people were moving around the city for the holidays to go home to their families. Lucky for me, my flight was cancelled which meant I was spending Christmas alone. But my best friend, Joe, called me insisting I go back home with him.
“I’m telling you Y/N, it’s not a big deal! My family has known you ever since we all lived together. You’re like family!” His words make their way through my negativity and I smile for the first time that day. But still, Christmas was a private holiday for the Suggs. “Your family is probably not even expecting-”
“You are not sitting alone in your apartment on Christmas Y/N!” Joe cuts me off. The traffic finally lets up and my Uber driver moves. “You don’t even have a bloody tree and Zoe would have my head if that’s how you’re spending the holidays.” And he was right, I didn’t put up many decorations since I planned on going home anyway.
“Fine,” I decided it was pointless to argue. He always won anyway.
“I’ll wait at your place.”
“I’ll head straight to your car, I’m packed anyway.” I say, slightly bitter. I was really looking forward to an Aussie Christmas.
“Hey, we’ll make the most of it.” Joe knew my bummed-out tone.
I end the call and watch the rain sprinkle over dreary London. I’m pretty sure I could have walked faster than the car with the heavy traffic. I pull up a game on my phone and distract myself until we arrive to my apartment.
Joe greets me in his car and we sit in comfortable silence as he gets out of London. “You’ll be alright, love.” Joe squeezes my shoulder when I don’t make conversation.
“I know,” I sigh. “I was just looking forward to seeing my family. But honestly Joe thank you.”
“It’s nothing,” he smiles. When he turns his focus back to the road I admire his profile. For as long as I could remember, I was in love with Joe. But we lived with each other when I first moved to London and started my Youtube channel. Even though I had a feeling he might like me back, but he never took that first step. Zoe told me if I waited I would be eighty by the time he came around but I held out, hoping he would make the first move.
To brighten up the mood Joe turns on his Christmas playlist and soon we’re singing holiday classics and laughing so hard it was probably a driving hazard.
We finally reach Joe’s home as the first snowflakes fall from the sky. I tilt my head back and stick out my tongue to catch some flakes. When I glance at Joe he’s smiling at me. I blush but the frigid air already painted my cheeks pink as soon as I stepped out of the car. Joe stretches his hand out to me and I grab it and even though we wear mittens, my stomach turns.
I’m greeted like a long lost relative at the Sugg house. Zoe and Alfie join us by the evening and we sit around a fire as Zoe handles the playlist.
“Do you need anything else?” Joe’s dad asks, offering me tea which I wrap my hands around gratefully. I sit, cuddled into Joe’s side in front of the fire. He’s playing with my hair which, paired with the heat, makes me sleepy.
“So when did you two finally start dating?” Joe’s grandpa asks.
“Oh no, we’re not-” my eyes widen as I sit up.
“Gramps,” Joe gives me an apologetic look. I see Zoe pressing her hand to her mouth stifling her giggle. Her dad laughs loudly at our discomfort.
“I thought you were bringing her home as your girl too,” Joe’s dad comments.
“Joe didn’t you tell them my flight was cancelled?” I turn to Joe.
“I did!” He says.
“There’s only one room for the two of you, I thought you were together and Sugg hotel is all booked up,” his dad chuckles as he goes back for drinks.
“Oh my,” Zoe giggles and I cut her a look which makes her laugh more. She knew how we felt about each other.
“You two are literally made for each other,” Alfie says as he sips his drink. “You two act like you’re 8.”
“We do not!” I say defensively. I could goof off sometimes but I was a responsible adult too!
Alfie shrugs but Zoe agrees with him. Joe rolls his eyes but when his dad returns with cider, the topic shifts and Joe pulls me back to him on the couch. But now, it’s slightly uncomfortable. I’m hyperaware of how our legs tangle in each other and I hear his heart racing as my head leans back into his chest.
“Guys, I’m literally falling asleep here. I’m ready for bed,” Zoe says.
