I have no plans for a trip down memory lane. Don't be like that. You know it's hard to find a bosom friend in this line of work. You're a kindred spirit of sorts.
Unknown Episode 11
The dialogue in the last two gifs could also be taken to mean:
If everything goes well/is alright, let me know. Then I won't/shouldn't let you know if something happens/goes wrong.

Unknown, Ep 11: To Grow Taller
Alright yā€™all, I just want to say that I am not super thrilled with how Episode 11 went. I felt like they completely obliterated the emotional build up to the change over after they did such a great job of navigating it in Episode 10.Ā
So as much as there were some lovely images of hands, Iā€™m not that interested in writing about it. So it is time, it is time to do the thing I should have done long ago.Ā
It is time to write about Lili and San Pang.Ā
Hands down my favorite part of this episode (and probably one of my favorite scenes of the series) was seeing the two of them interact, of seeing more of Liliā€™s inner workings, of understanding that she knows more than she lets on. I loved Yuan telling Qian that Lili is smart, and I loved the proud little smile Qian had when he heard that.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most important scene in this episode, to me, starts with the height wall. That thing has been causing me psychic damage since episode one. It pans down to Lili. I like how long the camera lingers on her eyes. Lili has seen everything that has happened in their lives and sheā€™s been spared from a lot of the violence, but that doesnā€™t mean she hasnā€™t beared witness to it.Ā
I was really struck by her words to San Pang:Ā
ā€œWhen we were little, Qian was always there to help us with everything we did. He would measure our height every year. I always wondered when I could grow taller than him. Then I could protect him.ā€Ā
Tumblr media
I know we have seen Lili constantly take a back seat in this story. We have seen her even acknowledge Qianā€™s focus on Yuan multiple times throughout the show. We donā€™t see her doing as much for Qian as Yuan does. She doesnā€™t know how to wrap up leftovers, sheā€™s not a great cook, she doesnā€™t try to pay the household bills. But thatā€™s because she loves Qian like a sister does, sheā€™s got a secure position in the household, sheā€™s not trying to be Qianā€™s partner, and it is a testament to Qianā€™s love for Lili that she does not know how to do some of the basic life things, because it means that sheā€™s been so well taken care of she hasnā€™t been forced to learn.
There are all these little elements scattered across the series that show Qianā€™s love for Lili. The picture on his desk at home is of him, Yuan, and Lili at Qianā€™s graduation. He has the magazine sheā€™s featured in on display. He immediately softens on his anger towards her relationship with San Pang when she asks him to go on a family vacation.Ā
She has seen how much Qian has suffered, and she loves Qian enough to want to shield him from any more harm.Ā
Tumblr media
And San Pang is so lovely in this scene, with his head resting on the stair railing, a sleepy look of love on his face as he stares at Lili. I love the way San Pang smiles to himself when she tells him this. Because Qian is family to San Pang and San Pang is family to Qian. San Pang loves Qian and wants what is best for him always. And I do think there is a difference there between the soft, dreamy, comfortable expression he has when looking at the woman he loves, and the small smile that lights up his eyes at the thought of Lili loving her brother enough to want to protect him.
Tumblr media
Liliā€™s face is serious, and she does not always look in San Pangā€™s direction when she talks:Ā Ā
ā€œEven though he is a few years older than us, his hands are always covered in scars and calluses.ā€ Lili tells the ground. Itā€™s interesting to me to see when she is comfortable enough reviving a memory to look San Pang in the eyes because she doesnā€™t do so until partway through her hand cream story:
ā€œOne year, I took the hand cream my classmates gave meā€ she looks at San Pang ā€œand rubbed it on his hands at midnight.ā€
Tumblr media
The camera cuts to San Pang who is listening to Lili absolutely enraptured by her. And I do have to commend the show for how they have navigated Lili and San Pangā€™s relationship change. In very few frames, with little fanfare or flare they have made San Pang and Liliā€™s relationship clear, understandable, and believable. Weā€™ve had like, two minutes of them together up through now, and all I need to believe these two will be together forever is all in the way that San Pang looks at Lili. That man is not only head over heels in love with Xiao Bao, heā€™s ass over tea kettle in love with her as well.Ā
Tumblr media
ā€œHe scolded me for it. Do you know why?ā€
ā€œI do.ā€ San Pang says with a smile. And I love that because we remember that San Pang and Qian have grown up together. San Pang has been helping take care of Qian and the rest of the family for years. You know in the way that San Pang smiles that he is remembering Qian as a young man complaining about Lili lotioning his hands in the middle of the night. Hell, I can picture Qianā€™s rant right now. ā€œBecause it smelled like roses.ā€
Tumblr media
Lili laughs and covers her face in embarrassment. ā€œThatā€™s right.ā€Ā Ā
But like a lot of scenes in this show, the transition from lighthearted to more serious changes on a dime. Liliā€™s face slips back in to a frown as she turns over a thought. ā€œNobody cares about Qian.ā€
Tumblr media
And this is what it feels like sometimes, with how stubborn Qian is, with how much weight he wants to carry for himself, with how much debt he owes to the likes of Le, Xiong, and San Pang. But they donā€™t expect repayment, they did this because they care about Qian. San Pang has helped Qian weather many many storms. He has pushed when Qian needed pushing, he has pulled when Qian needed to be held back.Ā
ā€œYes, they do. We all love your brother.ā€Ā
Tumblr media
Qian has so much love in his life, if only he stopped long enough to see it. If only he let go long enough to feel it. I was not thrilled with how they fumbled so much of the emotional weight of Qian and Yuan getting together in this episode, but I am glad the show took time to highlight how much they all love Qian and to show the audience that they want to protect Qian just as much as Qian wants to protect the rest of them.Ā
All this to say San Pang and Lili work incredibly well together as a couple, and Iā€™m so happy that we got to have this little moment between them, both to breathe a bit more life in to their relationship and to remind us all that Yuan is right. Lili is not as naive as she seems.

