recently i’ve been seeing so many posts about corporations capitalizing off of pride and idk how to feel about it. because i feel like the conversation has shifted from “what does it mean that we’re now an exploitable demographic?” to “am i valid if i buy shirts with rainbows on them from corporations during june?” and that’s completely missing the point…just stop for a second and think about why you’re always seeking validity. why you always want someone else (strangers or popular bloggers on the internet) to tell you that you’re doing the right thing. no one is going to scold you for buying a $14.99 rainbow shirt from h&m or target. it’s not “problematic” and you’re not “cancelled.” but just like, think critically about what it means that corporations and businesses are capitalizing off of pride and off of us. pride festivals have become arenas for exchanging business cards and signing you up for mailing lists and they’ll hand you a rainbow sticker. companies harass, villify, and abuse lgbt employees. but they’ll show up with a booth at every festival and come out with a pride collection and then they’re suddenly Progressive, and you have people on the internet saying “at least now we’re seen as a demographic that companies want to pander to! at least they’re trying to exploit us, and that wouldn’t have happened twenty years ago!” just please think critically about all of this. buy whatever you want (as you’re going to do anyway) but just recognize that it’s not a privilege to be just another exploited demographic