“I’m not,” Alfie plucks a cup and sits it next to his empty tea cup. Zoe convinces Alfie to take his drink up to the room as she says goodnight. I laugh, she was already 50.
“You two remind me of me and my wife when I was younger.” Joe’s grandpa leans into us. “I can see the chemistry.”
“Ughh,” Joe untangles himself from me and gets up gently. “Y/N we should get to bed before these two marry us right here in the living room.”
I blush as I pick up my mug and get up.
“Watch what you say, I’m licensed!” Joe’s grandpa says. My blush deepens as everyone else in the room laughs. Joe grabs my hand and we make our way to the shared bedroom.
“I can sleep on the couch if you want,” Joe tells me when we reach our space.
“We’ve slept on the same bed before.”
“Like when we watched Paranormal Activity and you didn’t want to sleep alone?” Joe teases.
“Hush,” I slap his arm playfully. “As long as you wear pants I’m alright sleeping in the same bed.”
I don’t realise that’s what Joe’s holding as he laughs and throws his pants and a t-shirt at my head. I squeal and kick them back to him but that just makes him double over onto the bed with crying-laughing. I tip him off the bed and he sprawls onto the floor which makes me laugh and soon we’re both on the ground, trying to catch our breath. We eventually take turns changing and climb into bed.
I convince in my head how not awkward this was now that the entire house expressed what we both knew deep down. That we both belonged with each other. But we’ve slept together before, I remind myself, Joe’s just a friend.
“Hey,” Joe breaks the silence.
“Yeah?” I respond.
“Have you-did you ever think? Have you ever thought if we…” Joe tries to get his wording right. The mattress moves as he turns to face me, so I do the same. The dim lighting accentuates his jawline and his hair flops into his eyes. “What we would be like together?”
I can’t help but reach out and brush the hair out of his face. I freeze as I realise what I’m doing but Joe takes the opportunity to grab my arm and pull me closer to him.
“We would be good together don’t you think?” He inquires.
“Maybe, you’d do my head in if I had to live with you again though.” I joke.
“Hey, it was Caspar leaving the mess!”
“True,” I whisper. “We’d never decide on where we want to eat.” I say referencing to our very different palattes.
“We could find a compromise.” Joe responds as he wraps his arm around me and closes the space between us.
“If it didn’t work out-”
“It would,” Joe stops me from voicing my biggest fear.
“So what are you waiting for?” I ask Joe genuinely.
“I don’t wanna hurt you.” Joe confesses.
“Then don’t,” I touch my forehead to his and we gaze into each other’s eyes for what feels like eternity. Joe cups my face and slowly, and very gently, he places a kiss on me. I run my fingers through his hair and it slips through my fingers like silk as I deepen the kiss.
“Why did I wait so long to do that?” Joe says against my lips. I smile and capture his lips with mine, wondering the same thing. Joe slips me underneath as he lifts himself and we shed our clothing, piece by piece. I blush, thinking what his family would think if they knew what all their comments led to.
•••
“Merry Christmas,” Joe whispers to me later that night.
“I think I just experienced my first Christmas miracle,” I tease.
He muffles his laugh against me hair as he kisses my temple. I turn in his embrace and he wraps his arms around me and pulls me tighter to him. Maybe it was just fate I missed my flight this morning. I fall asleep with a smile on my face, warm within my love’s arms.

Harmless Kisses (JS)
Request: your best friends and on Holliday with all the boys and there isn’t enough beds and you and joe pull the short straw and have to share beds and you have many drunk night outs and you both really affectionate and kiss a couple times and everyone makes a big fuss about it then one day you attend a wedding and all the older adults think your a couple…
It’s dark by the time I arrive to our rental, I was late because I had a project deadline earlier that morning so I had been working on a grant to finish my thesis-it was a long and tiring process that barely left me time to hang out with my best friends. And today of all days the trains were all late and then it was hell to find a taxi. Figures.
I drag my suitcase into the house we’re staying at and all the boys are standing around the kitchen table.