Unknown Episode 11
Tumblr media
Well, let me get this out of the way upfront. This episode brought us to the big moment we've all been waiting for, the final turn in Yuan and Qian's relationship--and unfortunately, it didn't quite land.
I've been sitting with this episode, contemplating my disappointment with the first sequence, and I think it comes down to this show that has been so assured and confident through most of its run faltering at the crucial moment and seeming to lose faith in its own storytelling to the point that it used editing tricks to compensate. The choice to chop up and sequence this narrative lynchpin of a scene out of order is baffling, and it's a choice that significantly stepped on the most important emotional climax of the story. I was confused to go from the conversation outside to a sudden kiss, then disappointed when we cut back to a very short exchange between Qian and Yuan that was supposed to provide the basis for this turn with only some thin dialogue that didn't connect the beats of the scene, and then into an intense sexual encounter (that was constantly interrupted by repetitive flashbacks) that should have felt like a triumphant and revelatory moment but didn't because of the way we got there.
Tumblr media
I know I'm not the only one feeling that way, since folks have been creating and distributing reedited versions of the scene, and Youku actually uploaded a new version free on YouTube with all the flashbacks removed (a clear move toward fan appeasement after the show received a lot of negative feedback on the scene). The editing and the flashbacks were annoying, but honestly the fundamental problem was the scene they wrote did not sufficiently sell the change for Qian--he goes from saying he is still not certain what he wants to being ready to be dicked down in a couple minutes' time, with nothing in the exchange providing any new information or impetus for the shift. The performers did great work but unfortunately the writing and directing and editing decisions around this sequence were just bad; it's frustrating for this to happen with arguably the most important scene of the romance.
A note about the novel: the way this final turn happened there was quite different and, candidly, better in just about every way, from the impetus for the change to the beats of the revelation to the progression of physical intimacy on a pace that felt much more attuned to the emotional complexities at play. I do not know why the show did...this when they had better source material content to work with, but here we are. I absolutely recommend that anyone who loves this show read it!
Tumblr media
So, with that disappointment expressed, on to the rest of the episode, in which Yuan and Qian settled into their couple era. I was deeply amused by Qian taking to their sex life like a moth to a flame to the point of daydreaming in meetings, but I do wish the episode had focused more on the natural tension and role confusion that should have resulted from this huge shift in their relationship. They touched on that a bit in the scene where Yuan asked Qian if his hug was from his brother or his boyfriend, but they didn't delve into those complexities in the way I hoped they would. I enjoyed their date at the local restaurant (and loved their friendly neighborhood gangster helping to set the mood) and how much it felt like they were surrounded by their history as they moved through all of these familiar locations where they've had important moments. I didn't much care for the insertion of the health scare plot or the time spent on Le and the doc, though I'm always happy for more Sam Lin even if it comes in the form of a weird late stage and wholly unnecessary ship.
Tumblr media
My favorite scene between Yuan and Qian in this episode was far and away the discussion on the stairs with Qian reflecting on his fears of becoming more like his mother and Yuan biting him to snap him out of his fatalistic attitude (this felt like such a classic Priest tribute, she always has biting in her romances). It was a helpful re-centering of what they do for each other and why Yuan is an important presence in Qian's life. I didn't think we needed the health scare for Qian, but I did love Qian choosing to go to this place where he found Yuan to contemplate his life and what matters, with Yuan in turn reflecting that even though he's seen a lot more of the world now, he still prefers to come home to this street. I found that exchange so moving and I think it was important for Qian to hear that.
Tumblr media
And that scene led to my other favorite thing in this episode, which was everything to do with Lili and her bond with her brothers. I teared up to see her standing against the wall where Qian has measured their growth talking about the sneaky ways she would try to care for Qian when they were younger, with San Pang listening attentively and gazing at her adoringly. It was such a small moment, but a really lovely window into their relationship dynamic and the shared history they also have together. And when Yuan and Qian came in hand in hand and she just ran to them and offered up her love and acceptance, I felt so much warmth for this family and everything they've survived together.