“Thanks for the help,” I roll my eyes and make my way to them. They were stood around a bowl and Josh was pulling out a paper. I guess I came at the right time.
“I got a 4 what does that mean?” He asks.
“Aww mate you got the room with the terrace.”
“All right!” Josh grins and pushes the bowl to me. “Y/N you go next.”
I pick out a number, hoping it’s a good one. “Two?” I ask.
“2?” Conor looks at the boys. “Maybe she can get a single room.”
“Two has a king bed so we agreed two people would sleep there.” Josh explains to me.
“Guys come on!” I whine but Jack’s already picked a really good room and he’s not giving it up. “Shouldn’t the brothers share the room?” I try again but Jack is completely against it.
“You lot are the worst.” I say as I go to sit on the sofa. At this point it was between Joe, Conor, or Caspar and I didn’t want to stand around and wait. And as my luck should have it, Joe pulls out the number 2.
“Alright guess it’s me and you yeah?” Joe wiggles his brows at me and I roll my eyes.
“At least it’s not Conor,” I say. “Our room would be a proper mess if it was me and him.”
“You leave your bloody makeup everywhere you’re not that tidy either,” Conor argues back.
“I don’t mind Y/N,” Joe puts his arm around me and kisses my forehead. “How about we get these to our room?” Joe asks as he tries to carry both our suitcases but I grab mine from him. This would be interesting. I had a major thing for Joe for as long as I could remember and we had felt the tension between us even more in the last few months. It would either lead to us hooking up this weekend or this would be the worst weekend ever.
We unpack our suitcases and talk casually about the trip. What we would do tomorrow, which pubs we were hitting up during the trip, which one of our friends would argue first. Very friendly conversation. That night, however, things change.
“Is this alright?” Joe asks from his side of the bed.
“Joe? Is that you? This bed is so bloody huge I can’t even see you.” I joke.
“Looking for me?” His face is suddenly right next to mine and the warmth heats up my own skin. Although I suspect that wasn’t the only reason I was so hot.
“There you are,” I boop his nose and he laughs. I watch his face transform and I want him so badly but I restrain myself. “This is better,” I say.
“Yeah we would’ve been alright on a smaller bed too.” Joe says as he casually drapes his arm across my stomach.
Suddenly the door is bust open and we jerk apart as lights blind us and horns blare in our room. I swear as does Joe beside me as we throw the covers up over our heads.
“I swear if I get a migraine I’m going to kick you all right in th-”
“We got you!” The boys are all laughing and making sure their footage is good from the terror they just inflicted.
“Get out!” Joe yells as he gets up off the bed and all the boys scramble but Joe manages to slap Josh’s bum as he’s the last one scrambling out. “Bloody fools.” Joe mutters as he locks the door.
“You are the reason they pull this shite” I say, settling back into bed.
“Ugh,” Joe climbs back in and this time he shows no restraint as he scoops me against him and tucks his face into my neck. I remain stiff as I wait for Joe to let go but his breathing slows so I relax too. I snuggle in with him and fall asleep.
•••
We explore the city and its pubs the next day, eating the local cuisine but I’m checking my phone constantly, expecting a call from my university. I had applied for a grant and my financial situation depended on it.
“You’re on bloody vacation stop ruining it by being all stressed out,” Joe takes my phone from me and puts it in his pocket. I have no shame in trying to reach in and grab it back but Joe swats my hand away, turning red as he pushes his chair back. “Easy tiger.”
That makes me blush, realising how close I was to accidently brushing something else. “You’re giving that back to me,” I try to play it off.
“I’ll give it to you before bed,” Joe says and it’s final as he turns away from me. Ugh.
Joe gives it to me earlier instead while we all hang out near the pool as the sun goes down. I open up my email first thing and scan the words “Congratulation Ms.Y/L/N we are pleased to grant you…”
“I got it!” I holler. All that hard work and extra essays I had to write. “Joe!” I yell to him where he’s inside mixing drinks. The boys are slightly confused but they shout encouragement anyway. Joe comes out and I run to him yelling. He puts down his drinks as I crash into him and he twirls me around.
“I knew you could do it!” He shouts and in the moment I don’t even realise but I slide back down so my feet touch the floor and I kiss Joe in the excitement. And he kisses me back.
It’s the silence in the back that clues me in. I tear myself away from Joe and he looks at me, slightly dazed. I turn back to the boys who have a similar expression on minus the lipstick smudges.
“I got my grant!” I try to play if off but the boys aren’t having it.
“You two just kissed,” Conor points to both of us.
“On the lips,” Caspar says.
I pout my lips and walk towards them, “Anyone else want one too?”
Caspar pretends to fumble out of the seat and everyone laughs.
“Okay but what the hell just happened?” Jack asks.
“We were celebrating,” Joe finally says. He shrugs and walks down to me where he puts his hand on my waist. “Just a harmless kiss.”
“Yeah,” I smile. I was glad Joe wasn’t making it a big deal. Or…did I want him to? But we continue the night like nothing’s happened. And when we go to bed we cuddle like we did and it’s awkward at first but then it isn’t.
The next night, Conor takes us all to a very hush nye party with his musician connections. And a hush party obviously meant it was very loud and stuffed with people. I keep a drink in my hand for most of the night, catching the boys every so often and dancing with a few of them. As the clock begins to tick closer to midnight I get more and more drunk, realising I had nobody for new year’s. I was in a house full of people but nobody was mine.
I grab another drink and stand near the door of where the projector counts down to midnight. There was 1 minute left. I take a long sip of my drink and watch the numbers get smaller.
“16, 15, 14…” Through the voices I recognise Joe’s nearby and spot him. His eyes are alight with enthusiasm and he has on a permanent half-smile which meant he was as smashed as I was. I squeeze past people and try to call out but the sounds are too loud.
I manage to grab his hand as the clock strikes midnight and without looking, he pulls me towards him and closes his mouth around mine. And we’re kissing. Again.
When he pulls away, he seems confused to see me in his arms. “Y/N?”
“Happy New Year,” I shrug but he laughs even though nothing is funny and kisses me again but with more purpose. His lips are soft against my own and I curl my hand around his neck to pull him closer. He grips my waist and I feel more than hear the groan he lets out. That’s when I let go.
“Wow,” I heave and Joe’s breathing is also coming out heavy. He gives me a drunken smile and tries to wipe the corner of my mouth but manages to smudge my lipstick on my cheeks even more. I shake my head and excuse myself to the bathroom. That was quite a kiss.
The third time Joe there really is no going back. We get very drunk a few nights later and by the time we’ve changed into our pyjamas and crawled into bed we’ve abandoned anything within us that’s held us back in the past. “I want to kiss you,” Joe slurs. “Like the other day I’m gonna kiss you.”
I giggle and watch Joe get closer and then miss my mouth by inches. We both burst out laughing which earns a knocking from the other side of the wall. Jack’s bedroom.
“Shh,” I tell him. He smiles, eyes half shut as he tries again. And this time he hits bullseye.
The kiss tastes like alcohol and mint. It’s hot and messy and everything I wanted it to be. His lips eventually leave mine to explore further. He takes his time and I’m impatient in my drunken reverie so I slide down to meet his lips again and tug at his hair as we roll around on the huge bed together.
The next morning, Joe gives me a sleepy kiss and we leave it at that. And that’s how it remains for the next two weeks while we’re on holiday. The boys catch us kissing a couple times, mostly when we’re drunk and they tease us at first but drop it after they notice how casual we were about it. And every night we push the limit a little bit more, affection turning into slow passion, but we never make it too serious-always playful. And I was okay with that.
“I think I’ll miss sleeping with you in that massive bed.” It’s our last morning at our rental and Joe’s head rests in my lap while I play with his hair. The boys were either in the pool or eating breakfast.
“So are you two dating now?” Josh asks once he sits on the lounge chair beside me.