this isn't really a note on the translation because the focus is on what isn't said, and i probably should add a disclaimer that this is just my take
Tumblr media
that's a more delicate/family-friendly** way to put it
你都äøēŸ„道ꙚäøŠęˆ‘ꀎéŗ¼ęƒ³ä½
"you don't even know how i think of you at night"
how, not how much. how, as in "what positions i'm putting you in while i'm jerking off" how*
this is one of those instances where the actual translation doesn't matter as much as the implicit meaning. by now we've been given enough clues and context to key in on what Yuan really meant. Yuan has learned from his drunken confession that going too hard (ha) would cause Qian to shut down. he's learned the art of subtlety and how to keep the heat simmering (that whole "coming in directly" double entendre and that offhand bondage comment plus how many times have we seen him feed Qian creamy white substances (i.e. milk and porridge) please the dirty jokes are right there). i do think the expectation is for the audience to easily fill in the blanks (ha), because it should be really clear what Yuan's implying: he's been masturbating while thinking of Qian
*that was my first thought as soon as i heard what Yuan said anyway. decades of media consumption and picking up words and euphemisms and hidden meanings conditioned my brain to automatically make these kinds of connections
**side note: i've never watched anything else on youku and i don't know if their translations need to be clear of any swear words and suggestive language, but there were multiple instances of swearing that didn't get translated (Qian x5, Yuan x1, Ah Hu x1, Le Ge x5 just off the top of my head) plus that cleaned up "coming in" innuendo. i've pointed out the ones that make the most impact in earlier posts

Deep Night - final thoughts
Well, this was a nice surprise. I never know what to expect with a Cheewin show. He's done some things I've loved, but the last two shows he did before this one I did not vibe with at all. He seems to do best with writing that is solid but not overly complex, and I would guess who is on his production team makes a difference as well when it comes to tempering some of his more chaotic impulses. Tanya was an executive producer on this as well as an actress, so if she did play a role in the overall warmth and maturity of this series, I hope she does more work in the QL sphere.
As for why I liked this series so much,
Tumblr media
We get to have:
Aerial performances including a himbo who spins on a pole (sometimes in wings).
Said himbo and a DJ who bathe together regularly but still act shy when admitting their crushes on one another.
Romantic and cute boyfies who are also incredibly horny and have sex in open spaces.
A man so in love with his boyfriend that he learns how to do an aerial performance in one afternoon.
A love triangle that resolves via poly.
Older lesbians who realize they can still be cute little girlfriends.
Couples and throuple working through issues with communication and maturity.
Characters who are capable of self-reflection, admitting wrong, and apologizing.
A theme of non-judgment and support for people regardless of the work that they do, especially if it's work society tends to look down on.
Diversity of gender expression and fabulous outfits.
It wasn't perfect, I wish we had gotten to see more aerials, especially because they had the actors learn the skill for real. The Seiji and Ken performances were weirdly cut, presumably for some bts reason. The aunt was so over the top she didn't really fit the vibe of the show. There was some rushing with the throuple resolution. (Though I won't mind if they were saving some things for a special episode).
This one was easy to miss with the number of releases we're getting right now, but it's worth checking out. It's not high art, but it's one of the sweetest shows I've seen so far this year.

been thinking about the changes in some of the furniture during the 4 years Yuan was gone and how they reflect the changing dynamics of the Wei family
before: round table, single big painting over the long couch, dark red/brown couches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after: rectangular table, 3 plant pictures, lighter color couches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the round table facilitates interaction between all parties, but it may place too much emphasis on the whole family unit at the expense of each individual. the rectangular table seems a more neutral setting for individuals to come together and allows for 1-on-1 direct communication like this:
Tumblr media
the single big painting reinforces the whole family unit, which makes sense when they're all still growing up. maybe the 3 plant paintings symbolize that Qian, Yuan, and Lili have grown up to be individuals and their family dynamics have changed but they're still part of this family unit. they're distinct pieces that make the family whole
and then the couches. so much trauma associated with those couches they really needed to be gone. (and the grey and green make me think of plants growing through cracks in concrete which seem fitting but i know nothing about colors)
Tumblr media
all this to say, a family can change and take in different shapes and forms and split into individual pieces and in the end it's still a family. whatever that looks like is up to us