Joe’s head leaves my lap and he turns to face Joe, “Hey Josh how about you mind your own business?”
“Joe,” I scold him. But Josh leaves anyway and I feel awkward again. After a moment I look at Joe but his sunglasses cover his face. I lift them, “We’re just friends right?” I ask.
Joe takes my hand and holds it to his heated chest, “Yeah.” He says simply before putting the glasses back on. Of course.
•••
Back from vacation, things get very busy for me especially since my grant came through. I have lots of work to catch up on and research my own. But I leave room for Carey’s wedding-a mutual friend of Joe’s and I who actually introduced us both a long time ago.
“Hey beautiful I’m waiting downstairs so hurry up!” Joe calls me the morning of and I stuff the rest of my bobby pins into my purse. I would put them on in the car.
“How many of those do you have?” Joe asks, wide-eyed, when I start sticking them in on the motorway.
“I have no idea,” I say between two in my teeth. “They’re always coming and going.”
“You look amazing by the way,” Joe places his hand on my knee and I want to tell him how comforting his touch was but I didn’t want to sound too clingy.
“You look very handsome too,” I poke his bow tie. “This look suits you well.”
“Why thank you missus,” Joe grabs my hand and kisses it all while staring at the road. I laugh and pull my hand back into my lap but Joe grabs it again and keeps his hold on it until he needs both hands again. My heart races.
At the reception Joe sits next to me even though his seat was a few tables down. He switches placecards and nobody notices. All throughout the night we find excuses to be touching one another-his hand on my thigh, my hand on his arm, his hand on my waist, my hand smoothing down his hair or touching knees while we sit. We can’t get enough.
“I remember when I was like you two,” an elder woman sat at our table makes small talk while we have dinner. “Young love.” She sighs and looks to her friend beside her.
“You two are a very lovely couple,” her friend agrees. “I would put my bets on you twos for a wedding soon. Maybe summer next year yeah?”
Joe and I stutter to respond but after glancing at one another we realise it was futile to explain what we were. We accept the compliment instead.
“We should grab a dance later,” Joe whispers to me while the host introduces the couple to the dancefloor.
“I’ve seen your moves on the dancefloor but can you slow dance?” I ask.
“You’ll find out,” Joe kisses me on the forehead and we turn our gaze back to the couple. Soon after the DJ announces that other couples could join.
“You two better claim a spot. Have some practice before your wedding day.” the women from our table giggle. We rush away as fast as we can.
“Joe,” a man calls out as we make our way to the front.
“Ted!” Joe shakes the man’s hand before he’s pulled into a guy-hug. “It’s nice to see you again.”
I hover behind the two but Ted puts his arm out to me. I lean in for a hug and he kisses the air beside my cheek.
“Joe it’s good to see you with a girl finally. I was just talking to my wife how you boys never settle down.” The man is smiling at me very intensely. Joe laughs and puts his arm around me.
“Yeah, we’re just headed to dance but we’ll catch up later yeah?”
“Yeah of course go dance while you’re young,” Ted shoos us away.
“Sorry about that,” Joe whispers to me once we’re in position on the floor.
“It’s quite funny,” I say truthfully.
“It doesn’t bother you?” Joe asks.
“Why should it?”
“Well…we’re not an item.” Joe watches me for my reaction but I remain casual.
“That’s alright with me. I don’t mind casual.”
“Cool,” Joe slips his hand slightly lower whilst pulling me in. “Me too.”
I rest my cheek on Joe’s chest and hear his heartbeat steady through his chest. I slide my hand down from his shoulder to rest atop his heart. I wonder what it was really feeling for me.
•••
On our way back home, Joe stays quiet, lost in thought. I let him be as my eyes drift shut from all the dancing and laughing during the night. When we reach my flat Joe parks and shakes me awake. He helps me to my flat, carrying my things for me and leaves me at the door.
“Want to come in?” I ask while yawning.
“Best if I don’t,” Joe scratches his neck and backs away. My face falls, what had happened? Joe turns away so I close the door and toss my heels near the door, taking my frustration out on them. Why did Joe decline?
Suddenly there’s rapid knocking on the door and Joe stands there fumbling with his hair. “Y/N,” he steps in without invite and closes the door behind him. “I lied, I don’t want casual with you. All those people at the wedding…I do want to be that was with you. I want you to be my girlfriend.”
“All you had to do was ask,” I smile with relief as I place my forearms on his shoulders but he wasn’t in the playful mood. Not anymore. Instead, he flips us around so my back is against the door and he presses his lips to mine, biting down with intensity. We kiss and touch and pull at one another as we leave a trail of clothing all down the hall and to my bedroom where the bed is definitely a lot smaller but the feelings are just the same.

Long Time Coming (JS)
A/N: This was requested and I thought I’d be able to write it quickly but I got oddly very busy at school this last week so apologies for that! I hope you like this one-I tried to make it long and come full circle lol!
I can’t, the missus isn’t feeling too well. I groan at Josh’s text in the group chat. He’s the third one to cancel our evening plans after Oli and Byron and since Byron’s girlfriend wasn’t coming, Jack’s girlfriend also wasn’t showing which meant Jack was leaving us to stay home. What a bunch of fun-suckers.
I ring Joe, “It seems like getting into a relationship just makes you more boring.”
“Are we the only two available for tonight then?” Joe sounds distracted as he responds.
“Conor said he might show so that would be a miracle and we all know when Caspar ignores the group we shouldn’t expect much.”
“We should be proud of being the only singles left in our group because at least we still know how to have some fun,” Joe says.
It did get lonely sometimes, but I don’t mention that. “It is. Hey how about we drink to that tonight. When are you getting here?”
“Soon,” Joe sounds like he’s running and suddenly a knock on my door echoes through the phone. A grin splits my face as I go to open it.

Intimidated (JM)
Request: Can you do a jack Maynard imagine were he meets your parents and your older brother and sister and they get protective over there younger sister and question him and he admits he loves you and you overhear it all
“So?” I ask my boyfriend. We wait on the platform for the train to take us to my parent’s home on the outskirts of the west end, where I grew up. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m alright,” Jack nods but I notice the way he clutches his duffel bag tighter than normal.
I lean my arm on his shoulder and bring my face closer to his. “You sure? My siblings can be a little intimidating. I just want to give you fair warning.”
“I’m sure it’s alright,” Jack bluffs. “We’ve been dating for six months now so-”
“Oh,” I laugh, cutting him off. “My college boyfriend in second year. We dated for a year before he came around and my sister got her claws so deep he literally avoided me for a week before I had to pull it out of him.”
“Wow,” Jack breaths as our train comes into the station and to a stop. The cart is pretty empty and we find a row of seats to ourselves.
“You’re tougher than him though,” I push his shoulder with mine.
“I am?” Jack responds.
“Yeah,” I kiss his cheek and he turns to look at me. We gaze at each other like it was our first date and the anticipated kiss was finally happening; but with Jack, it was like that. Every time I saw him after a day of work, or woke to him on any morning, my breath would catch for a second. I felt like I was falling for him for the first time every damn day.
“Something on my face?” I ask with a teasing smile, not breaking eye contact with Jack.
“Yeah, actually there is.” Jack leans in so our foreheads touch. “Such beauty.”
I throw my head back and laugh, not minding the other strangers on the train. “You’re full of shite!” I exclaim.
Jack chuckles, “It’s one of the many charming qualities you love, isn’t it?”
My laugh dies down as I shake my head. The L-word makes the moment tense and Jack quickly catches on. We hadn’t said it to each other yet, which may have been weird…but I couldn’t tell. I’d had boyfriends who said it two months into dating and others who’d taken a few more. I wasn’t worried because I knew we were very much in love. But not hearing it also made me quite uneasy, especially when Jack used the word so casually as he joked.

Less Complicated (JS)
A/N: After multiple requests of Joe+fwb I decided to write this. I’m taking a much needed break from studying this weekend and this was f u n!
I squint my eyes to read the handwritten menu, this was the only sandwich shop open at 2am so the options were very limited.
“Ready?” The man behind the counter asks.
“In a sec,” I say. He nods and gives me space to decide.
“Hullo gorgeous,” a voice slurs from beside me. “What are you doing ‘round here?” He twirls the strand of my hair, staring in fascination as it curls around his finger.
“I’m trying to get food,” I tell him. I was the designated driver tonight so Joe’s six-drink personality was overly-touchy. Not that I minded. I had just dropped Conor and Caspar off at their flat but Joe had begged me to grab a bite.
“Is he bothering you?” The man behind the counter reappears suddenly, giving Joe the stink eye.
“Oh no,” I laugh. “He’s with me. I’m here because he’s too drunk to order himself.”
Joe gives the man a dopey smile but it’s returned with a glare.
“Thanks love,” Joe says. His entire body is draped across the countertop, his chin propped on his hand, watching me as I order what I think he’d want.
“You should sit before you hurt yourself,” I tell him as he stumbles and almost knocks down the napkin dispenser.
“I want to stay here with you,” he slurs. He gets himself up and wraps his arm around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. “I like you a lot.”
“If we got one drink less, you’d be telling me how hot I was,” I tease him.
“I didn’t say you weren’t hot,” Joe’s eyes glisten with mischief. “You’re so hot-”
Our sandwiches thankfully cut Joe short and I put his in his hands as we find a small table near the window, our knees knocking underneath.
“This is the best sandwich I’ve ever had,” Joe takes a big bite of his. I laugh and hand him a napkin to wipe his chin. He smiles sweetly as he wipes his face before continuing but my breath catches in my throat the way it does sometimes when I looked at Joe. A strange ache at how wonderful he was and yet only a friend-a friend I slept with from time to time. It wasn’t a regular thing but every so often when the two of us were single we somehow ended up in each other’s beds. We didn’t discuss it much outside of the morning after and I never demanded anything more. We were close friends who were always touchy, so nobody noticed the difference.
Sometimes, I thought to myself, how nice it would be to have a boyfriend like Joe. But his fear of commitment kept me at bay too. I didn’t want to be with somebody who had issues that were too similar to my own.
“What?” Joe asks when he catches me looking. “Is yours not good?”
I glance at my food-I hadn’t really touched it yet.
“It’s perfect,” I smile. That satisfies Joe as he goes back to finishing his and I start on my own.
On the drive to his flat, Joe continues to go on and on about the randomest things: how much he loved London and hated pineapples and how glad he was I was driving him home.
“It’s a cozy car-like a house,” Joe says of my car, reaching to touch the charm I hung from the mirror.
“Except I don’t live in here,” I keep up with his drunken chatter.
“Yeah but home-” he says.
“I don’t know what your home feels like but babe,” I turn to him. “Maybe you need to rethink it.”
Joe shakes his head seriously. “No. You can make anywhere feel like home.”
“Oh,” I suddenly have nothing clever to say to that so I keep my eyes on the road instead. Joe wasn’t allowed to say things that tugged at my heart like that. It was unfair.
“Did you know that?” Joe continues.
“That’s probably the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to try to get into my pants,” I try to make light of his words.
“I’m sweet,” Joe defends himself. “I’m always sweet whether I want to sleep with you or not.”
“Soo am I ending up at your flat tonight?” I ask, teasing him.
“You can live at my flat,” Joe slurs. “That’s how sweet I am.”
“Alright,” I laugh as I squeeze my car into a spot near his flat. “Let’s get you out.”
Joe manages to open the door but when I get to his side I see he’s forgetten to unbuckle his seatbelt yet continues to struggle to get out.
“Babe,” I laugh as I duck into the car to unbuckle his seat. Joe’s hand goes to my arm as I lean across him and stays there as I shuffle to get out of the car.
“Let’s go,” I urge. “I need your toilet.”
“Let’s go,” Joe repeats but he’s slower to act, his eyes lingering on me instead.
“What?” I ask in the lift. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
The doors open at that moment so we step off. Joe follows and fumbles with unlocking the door. Once inside, I head to the bathroom.
“Are you staying?” Joe asks when I come out. He’s changed quickly, wearing an old shirt and sweatpants with a mug in his hand.
“Do you want me to stay?” I ask hesitantly. I didn’t exactly want to sleep with a drunk Joe but not being alone sounded promising.
“I wouldn’t mind,” Joe steps forward and curls his hands around my back. I look up at his hair flopping into his eyes which are alight with passion.
“You’re pretty drunk,” I tell him as he traces shapes on my back. I press closer to him.
“I think we’ve fooled around when I was more drunk,” Joe mumbles. “I only had four drinks or something.”
I sigh, Joe was hard to resist. His hand travels to my lower back and splays onto the fabric of my shirt. I can almost feel the electricity coursing through him and I wanted him too…but he was drunk.
I comb the flop of hair back, not meeting his eye. My fingers dance along the side of his face and down his jaw, tracing his lips with my thumb. His eyes flutter, the fabric of my shirt tightening as he grips it in a fist.
“Y/N,” he sighs against my skin. “Don’t tease me.”
He pushes me against the wall and begins leaving kisses along the crook of my neck, his hand sliding under my top and pulling it over my head.
“Are you sure-” I try to say but Joe answers by pressing his mouth to mine and biting down on my lips-a little too hard.
“Joe,” I push him away.
“Sorry,” his eyes widen as he realises what he’d done.
I laugh, “You’re getting ahead of yourself.”
Joe actually blushes and rubs the back of his neck, still staring at my lips. This just makes him a thousand times more attractive so I grab his shoulders and bring my lips crashing into his. I wrap my leg around Joe and he lifts my other leg as I stradle him against the wall.
He manages to carry us to his spare room where we desparately tear at each other’s clothes and do what we knew best.
It had been a while; I was dating somebody else for a few months and it was a couple weeks since I’d broken up with him. For Joe, it was a long time since he’d slept with me and I could tell he missed it with how quick he went from kissing me in the hallway to undressing me in bed. I enjoy the familiar that Joe brings though, even for the night.
“Y/N,” he mumbles sleepily once the two of us have settled into the sheets, his arm thrown across my midsection and my back against his chest.
I wasn’t as sleepy as Joe but being in bed with him made it easier to sleep. I didn’t always stay the night but with Joe being so drunk and touchy I didn’t mind the extra attention. It had been a rough few weeks after my break-up and Joe’s arms around me made me feel less alone. I stroke his arm and hold his hand to my face.
“Y/N,” he mumbles into my hair again. He was so sleepy yet he was still trying to stay awake.
I wait for him to continue but his breathing evens out. I assume he’d fallen asleep when the words escape him.
“I love you,” he breaths. My own breath stops as I question whether I just heard him confess that.
But he mumbles it again, “I love you so much.” He yawns. “Your old boyfriend was a dick.”
I turn in bed to face him, my limbs feeling stiff as I try to process his words. But Joe is fast asleep in the few seconds it took to turn and now I’m unsure whether he really said it. In the darkened room under warm sheets it feels like a hallucination. But he did say it. Did he mean it?
I think about Joe, as my friend, and I’m suddenly scared where things could go if I acknowledge his drunk confession.
My heart flutters in my throat as I gently remove his arm from my waist and slip out to pull on my shorts. I get dressed in the minimal light and pad to the door. Joe looks perfect in the rumpled sheets we’d previously occupied but maybe it was best if I went home tonight and woke up in my own bed in the morning. Just like all the other times, I’d rather we didn’t talk about what happened the night before and continue on as just friends. It’d be a lot less complicated that way.

Byron: You’re shirtless?
Jack: Yes.
Byron: And also covered in...oil?
Jack: Well, you know how you always say I never glisten?
Byron: Listen! You never listen!
Jack: Ohh.
